Shame about the 60hz but still really good for the price

  • If they still have stock when my credit card arrives, I'm getting one to meet my $1500 card spend quota.

  • isn't black friday on the 24th? why are they 2 weeks early?

    • +3

the economy is sooo good they have to get people spending early

    • +12

On Black Friday they have to compete with all the Black Friday deals.
If they get you into buying now they don't have to compete with anyone

    • +1

They all start early these days. JB starts Sunday night and runs throughout the whole week with extended trading hours.

  • +7

    16GB Soldered LPDDR5-6400, dual-channel, not upgradable
    perfect if not soldered

    • +9

I’d guess most people looking for a sub $1000 laptop wouldn’t require more than 16GB memory

    • +1

Low power DDR5 pretty much only comes as soldered or via special kits from Samsung or Dell.

DDR5 has a pretty complicated electrical interface. Low power has lower voltage and less headroom for transmission losses.

    • This was perfect if it was 32gb (even as an upgrade), I use Lightroom / PS and 16gb is on the lower side if you have large files.

    • Unfortunately it seems non soldered tops out at 5600 though, so for better iGPU performance this is the go.

  • How is the keys? Are they soft? Tempted to get for my high school son. Is there any retailer we can see this at?

  • Nice.

  • -4

    no backlit keys

    • +6

      Backlit, English keyboard

  • hows the battery on this?

    • +4

      Larger than average 61Wh battery

      • +4

omg thank you so much! its almost like I cant read! <3

        • +5

          Thought you missed…

    • anyone who had this can comment on the battery life of this unit?

  • +1

How does the keyboard on these compare with the ThinkPad line?

  • +4

Looks very reasonable with this spec on this price.

  • no OLED

    • +5

good right? Don't want an oled laptop, possible burn in and battery drain

    • +1

      beggars cant be choosers

      • -1

seating can't have poo bars dripping!

        • An LCD display is equivalent to "seating with dripping poo bars"…

  • GGs my good sir. GGs.

  • +2

if only it had the trackpoint and the buttons at the top of the mousepad…

  • Any further discounts by buying through the Lenovo Education Store? I don't have a .edu.au email address to use for signup but could hassle a friend if needed.

    • That model number not discounted on ed store. Price is $1934.09

      • Thanks for checking @whorishmouth. Appreciate it!

        • +2

I lied, it is discounted by 10% from $2148.99 lol

  • +3

If this was a Thinkpad I'd be all over it. I buy Lenovo's for the Trackpoint.

  • +1

    Surely this isn't a two-grand laptop?

    • +1

Lenovo are very generous with themselves on their RRP. :)
I'm typing on a Thinkpad P14s I bought earlier this year. RRP (from order summary) $3952.94. I paid $1299 with a coupon code listed here.
(and the bargain-brag - I got about $155 cashrewards, and $230 in lenovo rewards).

I don't know what laptops are worth generally, but I think your starting point for a reasonable cost of anything from Lenovo is to drop at least 50% from their RRP.

  • +1

    Any good thinkpad deals?

    Looking for a 13 incher

    • +1

      Looking for a 13 incher

      That's what she said

      • -2

username checks out for this comment

    • Looking for >40cm (compatible with backpack), as anything smaller looks ridiculous next to my 2x 69cm & 81cm 4K screens.
The size matters. Carry it once & use it all the time :)

  • +2

    Thanks OP, ordered
hopefully get 3.3% cashrewards allocated too as its a normal promo code

This will replace my old 8th gen Dell that i use for photo editing/submission on the sidelines of sporting events
The dim screen and lack of grunt for anything AI photo related was a pain last season.

    • How does the 300 nits screen compare to your old Dell laptop?

I'm tempted to pick this up for a little bit of photo editing whilst at work (bit down downtime) but I'm worried 300 nits isn't bright enough.

      • will see when it arrives, the old dell was supposed to be 300 but i read reports of it tested at ~277.
Its quite low contrast too so i expect it will be an improvement anyway.

I use my laptop in a hooded enclosure when outside anyway

  • Argh if it was a touch screen I’d be all over it

    • -7

Who uses a touchscreen on a laptop?!

