[NSW] 50% off Licence Renewal Fees for Eligible Drivers @ NSW Government

2160

This deal has been going for some time but will end on the 17th February 2024. If you have a good driving record, you may be eligible for an automatic 50% discount on your licence renewal fee under the Fair Go for Safe Drivers Scheme.
You can renew your license up to 6 months before expiry and I have just renewed mine that expires after the 17th February 2024 and I still received the 50% discount so worth checking when your license expires and if you can renew early to take advantage of the scheme before it ends.

need to give more monies to ukraine and israhel

  • +30

Government must hate safe drivers. It's costing them money, generating less revenue.

    • +13

It's silly hey, I've got a perfect driving record and thankfully got the benefit but in saying that safe driving doesn't always correspond with people with no infringements.

I know plenty of window lickers who haven't been booked and claim they are safe drivers. They are the ones who will do 60km in a 80km zone and constantly sit in the right despite not overtaking etc and virtually almost cause accidents around them without even realising it.

      • +5

Agree with you there, some people just have better luck and don't get caught.

I still think however that it's a bit of a shit thing to remove right now with the high cost of living. It's a good motivator at the moment and if it means that some drivers will think twice before driving like assholes to potentially save some money then heck why not? It may not be statistically significant and that's probably what some pencil pusher has said in a meeting for this to be removed.

        • Thanks Kellogg's

        • +2

a shit thing to remove right now with the high cost of living.

NSW Government increased Opal fares, Harbour bridge / tunnel cross prices, etc….
all during COVID times, when people were in lockdowns and not driving or traveling on public transport,
and when people lost their jobs too.

          Bean counters, gotta bean count.

      • +2

More likely the ones that bother you do a speedo 60 in a 60 zone so are actually doing 57-58 which infuriates the majority of drivers who insist on going 5% over the speed limit …. at least.

I have had this discussion in car forums where they insist you have to take speedo error into account and go faster than what the speedo says.

Nothing seems to bothers many drivers more than a car doing the speed limit and leaving a safety buffer between them and the next car.

Yes I am one of those “slow” people.

        • +6

Doing 60 in an 80 zone isn't speedo tolerance, move to the left and let others pass you :).

I have no issue with people doing the maximum speed taking into consideration a few KMs for Speedo readings, I do have an issue with a 20km difference and people being in the right hand lane.

          • +1

@OzBaggins: I have had some crazy tailgating and overtaking manoeuvres done to me for simply having the temerity to go 60 in a 60 and 80 in an 80 zone.

But what really sends people off their skull is when you do 50 in a 50 zone.

This is despite the area having frequent stationary speed cameras.

            • @Grok: I believe you, and I don't condone that behaviour under those circumstances myself. Unfortunately there's flapjacks everywhere and no matter what "there's always one".

      • +6

who will do 60km in a 80km zone

        This.

and constantly sit in the right despite not overtaking etc

        This.

and virtually almost cause accidents around them without even realising it.

        This.

    • Also why they never really want people not to speed etc. With today's technology you could almost completely eradicate it if you really wanted to. But they don't.

    • Exactly. No incentive to drive safe anymore, time to burn rubber!

      • Hell yeah brother

  • +13

I respond to incentives so I guess I'll just drive like a maniac going forward.

  • +1

If this is your first licence, make sure that you are exactly full 5 years. Even a day short will not be eligible for the discount.

    • This is exactly what is happening with my license. Expiring in April and cant take advantage of this, just short of 2 months and shame that its expiring permanently 😢

    • Thanks, almost moving to NSW. A couple years short :(

  • +8

What a joke. They're removing the only incentive/benefit for people to maintain a clean record.
Benefits for getting points back, but that only helps if you've lost them.

    • +4

Other than the incentive of not being fined and accruing points when you do the wrong thing?

    • Exactly and now you only benefit if you break the rules first : (

    • The only benefit? You've got too much money if the cost of speeding fines aren't a problem to you.

      • You're mistaking a lack of penalty for a benefit.

  • +3

After I got this I lost 9 points

    • +3

      Correlation ≠ causation.

    • Winning

      • +1

I sold each point for $500

  • +3

Of course it's coming to an end. As if the NSW government wants its residents to be able to afford things.

  • +1

oh good just got a speeding fine over xmas was worried about the 50% off deal for renewal next year now i guess it doesn't matter anymore.

    • Depending on when you can renew and how long you can freely hold off paying the fine (or get it waived due to good behaviour), you can still get rhe discount.

I got my 50% off licence renewal while the fine was issued but not paid yet.

      • haha dont think i can hold it off for a year tho.

      • Get it waived due to good behaviour by who? RTA? That's a 10-year good behaviour bond. TEN FRICKING YEARS. A REAL JOKE.

