Epson Ecotank ET-4850 4 Colour Multifunction Printer $249 in-Store Only + Surcharge @ Centre Com

543

Good day everyone. Sorry if I make any mistake, this is my first post.

I have been looking for an Epson Ecotank printer series to replace my old printer at home for a while. Couldn’t pull a trigger at the price is still somewhere high.

However this morning after some searching, I found out the Epson ecotank ET-4850 is only $249 at Centrecom. I don’t know if this is a price error or not, but I believe this is incredible low. Price elsewhere range $5xx-$6xx

Anyways I successfully grabbed one instantly and just picked it up at Maribyrnong warehouse.
Good luck everyone 🤞🤞

Surcharges: 1.2% Card & PayPal, 2% AmEx.

Not the same printer but the last printer I got was advertised as black and white, but only printed black so I had to return it.

    • Well done Sir!
      You made me chuckle ;D

  • For some reason i can't get onto the Centrecom web site. The web browser is stating that the server is not found. Has the server been Ozbargained or some thing. Or maybe just down for maintenance.

    • Just visited and bought one myself, was fine for me.

      • +1

Damn. The Aussie Broadband DNS server must be playing up.

        • I was getting the same problem over last hour, otherwise i already posted the deal an hour ago.

          • @jasonnguyenaus: Yeah. Fancy that it just started working again. Either the Centrecom web site is sporadically playing up or there's a DNS issue.

        • Try on your phone 😉

  • Excellent deal, been waiting on one for an EcoTank with duplex printing, thanks OP!

  • +2

If this is any thing like the ET-4800 model which i have well this will be good. The ink lasts forever if you don't use it continually and the ink is cheap. I mean only about $20 per ink bottle for thousands of pages each colour.

  • All gone, that was a steal at 249

  • What a steal.

  • Great pricing. Cheap to run printer. This is at the low end of what they go for refurbished.

  • -2

Is this a ink or laser printer?
I got a high end epson ink printer for free about a year ago.
So this price only makes sense if it's laser.

    • It's a fancy ink printer.

      • What's makes it fancy

        • -1

You buy ink instead of cartridges and fill it up yourself. Apparently saves the planet or something.

          • @Dollar Dreamer:

Apparently saves the planet or something.

            It saves your wallet

The ink is like 100 times cheaper compared to cartridges.

        • +2

Because it holds a crap load of ink in the printer itself instead of using ink cartridges.

Only problem i have with my Epson ET-4800 printer (ET-4850 is basically just an updated version with a larger black ink tank). Is that after a while that one of the print heads gets clogged with ink. So i've got to run the print head clean feature to get it right again. That's the problem with an ink printer.

          • @hollykryten:

So i've got to run the print head clean feature to get it right again

            Why is that a problem?

            • @jv: I guess that it's because it uses ink to perform the clean. But i guess since there's heaps of it. But still it uses ink.

              • @hollykryten: Yeah, you might use 10 cents of ink each time…

I bought an ET5150 a few months back and have never had to a nozzle clean. Everytime I've done a test, it's been spot on.

I previously had an ET2750 for many years and probably needed to do a nozzle clean every few months.
Once again, it was only a few cents of ink and took about two minutes… No big deal.

                • @jv: I've got the ET-4800 model and i've had to do a nozzle clean a few times since i've had it. I guess they might have improved that with the ET-5150 model.

But i guess if you leave the printer unused for some time it might tend to get an ink head clot.

          • @hollykryten: For Inkjet printers….the clogging issue happens if you don't use the printer very often. If you use it twice a week using colour, you won't have the clogging issue so that is why I still recommend a Laser Colour to people who don't print often and want a setup that is set and forget for 5 years. Inkjet there is some fiddling around, calibration of print heads, cleaning, refilling tanks, all of this is a bit of a faff, not an issue if you are tech savvy but for oldies, go Laser and buy 3rd part toners on eBay..

How good is a Laser Colour at printing photos?

  • +1

I am using this printer and I can say it is so expensive

    • How come At full price?

  • Damn Why didn't I check earlier?

  • This really cheap for an ink tank printer.

