Worth buying one before ACMA ban Quansheng like Baofeng.
"It is illegal to import, distribute, lease, offer for sale, or sell any Baofeng radios in Australia (Radiocommunications Act)".
Got a link to where it says this?
I got this message from eBay when I tried to list my UV5R last week:
"It is not possible to list this item. The Australian government has informed us that it is illegal to import, distribute, lease, offer for sale, or sell any Baofeng radios in Australia (Radiocommunications Act).{e209281-1235364x}"
I searched the Act but found no reference to Baofeng.

Appears to be non compliance, therefore "illegal".

https://secomms.com.au/legal/Thats right, that is what I have been saying in pretty much all my comments. They aren't legal because they are non-compliant out of the box.
@geekcohen: I searched the ERAC database and Baofeng nor Quansheng show any approvals.

@Tradey: Correct. So everyone who has bought them is legally not allowed to have them.
Here is their official website:
OK, so I am after two cheap walkie talkie/radios. Call it doomsday prepping type purchase. Seeing as these seem to be illegal what are legal options to have two way conversations with a family member in case network/power outage (like VIC had recently)
Over what sort of distance and terrain in what sort of environment? Will you have Line-of-Sight, or close to?
I'm thinking hundreds of meters to maybe 1-5km? Typical suburb life but also will use them when going MTB riding, so trees/forests but no homes.
I was going to just grab two of these Quansheng UV K5 (8), but I'm out of depth here and seems like they can't just talk to one another securely nor easily?

For just a few hundred metres, 1 or 2 watts is generally fine. At 5km / suburbs / trees, I'd be going for the full 5 watts, but even then there's no guarantee that they'll be able to reach each other. There may be one or more repeaters in your area that you could use, but the number of boofheads on them seems to rise exponentially with population.

As per previous comments here (and elsewhere), although they can be setup to be used on the UHF CB band, they aren't type approved for that purpose. I'd buy a couple of name brand, type approved 5 watt units instead (I actually have four).
@Colin2905: Seriously appreciate your help and advice! Do you have any recommendations of a 5w type approved unit? Ideally, cheapish?
@mxlmxlmxl: ICOM, GME and Uniden are the usual name brand suspects, but perhaps cost more than you want to pay. In the "cheapish" but type approved category there's something from AUSCB that I've seen mentioned, but I know nothing about them other than what's on their web site and a few comments on OzBargain.
@Colin2905: Thanks! And with those, no licence required and from what I gather, you use one of 80 channels except a couple?
And i'm a total idiot here, but assume none then are secure? anyone can listen in on them?
no licence required
Correct. The HF and UHF CB bands have been covered by a class licence for quite a while. See https://www.acma.gov.au/licences/citizen-band-radio-stations…

There's quite a few that you shouldn't use. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB

Correct.
