Great system, bought one with 8GB for a little bit cheaper in Jul from eBay (with a 22% off plus voucher). Mine only has 3x DP (and no HDMI etc.).

  • Does the USB C port support displayport for 3x monitors or just data transfer only

    • +1

There are only 2x display ports onboard. USB-C is only for data. No display possible

      • Is the one for $253.80 - the same?

        • +2

Yes, usb-c display on a desktop is quite rare

    • -1

you will need at least a G5 or above if you need usb-c alt mode.

  • Okay, techphobe here with a quick question. We have 2 monitors and are looking for a PC to use at home, will be used for basic word, excel, watching YT, small amount of photoshop, Son may play some games (think Fall Guys). How would this PC fit our situation?

    Thanks

    • +3

It should be ok for your needs. I think it might struggle with your son gaming requirement, but you can always update the graphics card if you want.

    • if youre a technophobe - try to find a desktop PC with a graphics card already installed like this one https://www.untech.com.au/products/hp-z2-g4-tower-i7-8700-32…

OR buy this mini PC then go to a local computer store and ask them to install a low profile graphics card like the GTX 1650 mini

      • It only fits single slot low profiles - I found out the hard way :|

apart from that, it's great :)

      • Probably easier to buy one with the graphics card already installed like you say. So these PC's are pre-installed with Windows 11, do I have to pay a yearly fee for that and does it upgrade for a number of years?

        • +2

These PC's have license embedded. Unless Microsoft starts charging for new versions. It's for lifetime

      • +1

WHAT, why would you suggest buying a 5-6 year gaming desktop when they can buy this new for $40 more?????
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/794662

        • -1

          Dont you mean $400 more?

        • -1

i just shared whatever i found on their website

    • You'd just have to make sure your monitors have display port. Cheaper monitors usually just have HDMI/DVI ports.

      • +1

Just make sure you go ebay and get an under $10 DP to DVI cable.

  • +1

    any good for hackintosh?

    • +1

      Should be fine

    • 🤔 interesting, didn't think to try that on one of these rig

  • -1

Was looking for a machine for proxmox or unraid. However, I really haven't had a good run with HP systems and really want a NUC size machine

    • +2

I have one of these just to play around with proxmox, truenas etc and works great. Also got the equivalent Dell and not much between both.

      • I wouldn't mind given it a shot. I know their business series are miles better then HP consumer grade products. However, after dealing with eight Aruba switch failures in a span of six weeks, I'm a bit put off HP…but that just me.

  • Will this run a 34" monitor for office documents?

    • +3

      Easily

    • +4

Size of the monitor means nothing. It’s the resolution that’s relevant.

  • +1

Hi OP, would this particular version of the Elitedesk be able to take a 3.5 HDD alongside the SSD?

    • +1

Yes, possibly you can install 2 x 3.5" HDD

      • +2

        It can fit 2x 3.5" and a 2.5". Has 3 sata ports.
Also comes with 2 NVMe slots.

      • Hey OP, when will these be shipped? Haven't received any notifications, has been 3 days since purchase.

    • Just be aware that the SATA power cable from the motherboard is proprietary, it’s not the standard SATA power cable direct from the power supply like you’d expect from a standard system.

Get it in writing from the seller that the one you’re buying has the correct cables included. I didn’t check this and mine didn’t arrive with one (not from this particular seller - from ACT) and I had to resort to buying one from eBay elsewhere.

  • We have these at work on rolling three year leasing cycles. They always seem to s**t themselves about 2.5 years in and start massively slowing down. Never figured out what it is that causes it but I'd never buy one for home use.

    • +3

Thermal paste breakdown issue perhaps resulting in throttling?

      • Possibly? We don't do anything intense with them, it's purely office stuff. Never had the same problem with Dells though.

        • Purely office stuff to me equates to device powered on 24/7 with little to no reboots (maybe when they're forced to reboot due to uptime causing issues).

    • +1

I've had 5 over the last decade, they are all still going strong, some where old dev PCs and now media servers that are always on.

  • Why do all these come with win11 instead of 10? :(

    • Because MS stopped selling W10 licences earlier this year directly (retailers can still sell them if they have the spare keys/licences on hand).

    • +1

I believe you can just install Windows 10 and it should activate

    • +1

Because Windows 10 reaches its end of life in Oct 2025.
Why would anyone want to buy a PC that only has two years of life left ?

      • +1

Because windows 11 is a memory hog, and windows 10 doesn't just magically stop working at end of support.

  • What's idle power consumption at wall?

    • very low maybe around 50w…..

      • +3

You can do 10-12W with the USFF so I think 50W is considered high usage. At 24/7 it’s about $88 per year cheaper at 25c per kilowatt hour, therefore I think the better buy is the USFF.

Speaking of which the USFF Optiplex with same specs is $210 on eBay.

        • The dells are built Iike tanks too.

      • +4

Where are you getting that figure from? I would expect "basic" systems like these to idle around 20W.

        • including monitors etc etc. at most 50 watts.

      • In what decade is 50W considered low?

I'd have expected around half that.

        • Likely they’re including a monitor that’s powered on and idle at desktop with that estimate.

