How do you eat it op?

And what does it taste like?

    • Just a fancy Brie.

      • +11

Fromager D'affinois is NOT fancy brie, it's the pinnacle of brie (that you can reliably get from stores).

        • +1

Just like bacon.. A fantastic cheese brings it :)

        • -1

There's a real depth of flavour to it that even amateurs can like. Do a side by side with the basic stuff

      • +2

Slightly different to a brie according to wikipedia, goes through a process of ultrafiltration. Not sure if this variety does or not.

      • +2

Smells worse over here than a dozen rotten eggs dropped in a vat of vinegar

        • I knew this sounded familiar and I’m happy to see a divinity quote in the wild!

      • Wow , that's expensive brie . Leave that one to the professionals !

    • +9

On a cracker or waterthins wafer (lavosh if you want to splurge), with a drop of honey or quince paste.

      Daffinois is my fav

      • Oh i see Raw or cooked?

        • No cooking. Just a small slice of the cheese on too of the wafer is enough with the above addition, then straight into the stomach

          • -4

@dangerdanger: OK so just jam it at my abdomen? Or do I smoosh it on? Never put something straight into my stomach before…

      • +1

        Chilli jam

    • +20

Baguette or french stick, with prosciutto (i went for the italian 18month today) - 70g is plenty for 2, chicken cognac pate if you want to go over the top. You can a tiny bit of spicy honey if you wanna go over the over the top.

      • And with a dry red wine

        • IMO sounds better with a good white. Might be traitorous in French eyes but I’d rather a Marsanne.

      • What's your favourite pate? Is there anything near to the Vietnamese banh mi pate in supermarkets?

        • +1

Not sure of supermarkets, but I recently tried chicken liver pate from City Larder and it was spot on for banh mi pates. They have an online shop (only delivers to VIC) and a few stockists around.

        • The best one Ive ever had is the meat fruit from Dinner by Heston RIP. But im quite easily pleased with Pate, bits Normandie from coles does the trick. Meatsmith in Collingwood had a decent one too.

          • @RickyPoontang: I had the Heston meat fruit in London when it was a thing for the first time. It was a vibe!

        • There's nothing in supermarkets that's like the Viet stuff in my opinion but my local Viet bakery is happy to sell a plastic container of their pate for like $10 or something. Worth it!!

      • +2

Came to see how this cheese tastes like. And you guys made me hungry. 😃

      • Ou nice

I never heard of chicken cogmac patty

    • +2

      Toasted sammich I reckon

      • =)

    • +1

eat it like you eat a burger and wash it down with some quality goon straight out of the skin

      • =)

    • -1

      Ditch the crackers.
      Have it on fresh bread.
Sourdough is good, baguette is better.
The fact that Aussies eat cheese on crackers makes me cry every time

      • +2

Love crackers. I can eat more cheese before I get full.

      • I see

      • +1

        Not sure why the downvotes.
Eat crackers with Tasty cheese all you want.
But with soft cheeses, like this one, a nice baguette or sourdough is infinitely better.

    • Lool you never had cheese before?

      • I find different cheese taste different thats why i asked as i never tried the one op posteed

        • This one is easy to eat, not very strong.

    • Like cream.

  • +1

    Thanks OP

D’Affinois is one of our faves too, good find.

    • Any other faves you would recommend from the supermarkets?

      • +1

There's a decent truffle brie from Aldi too

      • +1

king island blue brie is underrated for the price.

      • Ash Brie from Aldi is yummy

    • +4

Just picked up a slice to try from Coles (~$13-$16).

I'm not usually into fancy cheeses but this one's taste and texture is amazing.
The taste/smell is also pretty safe for those not adventurous with cheese.

Are there any similar cheese brands at a slightly more affordable price?

      • +1

Cant think for brie. The Castello blue (and black) is quite nice with a bita quince.

My partner is French and they wouldnt waste that much money on French Cheese.
I think I'll follow their advice.

    • +4

Said literally no French person ever.