Immigrants get their citizenship faster than that.

  • Does the license have to be held for 5 years on your unrestricted license, or does the time for provisions count?

have held your NSW licence continuously for 5 years

  • +3

I've often thought an incentive for safer drivers would be free annual renewals for people who've gone 5 or 10 years without a traffic infringement.

    • What a great idea!

      Roland for PM!

    • +1

Mate, in the UK, it's literally a free licence. 20 quid for a decade.
We're getting totally ripped off here.

  • +2

damn, they are getting rid of all sorts of incentives.

Anyways, I guess we should still stick to the traffic rules, not worth it for the fines , cost for a speeding fine can cost as much as a 10 yr lic renewal

  • +3

I think it was originally launched around 2013? So fair enough, everyone within 10 years should've had the opportunity to renew at least once under this scheme, with a very small number being able to squeeze in a couple due to fortunate timing (i.e. renewed right away when the scheme first launched and again just before it ends).

    • -2

Not if you’re in your 20s

  • +5

So they're ending a reward/incentive to not break the road rules, and replacing it with a reward/incentive scheme to return an extra demerit point per year, which only benefits people who broke the rules in the first place!?

And they're also recruiting international experts to work out why the road toll is skyrocketing? 😂

    • +2

But which scheme is affecting the bottomline of their budget? As that's all they care about.

      • +4

And by returning an extra demerit point each 12 months allows recidivist offenders to commit more offences before being suspended = more $. What a clown show 😂

        • +3

Shame they don't just give 1 point to everybody each year. Save up and commit an atrocity every 10 years without losing your license haha

          • +2

@Rail Rider95: Every day of the year, would be someone's 10-year anniversary to commit that 'atrocity'.

This is sounding like the "The Purge", but for drivers to hoon during their own 24-hour period !

  • +1

Thankyou labor government for cost of living relief (not)!

    • You can thank the Libtards AND the Labtards for this mess. Responsibility lies with both parties.

      • -1

This one is specifically by NSW Premier from the labor government. Not sure why you're saying it's both? I'm no liberal fan either, but pretty sure it was Chris Minns that looks to scrap this incentive.

        • +3

The 2022-2023 Budget Review was released by Matt Kean on the 3rd of Feb 2023. You can clearly see on page 30 that the Fair Go for Safe Drivers initiative was proposed to be scrapped by the then NSW Liberal government. Labor simply took their ideas and ran with it.

Ergo, responsibility lies with both parties.

  • +2

Also in theory we are all getting a single demerit point back if you can last 2 more days until the 17th… https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/news/demerit-point-return-sch…

    • +2

Not me. I haven't racked up a single demerit

      • You'll be in credit.

  • -4

AFAIK this scheme has been going on for yonks and will never end. Had this (deal?) twice now for 10 years total.

Only catch is you got to have no traffic offences commited in the last 3 years methinks.

    • -1

      RTFM

    • You are the suppository of misinformation

  • i thought it's going to have it forever, didn't know it's going to end soon, so checked the site, it says: be eligible on the day you renew your licence, regardless of the expiry date, which means even your licence is not expire, you still can review it ?

    • +3

As mentioned earlier, you can only renew your licence within six months of expiry

  • +2

why on earth would they end this?

    • +3

      To make more money.

  • +1

Pretty likely this will be extended.
Easy 'hey, look, we the government did something for the cost of living' news headline to just keep it going.

  • They’ve kept this very quiet- last I knew there was an election promise that if they were to rescind this incentive, those with good driving records would get the right to have the fine waived for a future offence. Not to just get demerit points forgiven. (Which is problematic in itself, tbh.)

I’m good until 2029 but clearly this govt is more interested in revenue than in recognising people like me that have driven for over 30 years, without ever having even racked up a single fine or point demerit. Thanks for nothing, ALP!

    • +2

That was Liberal's policy, and was only going to happen if they won the state election, which they did not. Labor's alternative was the 1 point back per year scheme.

      • +3

Thanks and very glad Libs policy didn’t happen. Can you imagine (conservatively) a couple of hundred thousand drivers all out there on the roads breaking the rules, even once, because they had a ‘freebie’? Chaos and mayhem!!

  • +1

Does anyone know of you are still eligible if you were busted for speeding, but got off due to having no previous convictions? I would assume not

    • +2

you can look in the app to see if you have any demerit points listed. if it's listed there, then you're not eligible

    • +1

Yes still eligible as I just renewed mine with same situation as yours.

      • Amazing thanks, will apply as mine expires in a couple of months.

  • +12

Got a speeding fine on a Friday. Paid for it instantly. Went in to Service NSW on the Saturday. Still got the discount.