These SFF units idle between 15-20W. The USFF version idles around 7-12W.

          • +2

@skittlebrau: For this particular model (HP EliteDesk 800 G4), the datasheet says the mini (USFF?) and the SFF draw about the same idle power, about 12W (although dunno how accurate / real world HP's measurement is). I know this usually isn't the case though, for HP's other models (the 400 and 600), the mini usually draws about half of the SFF, according to the datasheet.

HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Quickspecs: https://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c06040430.pdf (search for idle)

            • @drojf: Actually you’re right, they should idle similarly. There isn’t enough components onboard the SFF version for it to make more than a couple watts difference over the USFF version.

  • +1

Thinking of grabbing one for Plex server and running all the Arr apps. Is there a reason why the Dell Optiplex seem more popular than these?

    • +5

Go USFF. Smaller, quieter, less power and same price or cheaper.

      • +1

SFF makes for a better Plex server as you can fit multiple 3.5 inch drives.

        • My single 5TB 2.5" is still far from full, and Netflix pales to my library.
Do you really want multiple internal drives?
          (Keeping raw blu-ray rips?)

          • +2

@bargaino: ‘Netflix pales to my library’
Surely that’s a joke? What do you watch things in 480p?

            • @Yekul: OK, I googled, and apparently Netflix has 3800 movies, which does come as a shock to me. It felt like a lot less, when I went looking.
Is there a way to get a list?
I have less than 1000, but due to an obvious bias, higher quality.

          • @bargaino: Cool story, I have 3x 3.5 inch drives in mine.

        • I'd only go SFF if you are planning on running something like external SAS.

      • USFF won't take graphics card or hard drives - it's not a viable alternative if you need these things.

    • I’ve had very good experiences with the Dell units so have continued buying them. Recently upgraded my Plex server for the third time to an Optiplex with an i7 8700.

    • Dell better built. Hpe have been jerks in pay walling server software updates, but not sure around desktop.

  • Im tossing up between this and building a low cost (thing 5700G and 16gb of RAM) PC for my parents to use as their current system (also a refurb Dell running an i5-4770 is now running like molasses even though I swapped their drive at the time from a mech to a SSD).

Obviously diff price points but not sure if its worth spending the extra now and get them something that will last but also can be repaired easily if a component fails..

    • +1

IMO you’d be better with an ex-corp unit (my preference is the Dell ones), they’re dependable, cheap and you can easily swap them out for a “new used” one when you want to upgrade.

My current Windows 10 install has been running for over 5 years across three different chassis, simply moved the NVMe drive from one to the next when I upgraded.

  • How's HP and Lenovo's business line up comparing to Dell Optiplex?

Bought a Dell from this deal, later added another 8GB RAM, it has been rock solid.

My parents saw it and they are super keen to upgrade their big metal boxes (as they call them), so I'm looking out a deal for them.

One has I5 3550 (11 year old), another i3 6100 (7 years old), so an 8th gen or later setup would be a decent upgrade for them.

  • One stick of 16 GB or 2 sticks of 8 GB?

How much is extra ram (say 32 or 64 GB); or no ram?

  • Can this fit a low profile GTX 1650?

  • Can I make this into a decent 1440p gaming machine with an upgraded gpu?

If so: What gpu can I put

    • +2

It's nearly 6 years old, and low profile video cards are limited and expensive.

They're not good value for your $$$ for gaming - buy one of the Techfast machines instead - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/Techfast%20sort%3Ac… - they're six years newer (so they'll last six years longer…) and the basic models start from just a few hundred more.

    • +2

RX 6400 - once you see how much a single slot low profile version of these cost you'll get a new machine :)

      • +1

Agree, was thinking this is bargain SFF gaming PC, until checking prices in AUD for single slot PCI powered GPUs A2000 and 1650's….. entire new PC and not SFF is way to go bang for buck.

  • Any Dell at similar price?

  • Would this be enough for a media player?

    • +1

      Yes, and a media server.

    • +1

There’s better options out there depending on your needs if media playing is the primary use case.

      • Thanks, I'll look around some more.

  • As some others, I’d be keen for a Dell equivalent if possible 👍

  • Looking for a pc that can run a 4K monitor at 2160p resolution as my current dell 9020 can’t do it. Will this one or the dell 7050 do it?

    • +1

The CPU in this is the same as Dell 7060, this system has intel Graphics 630 but no HDMI. If your monitor has DP it should work.

  • What is the comparable Dell model -with x3 SATA ports that would fit 2x 3.5" and a 2.5" and
    x2 NVMe?

  • What cpu/ gpu would be best suited to playing 4k on my tv? Or better question, which ones shouldn't I look at…?

  • Can you fit 2x 3.5" HDD drives in it? and would be the maximum capacity (TB) you can install that supports by this? Thanks

    • +1

Yes to the first, check this video.
Second, not too sure, but I don't think there would be a restriction. What capacity are you planning?
Edit: I just found this, but unsure if that's the maximum capacity

  • thanks, purchased.

  • Received in the mail today, but only has 8gb ram (2x4gb sticks). Have sent an email to customer service. Other than that clean machine inside and out, good price.
