Very, very tempted to get it but the lack of compatible games is why I wouldn't yet. Death Stranding is pretty much the only big title on my list now that I can play on Deck.

Quick way to check which of your games are compatible: https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeck/mygames

    • +9

I would recommend using Protondb to check game compatibility most of the time there are fixes provided by other users since Valve is kind of slow when it comes to verifying games

      • Hey thanks for this! I just went through the list and it seems like I have quite a few playable titles. Now… to buy it now or keep waiting, that's the question.

    • +3

Some of the less than perfect compatibility scores are for dumb reasons. Dead Space 2 isn’t FULLY compatible because you need to use the on screen keyboard to log in to the launcher.

It seems like some stuff that gets in the way of literally pressing A to play detracts from the scores even though some of them are really dumb reasons

    • +2

RDR2, GTA, elden ring, Spider man, GoW etc. run good on steam deck too..
in fact most of RPGs titles

    • +2

In my limited, albeit 100+ game experience, it's a load of shit, Valve just hasn't or couldn't be bothered testing it yet.

There's some, like GTA3, where you do have to install RE3, and some, like Just Cause 2, where you do need a specific Proton version.

But then there's shit like the newest re-release of Doom (1993) that says incompatible, and the buttons are automapped and ready to go. Recently I beat Battlefront 2 (the reboot) on it, says incompatible, worked flawlessly, buttons mapped and recognized, and all. About an hour through Arkham Asylum, same story, and countless others. It's not necessarily going to be everything, but it is a metric (profanity) more than they say.

    • +2

Don’t look at verified. They basically refer to an absolutely perfect experience only.

95% of my 1000+ game library work just fine… surprisingly even games listed not compatible are fine lots of the time too with a tiny bit of work

    • +1

      Emudeck is your friend

    • +2

I've been able to play quite a few "Unsupported" games. All the Batman Arkham games, for example. Like someone above said, worth checking ProtonDB.

    • +2

Thanks guys. I bit the bullet and bought it. Can't wait to try it out.

    • the lack of compatible games is why I wouldn't yet

That's just not true, pretty much every single game I've tried so far worked and I have 500 games in my Steam library. As mentioned by others, use ProtonDB page to confirm how a game actually runs.

    • +2

I've never had a single game not work, I have over 500 games. Just because it's not listed doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Literally I've never had a single comparability issue. People really underestimate proton, some games run better with Proton-GE which is trivial to install (4 clicks)

      • That's really good to know. Do most games run better on GE from your experience, or only a handful so far?

  • +1

STEAMINDEAL1 doesnt work when i try to apply it, and the discounted prices always end up higher that in the post.

    • +3

All of the eBay Plus weekend deals begin 10AM. Go to sleep first :P

      • +1

        it appears i cannot read

        • +1

Anheuser-Busch products do that to you.. 😉

    • 10am.

    • +1

Good news, code now bringing it down to $712.06 when I add to cart (this will be the price tomorrow along with PWE22 code). Updating deal now

    • the STEAMINDEAL1 seems to be working for me. Could be specific to the 64gb model?

      • Correct, each storage size has a different code as per OP

  • +1

I think all-time low was around $640 on a website based out of Hong Kong called Jackdeal. Obviously sounded a little sketchy to say the least, but a few OzBargainers successfully nabbed it at that price. $712 might be the best price considering you're getting it from Allphones, though!

    • That's awesome. Yeah with this deal you get the proper warranty. But at $640 that was a steal

  • +1

Arghhhhh this or the rog ally , not sure if the ally is worth the increased price.

    • Depends what games you want to play. Ally for modern big games.

      • +8

I don't think it's that black and white, unfortunately.

Ally has the bigger and higher resolution screen, but if you use it to it's full power, you'll get one hour battery life on it (literally - read reviews!)

The big (BIG) game-changing feature that doesn't look as sexy on a spec list is the Steamdecks ability to standby.

Phone is ringing? Hit the power button, go do whatever you want to do, come back five hours later and pick up exactly where you left off.

Windows is terrible for this, and all of the windows based handhelds have had this same issue. Valve has done an amazing job with this on the Steamdeck.

    • -1

Could buy the 64gb version, chuck in a 512gb Micro sd. If the Rog goes on sale sell your deck you will at least break even

    • depends what you're after. do you want a portable windows 11 device (ally), or do you want a portable game console experience (steamdeck)

      • Give it time and someone will port SteamOS or something running Proton to the Ally

        • That may be the case but it will likely never feel quite as polished.