      • -1

        lol.what a silly assumption.
I stated my partner was French, so why woukd you assume that.

    • +4

      a francophobic frenchie!

      • -2

your comment makes zero sense tbh

        • -1

i'm sure it makes some sense.

          • -1

            @ltwo: Made sense to me

          • @ltwo: so.. basically your comment states im a anti French… because I found that these cheese was overpriced for what it was.

            lol'..
please explain how that makes an iota of sense.

    • +2

I'm French and it's an awesome cheese.
And of course we would spend that much on good cheese.

      • -2

        So a silly French person.

        Fair enough.

      • Yes, we were invited to a friends house for dinner in Paris, and they certainly paid much more for many other different French cheese

        • -1

          oh brother.

you guess love to argue but not against what someone actaully commented.

yes.. French have much more expensive cheese.
          but this isnt France.

Its like being in France and saying 'Australians pay much more for Seafood in Australia.

Yes we do.. doesnt mean its any better to do that.

          Geez… some ozbargainers.

    • Let's all fly to France instead so we can pay their prices

    • +2

French here and can confirm this is a nice cheese. Very tasty.

Yes expensive but this is Australia

      • -1

lol. so youre saying you over spend on cheese here.
        Well done.

Btw. never said it wasnt nice.
So… No live culture in these i guess.

        • It's probably twice as expensive if not more here compare to France.

    • French here too, can confirm this cheese is one of the best I've tried down under (even though there's not much competition tbh)

  • +1

    Thanks OP, just bought 4

  • +14

    This or Laughing Cow?

    • +2

Laughing cow only if you can afford it

    • Which one is that? Link?

    • +3

Laughing cow is too pedestrian, La vache qui rit for the refined palate.

    • +1

      My favourite childhood cheese.
Its changed alot though. Doesnt taste as good

    • +1

Honestly, D'affinois tastes like a fancy laughing cow to me, and I'm all for it.

      • That's exactly what my partner and I always say. It's delicious and evil.

  • +1

    Merci !

  • +1

They are selling wedges for $11 each (or 4 for $35) at the cheese festival at the rocks (think it ends tonight).

    • I'm not familiar with that weight. Can you please translate to $/kg for comparison.

      • Worked out to be $57ish a kilo. Wedges are around 180-200g

  • Any good vegan cheeses?

    • +22

      No.

    • +12

      Vegan
      Cheese
      Good

      Pick 2…

(but now I'm really confused what a "vegan good" is)

      • +3

@iDroid goods (products) made for vegans..?
(the word good has multiple meanings, it's all about perspective)

    • Fauxmagerie do decent vegan cheese. Toasties are awesome, feta is good but soft cheeses are just ok

    • Yeah, blended cashews…

  • reckon this is any good heated up?

    • Not sure, gut feel is no. But hey it's discounted, might as well try!

    • +1

It'll fall apart into a melted blob. It's very soft and goey if you leave it out and melts on toasted bread very quickly, i wouldn't put it in the oven.

  • +1

is this a french double-cream soft cheese made from cow's milk.

  • +5

Every once in a while, Cheaper Buy Miles has a whole wheel of this for $15

    • Interesting business! Havent heard of them before. Decent best before?

      • +1

About a month but that means it’s perfectly ripe! But for $8/kg who cares? I get through a 1kg and give away the other 1kg in 250g pieces. They often have the bleu version too.

      • +1

They sell things usually near or past the best before date. Which, for soft cheese, is the perfect ripeness. And for hard cheese, who cares, it lasts for ages anyway

    • They often have a range of imported cheese close to use by date

  • Occasionally Romeos Foodland will be cheaper in SA as well as the Central Market (Fifth Ave Deli). $55-60 if you're lucky.

Best consumed with a good glass of your fave wine 🍷

Edit - cannot see it available in SA. Have tried all the usual suspects including the main fulfilment centre at Churchill. Not available.

  • can you also melt this and mix in pasta sauce?
Link photo shows 2kg and price $13.40?

    • +1

      200g

    • $134.00 for 2kg.
