Xiaomi tablets with genuine Chinese ROMs can be hard to find and here's one on sale from Banggood. While not quite as cheap as the last AliExpress deal it's still a good price for a high end Android tablet packed with features. Out of the box it's supports Widevine L1 DRM for Netflix, Prime and Disney+ in FHD and finally video out via the USB-C port.

Featuring an 11" 2880x1800 IPS 144Hz display with 550nit brightness, HDR10, DCI-P3, Dolby Vision & Gorilla Glass 3, MIUI 14 (Android 13), 8GB LPDDR5 RAM, 128GB UFS 3.1 storage, the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 CPU with an Adreno 730 GPU, 8600mAh battery with 67W USB-PD / QC4+ fast charge, 50MP + 2MP rear camera, 20MP front camera, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and 4 speakers/microphones with Hi-Res Audio and Dolby Atmos.

Techtablets has covered this tablet in depth. The main downsides are no GPS, microSD card support or 3.5mm audio jack. As with all Xiaomi Chinese ROM devices you can get the Google Play Store installed from the Mi app store.

  • is this better than Samsung s8?

    • +4

They're pretty similar. Xiaomi gives you a better CPU, larger battery, faster charging, better display and better rear camera to name a few. While the Samsung will give you local warranty, better pen/stylus support and the Android updates are likely to be more regular.

      • I believe that the Samsung Tab S8 allows MicroSD cards up to 1tb as well, so you can add on Storage if required.

      • Samsung S8 has TFT screen. Not Shure how it compares in the real life though

    • +1

The included stylus on the Samsung is pretty nice

Samsung = expensive + low performance + low battery live

  • Any knowledge or experience with Oneplus Pad?

    • -1

it has a mediatek processor. I would stay away from it if i were you.

      • +1

Why? The Dimensity CPUs are some of the best performing with many on par or out performing Qualcomm.

        • +1

Mediatek doesnt honor GPL and hence it doesnt have as long a support compared to Qualcomm. Plus there more support from developers for custom-roms/kernel when Xiaomi drops support for Pad 6 than Oneplus.

          • @4frodo: Yeah they don't always release the source codes and will for OEMs who pay. Hence why a lot of lesser brands will release new devices instead of updating. While bigger brands will happily release new updates.

            • @Clear: well it's not about OEM who pay. with Mediatek it's always been 1 upgrade and you are dead in the water after that. So dont really want to add to the landfill(yes it works fine even with no updates but it's not secure enough)..

That may have been the case back in 2014 but not now. MediaTek provide a lot more support for their flagship CPUs.

                • @Clear: Do you have an example of a MTK device that is supported and has up to date OS 2 years or even 1 year after lauching? I am honestly curious as I remember the old times when Xiaomi phones with MTK were worse on support than the ones with Qualcomm.

                  • @ALBastru: There's heaps that do. The Redmi Note 9 5G from 2020 for example shipped with Android 10 and goes up to Android 12. Basically anything with the flagship Dimensity CPUs are more likely to get upgrades.

  • I've got a Mi Pad 5 Pro - pretty good for youtube and tiktok

  • +1

I've had my Mi Pad 5 for a year and a half now and it runs flawlessly for media consumption and gaming. Really premium tablet for the price in my opinion.

  • Interesting how it is "no GPS" when the SD chips have that enabled by default and it's almost hooking it up to the WIFI antennas for more coverage..

  • Why is Chinese rom desirable in this case? Isn't global rom usually more useful for us?

    • +1

A lot of sellers will flash an 'unofficial' global ROM on these which has an unlocked bootloader, Widevine L3 and often buggy/unresponsiveness. If they sell the proper global release, e.g. the Indian version then that's more preferred than both.

      • in this case when you are buying from aliexpress, can you ask them to leave as is? or there are particular seller you need to buy from to get the rom?

        • +1

You can certainly ask and they may be able to do it.
