AmEx Platinum Charge Card: 275,000 Membership Rewards Points ($5,000 Spend in 3 Months), $450 Travel Credit, $1,450 Annual Fee

231

Noticed AMEX offering 275,000 bonus membership rewards points without referral. Does this mean there is more points up for grab with a referral? Hope someone can clarify.

It did say offer is "personalised" - unsure if there is a higher value of points up for grabs. I attempted to cycle through a page a few times and got 275k each time.

I saw a video on this one. You literally have to take advantage of most of the offers to negate the $1450 fee and be traveling at least twice a year. A lot of the bonuses like phone screen repair/The Australian and Wall Street Journal digital subscriptions/Wine subscriptions are just fluff.

I don't use a phone case so pretty much claim the phone screen repair each year. Pretty handy tbh.

      • Wait you break your phone once a year?

        • Lifestyle choices it seems. Just because he can 😆

        • some people don't like a layer of plastic for protection, it just doesn't feel the same

        • 364 days from now. "Honey, is it 2nd Apr today?" &*SMASH&^

    • No you don’t. You just get the points and downgrade the card hence avoiding the af.

      • How does that work?

        • -2

My understanding is you call or reach out to their support chat are asking for a refund on the months you have left on the card so you dont pay the full year but its not guaranteed

    • you'd either have to travel a lot/ for work or be able to tax deduct the annual fee using the card for business purposes to make it worthwhile

      • +3

If using the points for charges, 275k points = $1375 pretty much covers the annual fee.

        • ongoing cost to keep the card I mean with the travel creds and included perks, since the points are a sign up bonus only and now you have to cancel it for 18-24m to be able to churn again instead of the 12mth in the "good old days"
the biggest perk is the lounge access/unlimited PP

          • @May4th: doesn't every ozbargainer rotate their cards every year lol? but ye, ongoing cost not really worth it and that was why I just cancelled mine after 12months.

    • How are the bonus’ you listed “just fluff”? I use practically all of the ones you listed, and more, daily

  • this deal makes me sad. 6-7 years ago the perks were much better, the points were worth much more and earn rates much better. all the reward programs have been watered down significantly

    • +1

On a scale of 1 to 10 how sad are you?

      • +2

        20, it's been a rough ride

  • +2

Since Virgin has gone through a process of enshittification with its status, this might be a good option for people who were Virgin Gold but with the changes are unlikely to get it again.

This card is best for people who at least semi recently go travelling as the perks are top notch.

  • On the OZB Referrals, there's two Links for the Platinum Card.

One of them shows 275,000 points, and the other 75,000

Might be the same link, maybe.

But I know which one I'd be clicking on!

  • This site says 1 Amex membership reward points = 1 Qantas point.

    https://www.americanexpress.com/en-gb/rewards/membership-rew…

So would this mean 275,000 Qantas points on offer or am I missing something?

  • +3

I got the card recently. Its pretty good if u can use the benefits.

    $450 travel credit + $200 local dining + $200 overseas dining = $850
Accor plus with free night (used in singapore) = $~400

Priority pass for myself and one additional card holder probably worth at least $100

    • +1

Priority pass is worth way more than $100, especially since you can guest 1 person for free and then the additional card holder can do the same. Effectively you can get 4 people into the lounge at once (if both cardholders are present).

    • did you get your travel credit upon receiving the card or you have to wait the account opening anniversary date which is after a year?

      • After U pay annual fee

        • when do you pay the annual fee? sorry applying the first time :)

          • @maxbet: I can't remember exactly but I think within the first 30 days. I remembered hitting the spend limit within 10 days and got the 275k points already. Was before annual fee if I'm not mistaken. But U won't get your travel credit n major benefits till U pay that big fee

  • +2

    275k points? colour me interested.
$1450 is hefty; but if you have no better use of the points; you can convert 275k MR points into $1375 worth of statement credits negating nearly all of that AF; giving you all its other perks for a measly $75.

Hopefully the offer sticks around for a few weeks. I'd apply for it today, but will be overseas for the next couple weeks and don't really want this card to be sitting in my mailbox.
The perks would've been handy though.

  • +1

It is showing 150000 points to me.

    • Clicking link on my mobile i also get 150k, however on my laptop i get 275k.

Sounds like a previous offer where you might see different offers by cycling the page, try incognito, different devices etc to hopefully see 275k offer

  • Free Amazon Prime is basically cash in hand as well if you are adding up the benefits.

