Price is decent to save the fuss of roll your own promox server + Linux OS + some docker containers , which is free btw

    • +1

unraid is alot less fuss, and got good community support

    • Bit different I would say. Proxmox doesn't have raid/unraid or storage redundancy. You will need some sort of NAS with proxmox. Like running TrueNAS or Linux with some sort of raid combo. Too much technical and not easy to setup if you don't know linux.

Unraid's app store has easy to use templates with few click you have containers or VM's ready to go.

I have Proxmox and love it along with Unraid server. Both go hand in hand. Yes you can only have unraid and it can do it all, but I need redundancy and separation in case something goes down.

      • +1

I am pretty sure you can setup ZFS in Promox for storage redundancy

  • +2

Is it really worth it over TrueNAS?

    • There are differences, but if you like TrueNAS and don't have issues I won't change.

Unraid as opposite of TrueNAS, as name implies. Main benefit is you can have mix & match drives with different capacity so perfect for home server. TrueNAS can be used at home and small/medium businesses. Lots of comparison online and different use case for all.

For "storage" I would encourage using ZFS if retention and integrity are important.
The live snapshotting feature due to copy on write is also very good.

        • Unraid has ZFS with 6.12.4 and I use snapshotting as my daily task. Don't need it live. Again, bit different between raid & unraid, so different use case. I have different size disks which I can't really use in raid.

          • @ace310: I meant "live" as in, it's safe to snapshot because when it's captured it contains the whole file and not partial write due to CoW.

            • @Commodore64: Agree there are pros & cons. Unraid works for me doesn't mean it's good for everyone. I don't need live snapshots of my plex media, which I can easily download again in case of drive failure. All critical data has redundancy so it works for me. I am not a linux guy though I work in IT. Unraid is a perfect bridge between UI & command line that it works.

              • +1

@ace310: That is true, it's easy to download your <linux ISOs> again.

    • +2

      Yes.
For the home user, Unraid makes far more sense than TrueNAS because you can configure the array in a way that is far more power efficient than any striped array.
Home users are not businesses storing mission critical information. Most people running home servers are doing so as a media server. Home media servers do not need striping, checksumming or any of the other high-performance features zfs offers. It is better to save on power.

  • Was curious until I saw that I would need the pro license due to >= 12 drives.
I suppose it's good for those who don't want to get below the hood…. will stick with Proxmox and virtualising the NAS.

  • Dang I just upgraded at full price last week. I think I need to handover my OzBargain membership.

Lol, yep hand it in. Their website was already showing the sale was coming!

I merged my media and cctv storage into the one system, pushing me passed my 6 drive limit of the basic license. I went through the user interface to upgrade and it took me to the upgrade page. No mention of upcoming sales there.

  • Happy with Unraid, simple and easy to use

    verb: license
    noun: licence

    • this is what chatgpt returns:

The words "license" and "licence" are different spellings of the same word, but they are used in different regions.

In American English, the correct spelling is "license," while in British English, Canadian English, and many other varieties of English, the correct spelling is "licence." The difference lies in the usage and preferred spelling within each specific regional variant of English.

Despite the spelling variation, both terms refer to the same concept—a legal document or official permission that grants someone the right to do something or use a particular item, such as driving a vehicle, practicing a profession, or using copyrighted material.

  • Highly recommend of you are starting out. I ran my unraid server for 4 or 5 years before doing a ground up proxmox build. Both are good in their own way, but for starting out UnRaid is really quite good and simpler to keep everything up dated and patched

  • Good timing. Thanks Op. Will upgrade my plus to pro licence.

  • Licence not License.

  • Debian and docker still has my heart 🤤

  • It is a single licence per device? Can I run two with single licence?

    • Licence is linked to usb drive used to boot. And no you can't run 2 devices with same usb as I believe it is checked online. Again don't know if you don't connect to internet what will happen.

  • What is the difference between different licensing tiers? Just the number of devices attached? Or are there any feature differences?

    • +1

Just number of storage drives which is counted on boot. USB plugged drive attached later are not counted