    • I'll throw in another one to consider: ONEXPLAYER is having a sale now. Superior hardware but costlier and has little community support.

      https://onexplayerstore.com/

      • +1

Not the worst prices (Im assuming it's AUD). However their handhelds are using older integrated chips. The Rog ally and newer handheld use the 780m chip where as ONEXPLAYER uses the last gen integrated chip. I would pass due to lack of support, older hardware and price not too far behind the Rog ally

      • Onexplayer. Very expensive. These are US prices

  • Asus Rog Ally is truly your friend.

  • +1

The storage IS upgradeable if you want to get more for less.

  • Very nice. Will claim another price protect drop on the 256. Thanks op

  • +11

    Awesome deal!

For anyone considering the ROG Ally instead of the Steam Deck: the Deck has 3 key differentiators that IMO makes it a better handheld gaming device:

    • sleep mode: you can instantly put your game to sleep on the Deck, and resume later from where you left off. Granted, it doesn't work perfectly with every game, but many do. SteamOS handles sleep mode much better than Windows 11

    • custom control profiles - depending on the game, other users would've shared custom button mapping/profiles for you to use. This is quite invaluable, as I've had some less popular unverified games that at first didn't work with the Deck controls, but found custom button maps that did the job perfectly (even incorporating the back paddles for extra functionality)

    • touchpads - fantastic for games that need mouse/pointer controls, like RTS games

    • +3

      sleep mode

I have just started rdr2 finally and holy ***** how GOOD is sleep mode for this game???!

Pick it up / put down whenever.

  • I'm a noob with consoles like these.. how does this compare with an Nintendo switch?

    • +5

Much more powerful, and able to run many more titles than a Switch which is rather limited in comparison. Whichever is better really depends on what games you play/want to play though.

      • +2

BUT also - much heavier, louder, larger, and less battery life.

These consoles are honestly better off being considered as small, ergonomic gaming laptops, and not a Nintendo Switch competitor.

        • True, both provide vastly different experiences despite both being gaming handhelds. Some will find the Switch more functional and the overall obvious choice whilst others will find the Steam Deck perfect. Like I said before, it really does depend on what games you play.

If you were really unsure as to which one to pickup you could always emulate the Switch on your Deck, but I'm not sure as to the performance!

      • Thanks. I'll be buying a console for my child (8 years old) for christmas. So it'll be kids games only. No adult gaming.
        Knowing that… what's your recommendation?

        • +2

The Switch, games will just work out of the box and chances are lots of your kid's friends will also have one, so they can play multiplayer/discuss similar titles. Cheaper as well, readily available everywhere.

    • +1

Just get this or the rog ally and emulate the switch. It's not like the switch does a better job, it can barely hold 30fps. Atleast with emulation you can get 60fps on some switch games

      • +1

I was playing tphd on wii u emulator. Rom has game breaking bug and i couldn't finish the game. Totk has similar graphical bugs on emulator

    • +1

this requires a lot more technical knowledge. if you get a switch everything will just work. if you get this, some games will work, some you'll have to tinker with, and some just straight up wont work. but the library available with this is much more vast, and the games are much much cheaper

  • +2

Must hodl for 6 mths for Rog Ally.

But I cant resist any longer.

    • +1

      I am hodl for Ally.

    • +1

I’ll help you out. Wait until the community has it running steamOS and it has some quick suspend functionality, otherwise you’ll just have an inferior steam deck (going by what many reviews have said). Might be cheaper by then as well

    • Youll be glad you held even everybody is going to start having the issues talked about before even release they haven’t addressed.

  • For AAA games better to buy the ally, for emulation and older games looks like a good deal.

  • what's ozbargain favorite steam deck ssd upgrade, any link?

  • +1

Active now. Just grabbed one. woo hoo!

  • +1

I was about to buy two Steam Deck but the 64GB is out of stock.

    • Deserved. I wanted 1 64gb but it's "Out of stock / 21 sold". They only had 21?

      • +1

I'm buying one for myself and my mate though.

        • Haha alright, no broden. I still have the Kogan amex spend $500 get $75 back offer expiring in 6 days, might have to settle for that :/

    • +5

      Hi amoretpax199

we have just allocated more stock. Thanks!

      • +1

Awesome! I will grab two now.

      • Thanks for allocating more stock, finally bought one!

      • Hi,

Just confirming, description says it's sealed, so that means it comes with the original charger and we have to provide the plug adapter ourselves? Just want to be sure what I need to have before it arrives.

        • +1

It's USB C charging, you don't need any specific charger.
          45W/15V/3A USB PD 3.0

          • @Nom: Thanks I'll note this down when I get a new charger. The original one included but it needs a adapter.

  • Wasn't sure if I would end up pulling the trigger, but I got the 256 since the 64 was out of stock

    • 256 has faster SSD and less hassle if you don’t want to bother upgrading. Comes with a case too I think. So not a bad deal.

