    Lost me at extras.
Ain't nobody got time for that.

    • +27

But extras is what I actually use meanwhile hospital cover is just a backup + tax avoidance scheme.

      • +5

But do you really get your moneys worth.

All ive seen is my out of pocket expenses increase to the point where the money is better off in the bank accruing interest rather than being a PHI plaything.

They cover less and less while their premiums increase.

        • +1

Depends on your situation. I recently got braces which required a lot of upfront extraction works and I've claimed back more benefit than I've paid in premiums so net positive for me. You can argue that not getting dental work done is cheaper but it's been on my list for a while and I have no regrets doing it.

true; it's all done by the book

@donman92: Its still tax avoidance (which is perfectly legal). Tax evasion is the naughty one….

Joined last week. Will churn to bupa after the 6 free weeks. Then back to AHM come July.

    • +9

Can you share your churn wisdom? Why Bupa then AHM specifically?

Coming up to needing PHI to avoid MLS but need to weigh up how much it will cost versus just paying MLS

      • +7

Ahm resets extras in July instead of Jan

        • Do you need to switch to AHM before July for your annual limits to reset or if you join in July onwards your annual limits will reset back? Cheers

        • any other funds reset in July?

    • Churning to Bupa, do they have a limit for every 12 months? With Bupa promo?

      • Last I checked it was 60 days for the Qantas points promi

      • 12 month is a new thing. it used to be 60 days, so now gotta introduce a third provide to the churn cycle.

      • Each promotion is different. Read the terms.

    • +1

So is bouncing back and forth between just two PHIs the best practice for churning? And does it work for all tiers?

Sorry if this is not the best place to ask the question, you’re welcome to redirect me. I’m trying to understand the full picture of how PHI churning works apart from switching between a Jan resetting PHI and a July PHI resetting PHI. Should one switch in those months or just before?

      • You're not alone. I'm new to the PHI churning game and trying to learn from the pros on here. haha

      • +3

I switch between about 5 per annum.

Read some of my past posts, many of which are on this topic.

        • I am new and I am inspired by some of your comments related to this. I am currently with AHM for some years and now I am thinking to switch to Queensland Country Health as your suggested. Since you have a lot of experience about this, if you do not mind, can you share some insurance providers you switch and when normally you do? Thanks for your knowledge.

          • +1

@zozuc: As I've said in other posts, you switch when the promotional terms end with your current policy. Eg, if you switch to QCHF, you switch again once the '6 weeks free' term has expired.

You switch to the provider with the best promotion available at the time you need a new fund.

The health insurance industry is highly regulated. They're all (largely) the same, just different colours on the box.

            • @YesPleaseThankYou: Just want to ask one more question. I am with AHM and already claimed $250 for eye glasses this year. If I switch to new fund, can I claim another $250, supposed reset limit on 1 Jan for example? Thanks again.

              • +2

                @zozuc:

If I switch to new fund, can I claim another $250, supposed reset limit on 1 Jan for example?

I am not sure I understand this question.

It seems to me that you are looking for a health fund that resets limits on 1 July or on Anniversary Date of joining. You then want to know if you can claim for glasses, even though you have already claimed for glasses this financial year with AHM.

If your limits reset, whether on 1 January, 1 July, Anniversary Date, or on any other date, then of course you can claim again. That's the purpose of a limits reset. See, eg:

                When do my limits reset?
We're a little different from some other health funds. Your yearly limits reset each year on your anniversary date - the date you first joined our health fund.

This applies to benefit limits and excesses.

                Source: https://www.queenslandcountry.health/help-centre/faqs/member…

So, you could join QCHF and immediately claim for new glasses. On or around 1 July you could again join AHM (limits reset 1 July), or join Peoplecare (limits reset 1 July), and claim for glasses again.

Please do not rely on my comment. Make your own enquiries and read the Fund Rules.

Yes, switch to another fund. It almost never pays to be loyal.

You can get 6 weeks free here https://www.queenslandcountry.health/campaigns/2024/6Weeks/

      • Hi YPTY, I just looked at the Queensland Country Health, from what I can see from the T&C of the free 6 weeks, it doesnt seem to mention how long you would need to hold the insurance for in order to obtain the offer (the offer is applied to the first 6 weeks of the eligible product) - just wondering whether you happen to know if there is a minimum policy holding period? Thanks

        • 3.The offer of six weeks free private health insurance cover with QCHF is applied to the first
six weeks of the new eligible private health insurance policy issued by QHCF.

