If this had internet radio I'd be all over it. Still looking for a decent internet radio system under $100.
Still , I think it would make a terrific christmas present for my old man so will research it.

    • Why not buy:

      1. an Android phone (eg, HTC ChaCha $56 - $65 recently on OzB)
      2. download TuneIn Radio (Internet tadio; pro ver can record: $0.99 recently)
      3. [If you want it, ABC may have an app for DAB+ streams in AU]

      Total cost -way- under $100

Prefer standalone stereo box? DSE had DAB+ + Internet radio + Apple port [etc.] for ~$130

to add to lVl comments and your question wolfe -

something like this might be functional and reasonably portable - if you're dad's an iMan as opposed to an Mandroid….. http://dicksmith.com.au/product/C9993/grundig-dab-digital-ra…

if he likes things simple i noted in DSE today that the grundig retro one was cheap also…about 70 bucks from partial recall. http://www.grundig.net.au/details.aspx?pid=1042&tid=12&code=…

personally i'm not much a fan of digital in the country as stations are limited, as mentioned below by abc and sam. i bought the tangent duo for 99 dorrar from rio sound and vision when it came on sale, in a classy almond wood finish (with great service from the store.) it's a cracker, sound is excellent as well as station selection, and i can stream off the player or tablet via aux. for us it's fundamentally a dish-washing accompaniment and gets the tick. it has heirloom invisibly written on it!

        http://tangent-audio.com/en/model/91_Duo-clock-radio.html

        hope this helps.

      • +1

Because that's a) more expensive b) requires internet connectivity and data usage c) is a way more complicated solution than his old man would need.

        • some partially relevant points ross but wolfe's thoughts as i understood were about internet radio for under 100 buckaroos. if his dad has the internet then he is only one plug away from the solution.

wolfe's dad's a smart man and not fussed with any mild complications.

      • I do just that, use TuneIn radio on an Android. The big plus is that you get access stations all over the world too.
These are the scenarios where I would find DAB+ radio handy:
        1. During AFL games my preferred radio station does not broadcast over the Net, due to AFL rights.
        2. Listening to radio in the car. Net radio may drop out a lot on 3G while driving.

Hand held model also available. Same price, bigger discount.

    • +1

Depends what you want really - a portable radio or a pocket sized mp3 unit. The discount price is over inflated I think so just get according to your needs. Personally, I much prefer a portable radio unit because it is more versatile and has a built in speaker.

    • +1

This one doesn't have FM only DAB & DFM.

    • Appears to be out of stock in vic

      • Still some stock in Nunawading

        • Online check shows out of stock. Did you physically see them in store?

        • when i had checked last (before posting the above ) Nunawading was showing in stock online..

    • Just dropped into the Queanbeyan store and saw that the portable version is in stock but not on discount. Not sure if its gone back up.

Thanks heaps Steptoe and Ezarc for posting up the clearance sale. I bagged a pack of 2x DSE 15Watt fluorescent energy saving globes for $2!

  • Is there an audio out function on this - I'm keen to play digital radio through my stereo, maybe connecting it through the aux out on my stereo. Presumably I could do it through the headphone jack on the portable one Steptoe mentions, but that only runs on battery. Does anyone know if this one could do that?

Edit - I just saw on the features - "3.5mm earphone jack".

    • +1

      On the specs page

      "Headphone Jack Yes"

      edit You found it

  • Has anybody used this model before? I purchased a Pure One Mini sab+ in the past and since sold it at the volume was not very loud, even at maximum.

  • +1

Is there any sound quality difference between these vs listening to local AM radio stations via the Internet? I'm assuming these make AM sound more better and adds little to FM, right?

  • +4

TBH, I have never been compelled at the notion of Australia digital radio. Current analog programming is fairly lacklustre and none of the mainstream music that the stations play interests me in the least. I guess the main advantages are a few extra stations and nice little display which gives you the song/artist IDs and more control over playback such as recording/pausing/etc. I still remember taping songs off the radio onto my cassettes in order to listen to them on my Walkman.

    • +1

Indeed. I want to get all excited and stuff about this but then I listen to the analogue radio stations and that reminds me what an annoying crock radio tends to be these days. :/

    • +2

If you're a cricket fan, then it's worth it for ABC Grandstand which is digital only. Admittedly it is available on Internet radio. Occasionally ABC will have a special event station also.

I also find that for a small radio AM stations sound a lot better. A decent AM analogue tuner will probably sound equally as good… but you don't get those in small radios (well maybe in something like a tivoli, but then you're talking $$$'s).

Biggest frustration is on windy days the signal drops in and out for me - on analogue you can still listen but with digital bad signal can mean no sound. That's when I plug the iPhone in and start up tunein radio…

    • .

  • +5

I dunno why digital radios are sold in regional areas where they dont work :(

    • My local DSE here in Sydney stopped selling Dab+ radios. The reason they told me was that they were getting too many returns from people on the Upper Northern Beaches not getting reception. To get this deal I have to travel twice the distance to the next closest DSE further away.

  • +8

    I love buying Bush @ Dick's.