  • Is this majorly different from ET-4800? It's at least 150 bucks cheaper because ET-4850 costs 550 at least even at the cheapest store right now.

    • +1

Going by the looks that i believe that the black ink tank is larger. That's the only major difference that i can tell.

      • Sounds good. Doesn't seem like a big difference at all.

    • Yep, difference is the ET-4850 has a duplexer and the ET-4800 you need to flip the pages manually to print double sided.

      • +1

What so it has automatic 2 sided paper printing?. I wish the ET-4800 model had that.

You lot got such a good bargain at $249.

      • +1

No duplex printing for the price of the ET-4800 is a ripoff!

All we are paying for, is the luxury of a printer that doesn't lock us into killing the earth with landfills full of half used cartridges.

  • +2

Great deal, this one has duplexer.
Don’t forget to register your warranty using the promotional URL and you get an extra year.
    https://www.clubepson.com.au/competitions/data/#rego3

    • and you get an extra year.

and a $40 voucher to use at the Epson store.

  • +1

I have a different ecotank model and can confirm the ink lasts for ages and is buttloads cheaper than cartridges

  • +1

Duplex scanning is missing on these.
My WF 3540 has duplex scanning which is removed from these $600+ printers.

    • -2

      it does duplex scanning

      • It comes with document feeder but no duplex scanning.

  • Does anyone know if the ET-4850 or ET-4800 do borderless A4 printing? It appears to do borderless 4" x 6" photos and borderless A4 scanning but I can't seem to find any reference to A4 borderless printing

  • I get that the ink tanks are big and ink is cheap, but this printer costs twice (at RRP) some of Ozbargain favourites like he Brother laser multifunctionals, and is the ink really cheaper than laser prices are anyway? The only reason I can think for getting one is if you do a lot of photo printing, but only if you are printing large photos since it's cheaper to print 6x4 and probably 5x7 at the shops. Pretty narrow use case IMO. Not to mention that lasers have much better reliability than these ink jets typically, which require spraying stuff through microscopic holes that often get blocked

Then of course there's the second hand market of which you cna pick up printers for next to nothing with ink/toner

    • Colour printing, which the Brothers don't do.

You don't print photos with the ecotanks, they only have 3 coloured inks. But they are still better than mono. Especially if you have kids in school who need to print constantly.

And yes, the ink is dirt cheap.

I've owned multiple types (photo ecotanks, normal ecotanks, brother laser)

      • Brother does make colour laser printers

        • +1

I ran the numbers several months ago, and the per page costs are about 4x for colour laser, but both are still very cheap.

          • @rumblytangara: Interesting but critical to know compared to which printer as they vary wildly, and then aftermarket cartridges should be considered also

            • +2

@Jackson: Ecotanks that use the T522 refils, and whatever the generic base level colour Brother laser with duplex is.

I have no interest in chasing and evaluating non-branded consumables- to me, both options are cheap enough to run that it doesn't really matter.

If you want to go ahead and run the numbers on various permutations of printer model and 3rd party consumable, the arithmetic is simple- go for it ;)

              • -1

@rumblytangara: Fair enough, but to illustrate a point, my fuji xerox genuine toner in about 70 bucks genuine, and about 7.50 (3000 pages) after market. The after market one so far has been working fine for me. I don't print that much so over the last few years I've only had to buy 1

      • You don't print photos with the ecotanks

I do, the pictures are great… Mine uses the pigment inks.

        • Let me put it this way. You don't print photos with the CMYK four colour ecotanks, cause they are shit for photos. Pigment inks or whatever don't make the difference, there's simply a limit to how much fidelity you're going to get with 3 subtractive primary colours+black.

I've used the six colour ecotanks and using photo paper, they were pretty good. Totally acceptable for casual home printing. Not as good as professional lambda prints, but then again I never went off the deep end tuning the printer and experimenting with all photo papers. I simply assumed that my buggering about with a home photo printer with half arsed colour calibration tools wasn't going to get the same results as a photo lab that did fine art output for galleries. Which is what I would call great.

          • @rumblytangara:

You don't print photos with the CMYK four colour ecotanks, cause they are shit for photos.

I print lots of photos with it and they are great…

Even my previous ecotank with dye inks printed really good photos.

