Isn't this the bees knees of radios aside from the Baofeng?

    • Anyone know how these compare to the Quansheng?

      Baofeng 5w-10w

      Baofeng 5w-10w

      • +1

        A bit same same really.

      • +3

Have a Google for the chips used, I'd suspect they may well be the same.

        • +1

          UVK5(8) is better

  • +2

    Showing $31.71 for me.

    • A$23 is the welcome deal price (new customer)

      • Interestingly I'm not a new Aliexpress customer but it's showing at USD20 for me at checkout (max 3 units)

        • +1

US$20 = A$31.71 which the superdeal price available to everyone.

          • @RichardL: it is AUD, plus the tax about $25.

            • @DKalex: ~A$25 is the welcome price (new customer)
~A$31.71 is the superdeal price (existing customer)

@RichardL: yes, you are correct. just create a new Gmail account and buy it.

      • Gotya. Also, are you a rep for this? Pretty impressive to have gone all the way since 2017 with no deals or comments until now.

        • what is rep? I just think this is a really good price.

  • Do these get stopped by customs since they haven't been programmed as AU compatible when arriving at border?

    • nope, I bought 5 and they all arrived.

      • Why 5?

        • +7

has 4 more friends than me i guess

        • It's a long story— I initially purchased the UVK5(8) without checking its frequency compatibility. However, before receiving the first UVK5(8), I discovered that it only supports the range of 400MHz-470MHz, whereas the Australian CB radio frequency is 477MHz. Realizing this, I bought the second one, Baofeng UV21pro. However, it encountered issues clearing customs during import.

In response, I purchased the third one, Baofeng UVK5 Plus. All three radios arrived at approximately the same time. After researching online, I learned that I could unlock the UVK5(8) to transmit at the frequency of 477MHz. Additionally, there was a promotion, so I bought a second UVK5(8).

A week later, the USB-C port of my Baofeng UV21pro stopped working. I reached out to customer support, and they promptly sent me a replacement.

          • @DKalex: Hi, can you advise how to unlock and lock again to avoid future troubles?

          • @DKalex: Out of the units you've purchased which would you rate well?

            • +1

@Jonc: I prefer the UVK5(8). The Baofeng radios I bought are large and heavy, and the LCD screen is difficult to see when the backlight is off.

              • @DKalex: are these generally considered good radios? or you "get what you pay for" sort of thing

                • +1

@Kossac: It's one of the best, "get what you pay for" units as they do a lot of different things, although not perfectly well, but great starter radios to get your feet wet. Bonus is there's always people working to improve the software so you get lots of good updates.

                  • @WasBargain: it as you say: " to dip your feet in" this would be exactly what i am doing. could you link some decent reading/ knowledge overview that you have found to be helpful that I can peruse over at all?

                • +1

@Kossac: Yes, it is a good radio. I still can't believe the price is real. It must be a pricing error, especially during the Chinese New Year when everyone is on holiday and no one has time to fix it.

              • +1

                @DKalex: Hey bud,

Just wondering if you've updated yours recently? Apparently major upgrades to Air channel and you can pickup ATC a lot better now? Keen to finally bite the bullet, have been holding off these Chinese units because of how well the A36Plus preformed for the air channels atleast.

I sort of want a HackRF One Portapack H2+ so I can also track all local planes and have them pop up on the map.. 😅

                • +2

@WasBargain: No, I bought these radios for my cruise trip. I programmed them to lock into the CB radio frequency only. Maybe I will explore more functionalities in the future. Thank you for the update.

                  • @DKalex: So does 'your' firmware lock out non-CB bands? Want transmit on CB only but still receive ATC comms

    • I really wouldn’t think they’d be inspecting every package

    • +1

bought 3, was inspected/held and passed

      • +2

        Wow that was fast delivery!!!

    • +1

No. But if caught by the ACMA for using out of band, you can be fined.

      • +1

Yeah but have you ever heard of it happening? Are there ACMA workers driving all around Aus keeping an eye on the airwaves?

        • +2

Yes, I have heard of it happening and the appropriate licensed people generally report those users who are causing interference or using the equipment illegally.

ACMA aren't driving around all the time hunting for it, they go based on reports of others.

          • +1

@geekcohen: My friend worked on a building site, bought some Baofengs and just starting chatting away! Soon he said ‘some guy’ came and told him to stop. I’m assuming it was ACMA. No fine, perhaps that’s reserved for more serious breaches.

            • +1

@Agileduck: Possibly, or he was using a frequency he shouldn't have been and it was a Amateur Radio operator who tracked him down.

I have done that a few times with headphones or other UHF equipment interfering with my Amateur Frequencies. I have a new neighbour who is making noise from something that pulses throughout the day. So I need to track that down and speak to them.

      • +2

Just ownership is enough to get you in trouble. Quick explainer here https://radioindustries.com.au/illegal-radios-warning/

        • Yeah, because it isn't locked. If it is locked down, then you can own it. But unlocked is no good unless you are licensed accordingly.

          • @geekcohen: It needs the tickmark to be legally owned. Locked or not.

            • @hotphil: Technically yes, but if you can show it is locked, that is generally sufficient.

      • -1

you can only use the CB frequency.