You get it immediately upon joining.

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: Thanks for your reply! I thought I have missed something obvious as it seems to be too good to be true ie. so effectively, you pay for 1 week and get 7 weeks worth of cover

            • @blitzpaladin: Where do you get the 1 week from? You are reading something that isn't there.

I have joined, paid nothing, and received 6 weeks free, consistent with the published terms.

              • @YesPleaseThankYou: That's even better, I was under the assumption that you need to at least pay the minimum 1 week in order to join (PS. I havent actually gone through the sign up process, hence was making that assumption)

                Thanks for the reply

                • @blitzpaladin: That's OK, though I'm still not sure where you got the 1 week from. It's not mentioned anywhere that I have seen.

  • I am only using their extra. Am I conisdered as new memeber?

    • Prob not you're in the system already

How does one churn through PHI\? I know the process for credit cards but this seems a bit tougher.

The hard part is not knowing which cover to take up for that specific PHI without experience.

    • +3

Most phi follows gov mandated tiers. Bronze, silver and gold. They will have a plus sometines that falls between the two tiers. So swapping between two bronzes is about the same etc.

Surprised no one comments about data leaks anymore? Anyone? No one?

Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

      • That's got to be turned into a song. Or has somebody already done that, because anybody could, but nobody did because anybody could? …

      • This is brilliant - well done

  • +2

I was a little confused about whether the six weeks started straight away (new to PHI and churning) so this may help some people

6 weeks free terms: Must maintain direct debit and hold eligible cover for 42 consecutive days from the policy start date to get next 6 weeks free. The 6 weeks free will not be issued if you change to an ineligible cover, terminate your cover or suspend your cover during this period.

Is there an exhaustive list regarding what gift cards are redeemable? Nothing in the example table tickles my pickle

    Reward Points
    $200 Premium Payment 25,000
    AirPods (2nd generation) 22,000
    adidas $200 e-Gift Card 20,000
    $200 Extras Limit Increase 20,000
THE ICONIC $200 eGift Card 20,000
Remedial massage up to $115 10,000
    HelloFresh $100 e-Gift Card 10,000
    $50 Specsavers Optical Out-of-Pocket Reward 5,000
    • is that all you see? I noticed you've posted a 2nd gen AirPods so they do have 3rd gen AirPods, 2nd gen AirPods pros and AirPods maxes from what I can see

      • Max points you can earn per calendar year is 40k pts! If you're after like Apple watch s9 (60k+ ish) you need to stay with them beyond 1 year.

    • +2

The Live Better redemption options are disappointing.

  • +10

Their gift cards are very limited so you’re probably best to redeem for a $200/$400 premium payment which is effectively giving you a few extra free weeks. That is why I put $200/$400 in the title and not $250/$500 which you could get from their poor selection of gift card providers.

    • Excellent, thanks for the clarification!

    • You can redeem once in a 12 month period so need to wait 12 months to get the full $400 value

      • Says 60 days????

        • Maybe, I was just guessing

    • Once you redeem the points for premium payment, can you churn out and get it refunded to your bank account?

  • +5

Just a heads up that they dont apply the free weeks immediatly. They apply them approx 1 to 2 weeks after you qualify and delay your points by another 2 weeks. You end up paying extra 3 to 4 weeks (which is a loss if you churn regularly)

    • Thanks for the heads up. Do you find any other funds do this?

      • +1

Nope. I only had issues with medibank last year.
They refused to compensate me for time wasted.

        • T&Cs:

"6 weeks free terms: Must maintain direct debit and hold eligible cover for 42 consecutive days from the policy start date to get next 6 weeks free."

        • Yes, Medibank (like and NIB and Bupa) is one of the more difficult funds to deal with.

I almost always have to escalate requests to complaints as they're so incompetent.

    • My 4 free weeks was applied immediately a few months ago. I did forget to sign up for the point bonus though and lost out on that

  • Does this apply for a overseas visitors as well?