            • +2

@jv: Again, we have very different ideas of what "great" is.

If you're happy with what you have (especially if it's CMYK) then more power to you.

    • Well. The black ink bottle is good for 7,500 pages (black bottle is about $30 at Officeworks). And the three colour ink bottles is good for 6,000 pages each (about $15 each per colour bottles). So i think that the maintenance cost of this printer is extremely cheap even compared to a colour laser printer.

      • OK that is cheap, I will give it that, especially for genuine ink (if those prices are for genuine). I probably get similar pricing with some lasers printers by buying aftermarket toners.

        • Yes it's genuine Epson ink bottles. Cheap yeah.

Apparently according to the consumables page it takes genuine Epson T502 ink bottles.

          https://www.epson.com.au/products/ecotank/ET-4850_Consumable…

These are prices at Officeworks. But you can buy the bottles also at other retailers.

@hollykryten: I guess my point is that aside from this few minute window where you could get one for 249, you are paying for it up front at the RRP. I am the first to complain about the state of the printer market, but 600 bucks for an ink jet printer sounds pretty insane. OK maybe it's better than you cheap hp or Canon give away, but it's quite a bit more expensive than other printers with continuous ink setups

            • +1

@Jackson: You pay more for the printer itself but also you get a much higher quality printer compared to say the cheapy $50 ones which will last way longer. Made to last. The cheap printers are nothing but landfill. These however are not.

And also the operational costs of these Ecotank printers are much lower than the cheap printers where you pay a small fortune for tiny sized ink cartridges. Trust me with the cheap ink printers you pay lots more in operational costs compared to one of these Ecotank ink printers even at the RRP price.

But lets not also forget that in the package of the Ecotank printers comes with a full set of fully filled ink bottles the same as you get at retailers. You don't get partially filled starter ink crap with these.

            • +1

but 600 bucks for an ink jet printer sounds pretty insane.

Have to tried to make one yourself?

    • but this printer costs twice (at RRP) some of Ozbargain favourites like he Brother laser multifunctionals,

Mine paid for itself in < 2 years due to high cost of cartridges.

      • How much are you printing and what? Most people consume on a tablet these day, so when I factor that in I don't print that much

        • About a ream a month… between 4 people.

Cartridges (genuine) would cost $100's per year.

  • I missed out. Did these get honoured or cancelled?

    • +1

It should be ok as i saw that it was part of their XMAS in July sale. Which only just ended yesterday. The price was by no mistake.

      • They emailed me saying it was a pricing error.

    • Mine was honoured therefore I made this post. Not sure how other people going.

    • Still available in Frankston and Bendigo for in store collection. I live pretty far from both but gonna see if they can post it or i can get UBER to collect it and deliver it for me.

    • Not honoured.

  • I just got one, but gotta go to Frankston to get it. Do they accept an UBER driver to collect and deliver to me? Anyone know?

I wonder if they can post it for me?

    • gotta go to Frankston to get it. Do they accept an UBER driver

Huh ? Why would you pay for an Uber pickup from Frankston instead of just going to Frankston yourself and collect it ?

      • its over an hr drive one way for me!

        • I must be missing something here 😁 If it's over an hour for you to drive, then it's going to be over an hour for the Uber too… that Uber is going to cost like half the price of the printer isn't it ?!

          • @Nom: Nah $55 not that bad

            • @Inthemix: Surge pricing… The Uber driver will charge $555

              • +1

@jv: All good, they are able to transfer it to a store close to me, win win!

  • Bugger, they have just emailed me saying pricing was incorrect and will not honor the price. Refund now pending :(

    • Sounds like BS from them to be about incorrect price. As i swear i saw a notice on the product web page on the day saying that it was on the XMAS in July sale. That person has basically just deprived a great deal off you from the recent XMAS in July sale. It was a limited time deal.

Going by comments here there's been multiple peoples have had their orders honoured no worries at all.

    • Don't believe that, dispute the transaction to get your money back.

Very dodgy, mine was already in transit with Australia Post, but they've just done a redirect back to their warehouse.

    • Goods not received.