      • +1

Comes with a case too I think.

I believe all Decks regardless of capacity come with a carrying case

        • +1

Ah alright, I thought the 64Gb didn’t come with one. Good know.

      • I was planning to upgrade the ssd, but I guess I don't need to rush to it with the slightly higher capacity

  • really want to get one, but also not sure i will really use that much since i don't travel that much now

    • Same boat, but snagged one anyway. I offloaded my switch when I stopped travelling, but I could justify a steam deck because it's a full PC so I could take it out and about instead of a laptop. It's a stretch but I could use it for linux SDR walkabouts.

  • +1

Gonna travel to NZ soon, purchased one cause the price is too good to pass lol

      • if you leave australia and then travel back to Australia don't you need to declare all items you purchase if it exceeds $900?

if steam deck is approx $700 and you can only buy $199 of oversea goods before need to declare it..
so if your total is $1000 (including the deck) will you need to pay $100 GST when return to Australia?

        • It's spelled out clearly in the link :

If you bring goods back into Australia for which a GST refund via the TRS has been claimed, the goods must be declared, and if the value of those goods (combined with any other overseas/duty free purchases) exceeds the passenger concession allowance, any applicable GST and/or duty may need to be paid unless another concession (example, all personal clothing – except furs) is available.

You're ok as long as you stay under the threshold…

          • @Nom: yeah i read that..
just wanted to check if I understood it correctly..

            So based on my example..

if you purchase goods oversea that include adding the cost of the steam deck equals $1000,
would we need to pay $100 GST?

            • @pinkybrain: Yes if $1000 is the threshold.

              • @Nom: if you travelling by yourself, isn't it $900 as the threshold?

don't quite understand this whole TRS scheme
why they take 10% off when you leave
but when you return add back 10%
if you buy stuff overseas and total goods you bring back is over $900 (including the product you took out of australia)

Also lots of people bring food, is that also calculated
or only electronics or includes everything e.g. fashion, perfume etc.

                • @pinkybrain:

don't quite understand this whole TRS scheme
why they take 10% off when you leave

The intent of the scheme is to refund you the consumption tax (GST is Australia's consumption tax) for goods that will not be consumed in Australia. Classic examples of this are gifts that you plan to leave with someone overseas, or a bottle of wine you will consume overseas (GST & WET).

but when you return add back 10%
total goods you bring back is over $900

This only counts goods coming in to be consumed in Australia for which you haven't paid Australia's consumption tax. So if you take a $700 Steam Deck and $2000 worth of other electronics (laptop, camera, phone), but you only claim TRS on the Steam Deck and nothing else, you can still bring back $200 worth of goods bought overseas before hitting the $900 threshold.

Also lots of people bring food, is that also calculated

Food is also meant to be calculated, but valuing some things would be quite difficult.

Anecdotally, I've declared goods totalling over threshhold and been waved through. Just don't be egregious about it, and definitely don't bring retail quantities of anything for which they might perceive an intention to resell in Australia.

  • Seems cheap but with the Ally it kind of seems updated.

SD2 with sleeker form factor and same chip as the Ally would be nice…

    • +2

unfortunately that could be a while

    • Outdated*

  • Can I play Half Life remastered on this ?

  • +2

I really dont need this but i want this lol

  • +1

    Welp well bought one….

  • +4

Get the 64GB version, 1TB U3 A2 Micro SD card, 1TB WD 2230 M2 SSD, the JSAUX transparent back with its great L4/L5/R4/R5 buttons, the 65W Heymix GaN charger that comes with a 100W USB C cable and you have one of the best gaming handheld setups that will get you playing with the least fuss and regardless of the spec, gives you a better experience than any Windows handheld of comparable cost. Remember to keep a few dollars aside for a headset!

    • Links to all please 🙏

      • +2

Microsd: just sit and wait, ozb delivers.
SSD: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/777025 but I went the WD instead of the Samsung for a few extra $.
        Back cover: https://jsaux.com/products/transparent-back-plate-for-steam-… is USD$30
Charger: set up a Heymix GaN ozb search alert, last one was $45

Thanks pangasteve, I completely forgot about the jsaux cover. I saw some nice videos on youtube forever ago.

heymix charger vs jsaux dock, now there's a tough one.

        • what is the benefit of that 65W Heymix GaN charger?

and what is wrong with steam charger, does it work in australia?
and do they usually come with an AU adapter?

          • @pinkybrain: 65W charger just works faster than your phone charger might.
Based on other comments, the Deck does come with a charger, but not an AU plug, which is why it might be preferred to get another one.