  • +2

Just call your current fund and explain how you are thinking of leaving to take advantage of this deal. They will likely match the offer (but not the gift cards) and you don't have to frick around with churning. I've done it the last 2 years with HCF and will be calling them tomorrow today to match this offer.

    • Current fund (GMHBA Basic Plus Hospital $500 & Mid Extras Set Benefits) : $259.70 (New premium, after rate rise)

This deal for similar product: $ 287.73

Wondering what should I tell GMHBA folks when I call them?

      • I have just asked for 6 weeks free for guaranteed retention. I've never compared figures, nor have HCF challenged premium variation.

      • +1

Just called GMHBA and got 4 weeks free Hospital cover without any hassle.

They were willing to offer 6 weeks free if I was to have extras as well.

      • Let me know how you go please.

      • Same here, keen to know outcome as I'm with BUPA also

      • Same boat. Called BUPA, and was told that I had a 6 wks free discount back in June 2023, and they can't give any more discounts within 12 months.

    • +1

Sure, that saves you a bit. Churning regularly saves you a whole lot more.

  • +1

    just increased their premiums..

    • +3

Means you save more with the 6 weeks free!

  • +1

Can people say more about the churning? Is it just to take advantage of the 6 weeks free?

    • Repeatedly it seems! You get that as well as double the access to certain extras. I’m trying to work out the details too :P

    • +1

The whole idea about churning is primarily to save you money. Some churn for a secondary purpose — to claim for extras a second or third time annually from funds that reset extras limits on 01/07 or on Anniversary Date (eg. Queensland Country Health Fund or Doctors Health Fund.

No. Churn immediately after the churn benefit (eg, 6 weeks free) ends.

Should one switch in those months or just before?

      Whenever you like.

Has anyone used their workplace-discount PHI deal and then churned in and out?

These are usually a 6 to 8% ongoing discount. This is of little benefit to a churner. You can save ~58% per annum by churning through '6 weeks free' offers.

Biggest tip: You have to read the terms of each promo and be prepared to enforce your rights if and when the health fund fails to do its part—which sometimes happens.

Keep things in writing and always escalate via the fund's complaints policy, going to the Cth Ombudsman if the fund further fails. Don't get angry but at the same time, don't be patient. Your time is important.

The problem I see with many participating in these promotions (and some in this thread) is they don't read the terms, then wonder why they didn't get the promotion. Well, likely because you didn't do what was required under the terms.

Finally, keep emotion and loyalty out of it. This is a business transaction. Ignore the 'save' team offers as by that stage you have already found a new fund to move to.

          • +2

@YesPleaseThankYou: My last churn I had to chase HCF for both the 6 weeks free and the gift card. I always read the terms, setup reminders, and of course be polite with customer service but know your rights.

  • I'm wondering if anyone has tried switching to become the main account holder on a family plan.
i.e. sign up again via new policy sign up and be eligible, would it work or not?

  • does it come with a side of ":selling your data as well?"

  • +3

Looking thorough some of the terms, if it has not been said yet, the website states that in order to be eligible for the 6 weeks and the points the customer must maintain the payments and eligible product for 42 consecutive days.

    Taken from their website:

6 weeks free terms: Must maintain direct debit and hold eligible cover for 42 consecutive days from the policy start date to get next 6 weeks free. The 6 weeks free will not be issued if you change to an ineligible cover, terminate your cover or suspend your cover during this period.
Live Better points terms: Must maintain direct debit and hold eligible product for 42 consecutive days from the policy start date to receive Live Better points. The points will not be issued if you change to an ineligible cover, terminate your cover or suspend your cover during this period. Policyholder will require access to a smartphone and will need to download the My Medibank App. Policyholder will need to have registered a My Medibank account, sign up to Live Better via the My Medibank App and track any Live Better activity within 42 consecutive days from the policy start date. Policyholder must also maintain direct debit and continue to hold an eligible product for 42 consecutive days from the policy start date to receive the Live Better Points. Must be 18 years or over and have a valid Australian residential address to register for Medibank Live Better. Live Better points could take up to 10 weeks from the policy start date to be loaded to the policyholder’s Live Better account. Singles and single parents will receive 25,000 Live Better points, and families and couples will receive 50,000 Live Better points.
