    optimized for browsing ozbargain

    But it's not a Dell Optiplex….

    • +3

HP stands for Hitting Positive votes on Ozbargain.

      • Need a HN for jv

  • +16

That's a very cheap plex/jellyfin server right there. These are really making raspberry pi's unattractive now.

    • Much higher energy usage, which is often the reason people use the Pi. These are much more functional though imo

      • I used to go for the pi's based on energy usage, but realistically you're spending at least double this to get one at the moment. It'll take a long time to break even with electricity prices.

Is there any reason I shouldn't get something like this for a pensioner currently using a nearly 20 yr old PC?

    • +8

      Nope.
Definitely worthwhile just for Windows 10 and the security that comes with it alone.

    • +2

Only reason I can think of is Win10 support ending soon, might want a Win11 supported machine?

Other than that they're pretty bullet proof, I have a micro version running 24/7

      • I've installed Windows 11 on a number of 3rd-6th gen Dell laptops.
If they have TPM 1.2 or 2.0 and Secure boot, all it takes is a simple registry edit.
Perhaps Microsoft will decide to block updates for these devices in future, but for now they work just fine.

    • +20

Windows 11 not being OFFICIALLY supported is the only flag.
      But if you let me fly off on a tangent for a moment;

The several pensioners I support, are now on Linux Mint. Hear me out.
Unless the pensioner is actually IT savvy, 99.5% of what they do, is web-browser based, office/PDF and perhaps printing.
Maybe USB connect a digital camera or USB storage?

Out of the box, Linux Mint does all this, in a TOTALLY familiar, near identical (and in the case of USB sticks and printers, easier) way.

But this isn't the biggest factor.
      It's not an elitist 'Linux vs Windows' thing at all;
It's a human condition thing; a free confidience boost.

I've worked extensively in aged care and the most common thing you find in the elderly regarding technology is anxiety and fear.
Being able to tell them "You can't get viruses, you can't be hacked" (hyperbole, but close enough in this use case) has increased engagement and confidience by at least a magnitude.

Even the little things we take for granted like being able to 'obviously' tell if a popup is from Windows or is website generated can be scary. Especially the speaking ones.
"Nope, they're ALL fake, you never need to do anything, you never need to pay anything" once again, is a HUGE relief; especially with the recent stories on A Current Affair.
The confidience to ALWAYS ignore, is brilliant.

That combined with cloudflares filtered DNS (1.1.1.3 = Malware + Adult Content filtered) and confidience totally soars.

Anyway, I'd be happy to discuss further, but you get the idea, just something worth considering.

      If anyone downvotes, please comment.
I'd be genuinely curious to hear your experience please, because mine has been nothing but praise.
Please share, as I'd love to learn what pitfalls you've encountered so I can help my clients avoid them.

      • +2

Thanks for that, appreciate the information you provided including the bit about 1.1.1.3.

        • More than happy to share :) Any questions, ask away.

Having printers 'just work' and not require drivers was a big deal (also from an Admin POV, lol, nobody likes printers :P).

But most useful was that the Cinamon desktop that Mint ships with, does the 'Mac Thing' and puts USB sticks you insert, on the desktop.
I swear, 'file explorer' is the devil when it comes to helping new users, it's understandably complicated if you've never seen one before!

      • what remote desktop do you use or do you ssh when there is a problem?

    • Install bluefin on it via ublue.it and its a set and forget easy to use PC for life, for Grandma.

      • thanks for the tip , going to have a look at bluefin - never heard of it. is it better then nobara linux ( febora built for gaming)?

        • then just use bazzite in that case. (also part of universal blue)

immutable is better by default, root filesystem can't/won't get corrupted and containerised apps are the future.

  • +2

Dang still waiting for the micro version to be this priceee. need a spare.

  • That's a bloody bargain!

    • +1

Yikes, I know it's refurbished, but bloody…geez you'd think they'd clean that off.

  • Does anyone know how many 3.5 hard drives I can fit in these?

    • -2

      Just 1.

      • +1

From what I've seen it should support 2?

        • +1

It does. I have 2x 3.5 drives and a SSD in one I use as an unraid server. Has been bullet proof for 4 or 5 years. After that you out of onboard sata ports.

    • I got one last deal and have 2 3.5" and 1 2.5" in there.

  • I want one because it's a bargain but don't have a use for it… thoughts? Maybe Home Assistant but this might be overkill…

    • +7

If you don't have a use for it, save the money for another future purchase that you do need.

    • +1

Home theatre PC. Either streaming or using hard drive files.
Do not listen to PainToad - hes like the devil on your shoulder. You deserve to treat yourself, even if its something you will never use. Spend that money!

      • I love me some cheap tech; but the better HW codec support from 8th gen would have me second guessing a 6th gen HTPC.
It'd work finel just needlessly processor intensive (I recently upgraded my 6th gen NUC to 8th gen for this reason).

      • +3

hes like the devil on your shoulder. You deserve to treat yourself, even if its something you will never use. Spend that money!

The devil on the shoulder would be telling you to waste your money, not save it.

    • +1

If you don't need it now, just wait for another year and the Windows 11 compatible ones will be a lot cheaper.

      • +1

What are the factors driving this trend?

        • +3

Older tech gets cheaper with age…

        • +2

IT equipment gets leased for 3-4 years, after that they get sold off.

          • @JimB: Thanks everyone for your replies. Besides the corporate lease cycle, is there anything like a new Windows version that might mean reduced support for these older chips?

            • @BlueSkyAPI: No.

Even 10 year old CPUs which windows 11 aren’t designed for will still work with Win11 (with a boot manager to install).

These days Microsoft aren’t interested in selling you an operating system.

They make more money on subscription services/softeware that run on windows

        • +1

This 30+ year trend has existed while IT matures and countries were somewhat stable and driven by corp & govt productivity gains, budget savings, security/software support and product availability while being financially packaged into 3 - 4 year leases. Sadly this trend may be overcome by worldly storm clouds.
In the meantime the seller bneacttrader is my preferred store.

  • does anyone know if this is ddr3 or 4?

  • Is this sufficient enough as a Steam dedicated server hosting?

    • +2

      Steam dedicated server

Do you mean a dedicated server for some game from Steam?

      • yeah

        • Wouldn't the depend what game and the system requirements of running a server for that game?