  • A word of warning. Digital radios can have really flaky reception. I bought a couple of different ones for my workplace last year, and they wouldn't pick up any signal unless it was right by the window (I don't work in a cavern or anything like that). With FM, you can get a signal with a little fuzz in some hard to reach areas- but with Digital, it doesn't work at all.

Luckily I bought from Dick Smith which let me return it no questions asked. I wouldn't recommend this particular model because if its tiny, tinny sounding speaker but the easy return policy is the reason I'm +ve'ing this deal.

    • +3

Easy return policy was scrapped a long time back. Now have just manager's whim or consumer legislation.

      • @bruce- Oh really? In that case I revoke my +ve

        • Was part of the revamping/rebadging of DS from DSE last year. Involved new marketing company (same as Big W) & change in policies like 14 day no questions return. (apparently many people were returning used/unsalable product & no one wanted to buy used stock)

But you are correct about how fickle DAB+ receivers can be - the 'digital cliff' of good signal or nothing. You need to put the DAB+ antenna up unlike a simple old AM tranny - which used a 'bar' coil antenna which meant rotating the radio for best reception. But the static & poor audio quality!

Have found other DAB+ portable models had far too low volume at maximum (useless unless in a very quiet room). Also they chew through the batteries. DS reviewer said batteries quickly went flat on standby with this model. So you usually need to use the included plug-pack.

        • +1

There was an article in the papers that mentioned how DSE would suddenly sell a LOT of TVs the week before a big game, then get lots of returns the week after.

Sigh, people who do that spoil it for everyone else.

    • I have a Sangean dpr69 and couldn't be happier. I don't even have to extend the antenna anywhere in the house. Sound is brilliant compared to my old radio (which wasn't cheap at $200). You check it out for yourselves and not necessarily listen to one unhappy user.

      • +1

@abacus I don't know if you're referring to me, but I'm not unhappy. I like the quality of digital radio- It's pristine, and the clarity is astounding. I also use digital at home in my living room.
I'm just pointing out it doesn't work in some areas of buildings, so make sure you can get good enough reception.

  • +3

Excellent. Hopefully this will improve my reception of Alan Jones' breakfast show.

    • -5

      Gillard/labour sledging FTW.

    • +9

One of those rare occasions where things get worse with better reception.

      • whoever voted neg to this FN quote I don't think your father would be very proud of you.

  • Does this come with an ac adapter?

    • yeah i think it does, in the reviews someone mentions an AC adaptor. one reviewer says it doesn't last as long on batteries though

      • Does anyone know if it comes with a car charger?

    • Sorry but I think Alan Jones is DC.
[which option I support 100%… unlike Jones himself]

It's an ok unit, the build quality isn't fantastic, and the LCD scrolling display is on the slower side.

  • Expensive visit to DSE - went in to collect this radio and ended up buying a LG 3D Blu-ray system. Apparently 1/2 price at $249. Not listed on their website so probably older model but is this model http://www.secondsworld.spiffystores.com/products/hb806tgw

I personally restrict impulse buys to chocolate.

I bought one of these a while back. It works fine with headphones, and is a bargain at that price. DAB+ is worth it just for triple J Unearthed, but there are heaps of other digital-only stations which make station-surfing to suit your mood far more satisfying.

  • This TDK iPhone dock with DAB+ tuner is also a good buy at $39

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/C5984/tdk-dab-alarm-clock-do…

  • +1

Got the display model off DSE Indooroopilly today. The speakers is rubbish, as expected…

Reception is fine where I am, locks on to every station.

  • +1

Thanks ezarc for sharing. I got one…had to drive 20Km to get one but I am happy with it. Cool to go to the Cricket (SA is coming in December) and when I go fishing or camping. It still has FM too so even outside of coverage, should be OK.

My house is a bunker and normal FM is very shabby to get a good signal. DAB+ has had no problems.

For twenty buck, nice bargain. Pity, saw a lable on the SHelf Bush DAB+ Alarm Clock - $ 5.95 (Save $35) - this was at DSE Willaim Street Perth :-) Of course they were all gone!

    • My house is a bunker…

Like, in preparation for the apocalypse?

  • Id get it for Koffee FM - and that its easy to use in house (ie: low tech) - good for grand parents…

  • Thank you for the deal information. I purchased one for each family member

  • I picked mine up today. Pretty clunky awkward controls and display, but sound (plugged through the headphone cable into my stereo) is fine.

    • PS Anyone looking for a better quality system (dab, inc ipod dock, wifi, internet radio etc), I bought this deal for my bedrooom a couple of weeks back and have been super pleased with it:

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79492

  • I don't need a digital radio as my ISP offers all the local digital radio stations and more quota free (iiNet and Internode). Was browsing instore and asked if there were any left. Was offered the store demo for $15 which is all they had left at DS. Didn't take it as it wasn't in good condition.

    • You must have long ethernet cables or very strong wifi.

  • Got mine. NovaNation without smashing my 3G 1gig downloads on my iPhone. Awesome.

  • Looks like 'all over red rover' ,DSE website price now , $45 !!!!

    • Does green rover still have it for $19?