    • Same, despite no email from them, and now I’m out of pocket for delivery on JBHifi ink bottles.

Really poor form for how they’ve gone about it.

Whilst I understand mistakes happen and am not one to ever try to exploit a pricing error, I go question the legality of taking back goods sold and shipped.

      • +1

You could probably take action against them to recover your losses, in this circumstance.

      • That's unfortunate. btw why did you buy ink already, doesn't it comes with about 10000 pages worth of ink?

        • +1

Less for colour, but it was 40% off, and I figured I could let the kids run wild with whatever they wanted to print.

      • +1

Same. Lucky I bought from Amazon and they're not charging me return shipping fees.

    • +1

I thought if the item was already dispatched to you in the hands of the courier that the deal is done and dusted. That they had already accepted the sale. How can they do that. I can't see how that's legal. That would deem that the sale was accepted by the seller if they had already sent the goods off to you through the courier.

That's like some one selling on ebay. Packing up and goods and sending the goods off to the buyer. Then later deciding that they didn't like the sale price and asks for courier to send it back to them. I'm sure they've broken the consumer law.

Companies like this shouldn't get away with pulling these sort of stunts. It has to be against the consumer law sale contract. They literally accepted their side of the sale when they processed the order, took the money and then not only that they sent the goods off to you with your postal address on it in the hands of the courier. That's accepting the sale. They can't just pull this stunt days later.

Well it sounds like Centre Com is now on my list of companies to avoid purchasing from.

      • +1

Yeah pretty sure they've broken the contract law.

The fact that they would do that, rather than accept an insignificant loss on the sale, speaks volume about the character of this mob.

  • The fact that they haven’t communicated with anyone they’ve done this to (but have with those who hadn’t had theirs shipped yet) indicates to me that they know they’re doing the the wrong thing.

    • +1

I bet you we're going to get an email saying your return has been received and your refund is coming, to make it look like we initiated the return.

      • +1

Well it just goes to show according to this company they deem according to them that you don't own the goods until it's been delivered into your hands. Not when it's been addressed and handed over to the courier with the item actually picked up by the courier. It must be dodgy as legally.

But i thought the ownership of the goods is when the sale has been processed, money sale price accepted by the money taken, physically processing the order, boxed up and it handed over to the courier, physically in the hands of the courier on the way to the buyer. They would have physically processed the order by person before shipping the goods off. That is a contract of sale formed. They actually accepted the sale by doing so. It's legally binding. This company broke consumer law. But what do i know right as i'm no lawyer.

As i said as a seller can't just ship goods off to a buyer and then days later the seller decides they want to back out of it and want the goods back. A sale contract had already been formed. Too bad for the seller they accepted the sale before shipping the goods off. To do what they did is a clear breach of consumer law.

They needed to rectify a pricing error before processing the order and sending if off by cancelling the order before physically processing it. Once they processed the order and handed over to the courier with it being picked up it's legally yours then. Contract of sale was formed. Trying to back out of that is a breach of the law. Companies like this pulling these blatant illegal stunts should be reported to Consumer Affairs.

Why does the stock management on Centre Com's website suck so badly?

I was buying some stuff in-store the other day and asked them about why they keep cancelling orders. Found out their back-end is complete garbage.
It's possible for there to be, lets say 5 in stock, and it would allow infinite amount of online orders to go through because it doesn't update in real-time, or fast enough.
It's actually best if you go in-store to buy it because, and I suspect, it's possible for you to buy and receive the card in-person ahead of an online order that was placed first

    What's wrong with Centre Com?

Bottom of every page: "Centre Com reserves the right to not make a loss"
Translation 1: "If we fark up the price, we will not honour the price, hold your money and then stuff around before refunding it"
Translation 2: "Our stock availability is unreliable. When we don't have it in stock for the special price, we will gladly sell it to you one day later for a higher price"

    • Back end system isn’t much of an excuse for their behaviour here where they have taken people’s money, shipped them the goods and then sneakily recalled the packages! In this instance they clearly had the stock.

Has anyone heard from them or had their money refunded?

Thanks for the links to other issues with them @ChatGPT. Perhaps useful for a complaint to the ACCC or fair trading?