      • +14

        @Ayanami

      • +1

I just bought a new non-touchscreen laptop and I've been trying to use it like an iPad

        • +1

That’s a coincidence… I’ve just bought a new iPad and I’ve been trying to use it like a laptop

  • What else is good and cheap for a kid going into year 7 next year?

  • Is this touch screen ?

  • Thoughts on this vs Thinkpad series pls

    • +1

This looks better than the Thinkpad but not sure about the performance…

  • Good writeup, OP!

  • Hoping CR come to the party and increase their cashback!

  • +1

can also confirm cashrewards has tracked for another $29 off this

  • +4

1 day too late!! There was 16% cashrewards back yesterday!!!

  • -1

Since when is a 14" screen and soldered RAM not a compromise?

    • +1

      So you like them big?

      • I just bought a 17.3" laptop

        • Which one?

            • @linkindan: 2.6kg. that's a hefty beast! I guess that's your compromise. ;)
still not as heavy as my first laptop that I lugged to university everyday 30 years ago, which came in at about 3kg.

Each has their own use-case. I use a 14" laptop with 11" ipad air as second screen, 5 days a week, 8-12 hours a day. perfectly happy with my setup!

              • @braddsey: My last laptop, which I only upgraded cause of USB issues, was just over 3kg - thicker, made of plastic, and every spec was less than my new one (except weight aha)

I’m mostly using this as a desktop, but I need a laptop for work, holiday and hotspot reasons, so the weight isn’t disastrous for me

How do you find the iPad Air? I’m on an 8th Gen and planning an upgrade, but other than “absolutely not a Mini or Pro” I can’t make a decision

                • @linkindan: iPad Air - honestly, I totally underutilise it. I use it mostly a second monitor, with occasional use for media consumption, and a fallback option for getting into my company O365 tools. I don't use the apple pencil or anything like that, and don't use split screen etc (though picture in picture is great, a shame kayo doesn't work with picture in picture!).

iPad Air 5 / iPad 10th Gen are so close to the same it doesn't matter - i just found a good deal for iPad Air at the time and the price difference down to the iPad 10th Gen was so small it made nearly no difference to get the iPad Air instead.

  • Just jacked up the price to $1,129.00 by the looks of it. Was in checkout too.

    • :-(

    • +1

Use the Online Chat and see if the rep will honour the deal price before it was jacked mid-checkout

      • +1

Online chat should help - i've bought a few accessories via online chat, they typically match a previous offer price. if they don't, tell them you'll walk away!

        • +1

Thanks for the heads up, I've just tried live chat now.

Kruthik repeatedly said best he could do was $1129 but that he would add a mouse for $1. Then when I said I wasn't buying he said he'd check with his manager and email me if they can do cheaper. Not expecting anything good but I guess we will see.

        • +1

No luck. They said it was a price error.

  • +1

    Same PatD, damn

  • -4

gone in 60 seconds no wonder interest rates must go up everybody is so desperate to spend. this amount could be rent for 1 week for a 1 bedder in most areas in Sydney, But we chose this over the other discretionary spending of rent.

    • +4

Must buy shiny black box to fill existential dread

  • the included 16% cashback yesterday brought it down to $750

  • was tempting, but not tempting enough. expired as I was tinkering with different options in cart

    good riddance.

BTW a 16p option with RTX 3060 is around $1200 if not expired along with it

    • yup those RTX 3060 ThinkBook 16p options also went up in price. that didn't last long

  • Can 12CU RDNA2 Radeon 680M iGPU handle Warzone 2?

    • I personally never trust SB cashback apart from their gift card sale.

      • You should trust my maths even less! I stuffed up the discount. Unpublished my original comment. Corrected:

Despite the price increase to $1129, the deal can be matched today via Shopback cashback and better if you use Westpac. Although for many cashback isn't as good as a proper upfront discount. Makes for a better tax deduction though!

        Price after 20% cashback: $923
Price with bonus Westpac 15%: $773

        • Gambling if cashback is rejected you would pay $1129, previously SB rejected too many cb like amaysim or Menulog

          • @rartelif: If you use Westpac and follow the correct steps to purchase, the chance of getting the rebate is very high.

  • +3

Mine shipped from this bargain today

    • +1

      Excellent - enjoy the laptop

    • +1

      Mine did too