    • +5

We need a special OzBargain award for that 👏🏆

      • +1

Cherry on top, my licence was expiring on the Sunday. If I hadn't gotten the fine, I wouldn't have checked.

    • +2

You definitely should be commended for this. One of the rare times someone beats the system. ✊

    • +1

Got a speeding fine on a Friday. Paid for it instantly.

The points take several weeks/months to show up on your license. You can drag it out further by requesting a review, nominating a driver (hint: nominate yourself), etc.

Useful info in case you're license renewal is coming up.

  • +1

Got my fresh license in 2015 for 10 years and paid full price because I didn't know half price was a thing after 5 years.

Looking forward to getting this in 2025 but now it's scrapped?? :(

    • They tell you at the counter, they told me. I didn’t ask.

    • They definitely tell you at the counter if you're eligible.

  • Good old ALP removing even more benefits on the sly. Minns will be a 1-termer, just like Alboboboboooo

    • +6

The Liberals were going to remove it mid last year if they got in.

    • +6

Labor just left this policy removal in place that the Liberals started before they got kicked out.

    • +6

Been feeding on Sky News a bit too much there? As already noted by others, the Libs set this plan in motion well before Labor took office.

  • +1

    What? Why they ending this?

    • +1

To get us pay more of course, what else can there be. All those BS in TV about easing the cost of living my 4rs3….

  • VIC should adopt a similar scheme as well!

    • If anything, VIC would probably introduce extra tax for those drivers with offences. VIC loves to make extra money off public at every chance with taxes.

  • +1

Not sure I like the Minns government's performance so far. They seem to be gutting all the good stuff. Parkn'Pay was great so of course it had to go, and now the safe driver renewal incentive. And zero plans for new metro or other rail lines beyond what was started by the Libs.

    • Haven’t they cancelled a lot of infrastructure programs…at a time of record immigrants. Guess that team Minns recruited as soon as he won the election that are working on a pathway to treaty have to be paid for. The head of it is on several hundred thousand a year.

    • What was Parkn'Pay?

  • +3

Toll Relief rebate won't be continuing after June 2024 either. Instead they have the Toll Cap where you need to spend $60/week. So for people like me who spend enough to qualify for the Toll Relief, but not enough for the Toll Cap (my average spend is more like $30/week), you now miss out on that.

  • +1

i came across this last week when i was checking my expiry date and couldn't believe it. got the discounted 10year forever ago now, and up for renewal in about 9 months so ineligible before scheme ends. it's a travesty. probably one of the ONLY govt/servicensw initiatives that has made any sense, and should just be a default…

nothing but pure gouging & mindless revenue raising, like the entirety of what revenue nsw and their police force & invisible parking fine brigades do.

  • +3

Just in case some one is wondering. You need to go in to a ServiceNSW location and be between 21 and 44 years old to get they 10 year license renewal.

Also do their eye test if you wear glasses.

  • +2

It seems that drivers that don’t incur fines and lose demerit points don’t get rewarded for being good drivers, it more like that because the 50% discount reduced NSW government revenue that it was cheaper to give back demerit points which cost nothing to the government.

    • +2

If you give back demerit points, people can reoffend without fear of losing their licence. More fines and more money for the state coffers!

  • +2

Had a read of Service NSW media release -

    NSW Premier Chris Minns, said:
“Reducing the road toll and rewarding safe driving across the state is the aim of this trial and we hope it gives drivers that little bit of extra incentive to achieve a spotless record."
“It’s time we put safety back at the centre of our road rules, not revenue raising."
“This is an appropriate way for good drivers to earn a point back.”

If they were good drivers they would not need to earn back a point would they?

But no mention that I could find about removing the "automatic 50% discount on your licence renewal fee under the Fair Go for Safe Drivers Scheme."
    Funny about that.

  • +3

Thanks OP. Just checked and my licence is due for renewal in May so I can renew now to get the 50% discount. Think I might pay it now in case I forget to do it just before the discount expires.

Oh and there's a merchant fee of 0.44% to 1.76% for using credit and debit cards. No way to avoid this from what I can work out. Not sure if this can be removed if paying in person with cash??

    • +2

The service centres don't even accept cash anymore … (well at least the Parramatta and city Wynyard ones)

    • Put your debit/EFTPOS card in the slot, select the account type and enter your PIN.

  • +1

Perhaps the NSW Labor Party did some modelling.

They saw that a bigger proportion of the population have points demerited,
compared to all the good drivers.

This creates their own 'voting base' to satisfy,
so these demerited drivers will vote Labor next election :-D

  • My one expires in Oct can't seem to renew as this is more than 6 months away

  • +1

Oh boo man. Mine expires Sep 2025 and was looking forward to getting the discount.
