  • Question, so you need a modem/router for nbn fttc or can it just be run with the nbn box and a router e.g. Amazon eero 6 plus? Not sure if I should buy this or just take the free router with superloop. Any advice please?

    • +1

      You don't require a modem/router all-in-one for FTTC. The nbn box is your FTTC NCD modem. Plug in the eero 6+ router or Asus RT-AX router to the nbn box.

      For FTTC you can use the Asus RT-AX82U V2 AX-5400 Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 Router $249 @ JB Hi-Fi.

    • You're after this

      Same thing without VDSL

      In theory the above will work with any existing modem, but some VDSL modems are absolute trash (ie the cheap TP Link ones) so the $80 extra here is better than buying a good VDSL modem + the non-VDSL router.

      • Amazing thank you for your help and sharing this link ☺

  • just nbn box is sufficient. This is a modem and router.

    Thank you guys so much, superloop is offering a free eero 6 plus router I guess I'll just go with that. Really appreciate your help

    • Check here to see if you're eligible to swap from FTTC to FTTP.

      No they are different.

      RT-AX82U is a router for FTTP, FTTC, HFC and fixed wireless that connects to the nbn box.

      DSL-AX82U is a VDSL2 modem and router that plugs into the wall socket for FTTN and FTTB.

    who needs VDSL2 these days.. still some i guess but very niech

    • +2

      Isn't like 40% of the country on VDSL2?

      • +2

        Yeah around 45% is on VDSL2.

        FTTN = 31%
        FTTC = 11%
        FTTB = 4%
        FTTP = 20%
        HFC = 20%
        Wireless = 7%
        Satellite = 4%

        FTTP is increasing while FTTN and FTTC is decreasing.

    I bought the RT-AX82U from JB-Hifi this week, upgrading from an RT-AC68U with the intention of using the old router as an AI mesh node but the signal strength from the new router is so much better that I don't need a mesh node at the other end of the house. Very impressed, is a nice piece of gear.

    • I also bought it, my question is, do you get gigabit speeds over wireless?

      I haven't setup mine yet. I feel like returning it and getting something better.

      • I've only got 100mbit nbn so hadn't really tested the throughput so I just copied a movie from my desktop to a laptop via wireless and it averaged 113MB/sec - pretty close to gigabit when you consider the network overhead.

        • I have a RT-AC88U and I am replacing it with RT-AX82U, I just bought it because OzB 😂

          I don't know if I should keep it. I got 1000/50 connection recently which I can not use with the current router.

      • Digital Citizen has RT-AX82U speedtests graphs. They got around 700Mbps max on Wi-Fi 6.

        • It depends on signal interference as well, he could be in an area with a lot of other Wi-Fi 6 users.

          Unfortunately, the laptop we had when we reviewed previous Wi-Fi 6 routers was not compatible with this standard, so we cannot compare ASUS RT-AX82U with other routers.

          I don't know what he means by that lol

          • @sqheaven: Not sure if it makes any difference but they would have tested V1, while V2 is now being sold and 3+ years of firmware updates may have also had some impact. The 113MB I noted last night while transferring a 14GB file is ~904mbit which is a fair bit higher than 700 they achieved.

    • Did you get the one linked above?

      • I got the non-DSL version for $249 from JB that someone else linked above.

  • would this be better then this old router I use https://www.asus.com/au/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/…
