I got scammed on eBay buying one of those, though the listing had official Apple pictures and model numbers, and it came in an authentic box with a real serial number. The seller had the gall to rebuke my negative feedback.

If you’re a digital artist there really is no other alternative to the original Apple Pencil 2. If you’re not just don't waste your money
Idk for ~200 you start getting into drawing tablets with an actual screen (smaller 1080p but much more responsive). For under a 100 you get drawing tablets (no screen) with a drawing area close to the size of something between an a5 and a4 piece of paper. More serious digital artists aren't buying ipads to draw on in the first place.
I'm no expert on the subject but I think the iPad is better then you give it credit for. For example:
- You also can use the iPad for a million other things
- The Apple pencil has features that I don't believe are on lower end tablet styluses (tilt, the number of sensitivity levels)
- You don't need a computer attached to the iPad
- The software is comparability cheaper (Procreate, Notability - not sure what the other tools are)
- The iPad retina display resolution appears to be higher then the low and mid range tablets
- Portability, it's great you can pull the iPad out of your bag and use it where every you might be - or get an idea to draw something
- Supposedly you can use the iPad as an external screen to a computer, so you can still use Photoshop with the Stylus (I might be wrong about this).
Again I have no idea what most serious artists use but it's a pretty great product.
Have a look at a tear down - https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+Pencil+Teardown/52955 . There is a reasonable amount of complexity in the device. I think the name "pencil" causes confusion as the name seems to be something that many users fixate on.
You do have cheaper options such as the Logitech pencil or any number of third party styluses with cut down feature sets. Many of these would do what a lot of users require.
Secondly, you need to evaluate whether you need this. I have one - I've used it a handful of times and it is pretty good. That said, I have used it nowhere near enough to justify the purchase price.

Do i need apple pencil? I don't draw, just want the pen for writing, taking notes, highlighting books, editing photos / videos. I'm sceptical about the random cheap alternatives that they might stop functioning after few weeks / months, making me having to buy another one. Any good alternstives recommendations?
If you are looking for writing and note taking, I wouldn’t go past the Apple Pencil as the input latency is minimal compared to other alternatives and makes it more like a real writing experience.
I have an 2021 iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil as well as a Surface Studio Laptop with the Surface Slim Pen 2 and its not even close, both the writing experience and the functionality.

What do you think of the Samsung Tab and writing experience / software there compared to Apple pencil and iPad? Similar to the above poster I don't draw, just want to take notes, draw diagrams, write, highlight, etc
I personally prefer Samsung writing experience (Tab S8) over Apple. It feels more of real writing and the overall feeling. I found it strange with Apple pencil & ipad. Either becuz of ipad's screen or its pencil's tip, it feels like writing on a glass window with a pen? Perhaps i need to buy ipad paperlike screen protector?😂 u can go to the store and try writing with each pen yourself.
Software-wise, I guess Apple wins over with many notes apps to be used with the pen.
The main reason i go with ipad is i have a macbook, the ipad acts as a on-the-go device for me when i cant have my hand on my mac. And becuz i found apple devices last longer without lag & freeze than android. 😂

Word of warning to anyone who gets an Apple Pencil, if you drop it and it lands on the nip it will easily break the tiny sensor inside and can’t be repaired. Happened to my previous one :(