        • No. It can be TX for 136-174mhz and 400 to 477mhz.

UHF CB is 476/477mhz. Amateur Radio Frequencies are between 144 MHz to 148mhz (fits in 136-174mhz bracket) and 400 to 440mhz (fitts in 400 to 477mhz bracket) which you need to be licensed for.

So yes, you can use CB frequencies, but it isn't locked just to CB Frequencies. It is open to other bands which you need to be licensed for.

      • +1

Unless you have a licence, every band is out of band.
And also the harmonics on these are almost always terrible so even with a licence they're usually illegal.

        I'm a ham, and a tight arse.
I want to love these cheap radios but they just aint right.

        There are rare exceptions however.

  • Can you listen to things like emergency services and ATC with these? Or are all of those encrypted?

    • +1

Can you listen to things like emergency services

Either Encrypted or Digital. Digital Scanner is about $600.

ATC, I assume you mean Air Traffic Control is AM, so yes, this handheld can receive that.

      • Thanks, I did indeed mean Air Traffic Control.

        • +1

Yes, well they can receive those frequencies.

      • Is there anything in this price range that can transmit on airband frequency? It seems that the only two options are Icom and Yeasu

        • No. You would need a type-approved radio from Icon or Yaesu for those bands.

        • You can via cable….

  • +3

Please note, that these are not locked down and if you are caught with them by ACMA, you can be fined. Whilst they can be programmed for UHF CB AU, they can be used on other licensed frequencies and can result in fines if caught if you are not appropriate licensed.

  • Nice

  • These are not 'walkie-talkies'. You need to be licenced to operate (transmit) these and only on specific frequcies.
These are also not type-approved for use on CB frequencies.

    • Thank you! Someone that finally agrees with me.

    • -2

Legal to receive. And yes, you need a license.

But why is the deal downvoted?

      • Because probably 99% of people on OzB are not licensed.

        • +1

          You probably meant 99.9%.

But still, this is a good unit for a good price? I only wanted a starter unit for Air channels and have been holding off for a while on the A36Plus but because of the recent UK5/UK6 range update for AM, I'm heavily considering this again.

It is a good deal. Wether or not there is user error, that's their problem. At the very minimum, they should understand to never transmit on these. It's still a good deal though..

This will probably just be a pathway to me grabbing a HackRF One Portapack H2+. Wait until you see the legality on these! 😅

          • +1

            @WasBargain: Possibly could be higher.

But yes, it is a good price for a starting out. I've got many Baofeng's and Chinese radios for my Ham Radio Stuff and they work very well.

It is a good deal. Wether or not there is user error, that's their problem. At the very minimum, they should understand to never transmit on these. It's still a good deal though..

Yes, 100%. Its just making sure that people know the risks and where they are allowed to use it. I sense some people have minimal knowledge, hence why I am trying to educate here.

            • +1

@geekcohen: Yeah, that's cool. I was just having a bit more of a go at the guy that downvoted. 😅 But now that I re-read his comment, I can understand he might have just been downvoting because it's titled "Walkie Talkie" which it definitely is not. But you probably should know that if you were actually considering these units. I wouldn't be paying $30 for a single unit, aliexpress walkie talkie.. More like $5.. 🤣

  • +1

thanks for the post! Bought one :)

  • +1

OP, did you pair this with a Nagoya?

  • Thanks OP. I pulled the trigger on one and figured that I may as well grab a programming cable, external speaker/mic and longer whip antenna whilst I was at it. Came to USD $24.98 in total (AUD $38.21 pending on my card that doesn't have international transaction fees).

(For the record, I'm one of the 0.1% / 1% / pick a % on OzBargain with an amateur radio license. I've had it for decades, but haven't used it in years. This might get me interested in 2m and 70cm again.)

    • can you link the antenna you got at all?

  • Does anyone know if these have private group with encryption?

So if I want my kids to have some fun on UHF without some useless m-trucker informing them about his latest fling or the !@#$ up ahead who can't drive … is it possible?

    • +2

use DCS or CTCS, google it.

    • Does anyone know if these have private group with encryption?

No, they are not digital for encryption. Its analogue only.

As per DKalex, look at DCS or CTCS programming.

  • OP do you mean you can configure the radio for Aus CB bands or there is special firmware to do this? If the latter can you link please.

  • Anyone else have issues with their order? Created a new account and placed an order which was then cancelled for “security reasons.” Tried with another account and same issue. Haven't had an issue with previous orders.

    • Looks like the special discount has ended.

    • I'm getting an error in my cart saying "can't ship to Australia"

      • In my instance, the checkout page says "security reasons". The app says the discount expired, and adjusted the price to $38.

        • my phone app show $23.91 AUD now, and my account isn't new customer.

      • I just put through my order and everything was fine.

  • I just put through an order because of the U.S.'s overnight cyber attack.. 😅

  • -1

I just got a email saying that Customs have not cleared my order.

    • Failed to clear at import customs? I got 3 items showing this message, but they all arrived.

    • Check 17TRACK instead. I had the same issue before and it was cleared later.

    • I've just checked mine and have got the "failed to clear at import customs" on the 21/3.

  • Received by local delivery company

  • Received. Thanks OP!