  • I currently have the AMEX Business Platinum, but after comparing the benefits, I feel like I should switch to the personal card instead. I’m wondering would AMEX be concerned if I were to use a personal card for business expenses…

    • No issues as long as you reimburse yourself and pay the card back, also you get to collect all the rewards points for yourself.

  • Only new card members? or would i qualify as an existing card holder of an amex velocity platinum?

    • New card members. I tried last time there was a deal, but as I already held a Platinum Explorer they couldn't offer the bonus points, and seemingly weren't interested in offering any sort of bonus as an existing customer.

    • Negative, I tried last year through a friends referral and didn't get any points, only valid for new card holders (or if you havent held a Amex card for the last 18 months).

But this is a long-existing deal… if you call it a deal

  • +1

Just checked, its the same as the referral bonus, so use the links!

  • use your abn and you only pay

The American Express® Platinum Business Card
Annual Fee: $875 in the first year (normally $1,750 p.a)
    Card Type: Charge Card

  • Are additional AMEX card holders (non-primary) still eligible for the bonus points? Seems to be some comments on previous threads saying this may no longer be the case. Can someone who has recently obtained this card as an additional card holder please share their experiences?
    Thanks

Use a referral In incognito, wife had 150k referral but it gave me 275k anyway with incognito.

    • How did you get this to work? I have the same situation $150k but incognito isn't working, any tips? browser? etc?
      Thanks

    • What I mean is, Were u able to get 275k from your wife's referral link somehow, or just used the 275k without referral?

      • Used her link, can't recall which device I was successful on but try mobile incognito, website etc can also try VPN different cities.

        • Not having any luck, how many goes did it take?

          • @rogsamsy: Not many recently probably no more than 2 times across each of mobile and pc, last year when I was trying to find one for the wife took a while, think I ended up getting it with vpn in Adelaide.

  • What are peoples experience with approval for this card? It seems like its either instant approval or just straight up decline

    • i put in an application last night, didn't get instant approval. Said they'll review and get back to me in 5-10 days.
So not a flat decline, but i'm not too hopeful

      • That’s a decline if I saw one.

        • yup, but at least i don't have to worry about the card sitting in my mail while i'm away

        • Curiosity got the better of me so i called up.

Guy checked and said i'm approved, without asking anything further. So it's possible
Downside is i fly off next week and won't have the card in time; was hoping to use it to get into the centurion lounge. So phooey.

          • @jlien: I received the card in 2 days

            • @aBitTooEasy: I fly off on monday evening though. The amex guy on the phone thinks it won't arrive in time unfortunately.

Askied if i could set up apple pay to start off with that, but nope he said i have to wait for the card

      • Mine went up for review and I called to ask what needed reviewing and had a chat with a nice guy who just requested a couple of extra bits of info and instant approval - done

        • +1

same, called up. Guy processed my application and congratulated me without asking for anything extra.

    • I applied Monday morning, got message to say they were reviewing application, about an hour later was approved and card was delivered by DHL on Wednesday. Super fast and card is metal which is kinda different.

  • Wow so has Amex relaxed their declines?

    • I don’t think so. I tried just before and got declined. I do churn so their system probably still flags that

      • How many cc did you churn before this?

        • I’ve done 3 in the past 6 months

    • Not necessarily.
Admittedly i was disappointed when i didn't get approved instantly since i have excellent financial standing.
Last year i only closed and opened 1 card so wasn't sure on what basis they would've knocked me back, mortgages maybe since i have some hefty loans.

  • +1

Third time's the charm - following two rejections, I've just been approved!

And one lucky OzBargainer has a 60,000 point referral bonus in the mail :)

    • +1

Keep in mind, AMEX regularly offers a 20% bonus on MR > Velocity point transfers. So 275,000 MR points is good for 165,000 Velocity points (so ~$0.83 per Velocity point), which is worth considering over the $1,375 statement credit if you fly regularly.

      • When was your last rejection? I was rejected for a westpac cc two weeks ago.. got a free credit report through equifax afterwards to check my credit score and its 'excellent'. wondering how long i should wait before applying for this amex?

        • Just over 90 days ago, for this card. My credit score is also in the 'excellent' range, and I was previously approved for the Platinum Charge Card on a significantly lower income than what I'm on now (back in 2021).

I think they've been knocking back churners, but might be taking a more relaxed approach now? It can't be easy getting people to sign up for this card in the current economy. I'd take a punt on it, regardless of your recent rejection from Westpac. You can always reapply in 90 days.

  • we are going to spend about $20k on our new house. Is not worth it to get this card for a year with all benefits? We do travel but only 1 domestic, 1 international a year.
