Back when the steamdeck first came out, I was reading that the 512GB version was the best one to get because it had the anti-glare screen coating.
Does that still make sense these days, when the 64GB version is so much cheaper, and 2230 SSD upgrades are dropping in price? Is that why you suggest getting the 64GB version?

      • +1

Yep, spot on. It's far cheaper to DIY SSD upgrade + get your own screen protector if glare is a problem, especially now that the deck's been out for ages and storage cost has gone down.

      • +2

Exactly that, as Korda replied - I paid $157 for a 1Tb Sandisk Extreme U3 A2 micro SD card from Catch and $120.70 for a 1Tb WD SSD from Aliexpress and even counting the $30 matte screen protector that's still in its box because glare hasn't been much of an issue, even on the train, that still leaves you almost $80 cheaper than the 512Gb model.

        • is it better that you bought the 1TB microSD card + 1TB WD SSD
or it is better that you buy the 2TB WD which probably works out cheaper now (if you bought the steam deck now which would you do now)?

Also is there any advantage that you have a separate microsd as well as the SSD?

          • @pinkybrain: There's no real world speed difference, I got the Micro SD last year when cheap and good 2230 SSD's weren't as common. Assuming that it's compatible, I would just get a 2Tb SSD today and a cheap 256Gb Micro SD card for retro roms.

            • +1

@pangasteve: is there any reason why you put the ROMS on the micro SD and not on the SSD has well?

              • @pinkybrain: Yeah why need the micro sd when you have a 2tb ssd?

              • +1

@pinkybrain: I use the Micro SD card in multiple gaming handhelds and I've found it faster and easier to copy things to the Steam Deck using a Micro SD card instead of over Wifi.

                • @pangasteve: That's true. Easy to set up roms on the steam deck?

                • @pangasteve: what other handhelds you do you own ?

so the microSD was in those handhelds and now permanently in the steam deck?

  • Steam Deck arrived today, however it has come with a UK charger. Is that normal ?

    • +2

Yes. Because the Steam Deck is not officially sold in Australia. The ones we get are grey imports.

      • Thanks for confirming. That's what I thought.

          did they provide an adapter?

          that sucks if no…

          • @pinkybrain: No, they didn't. It just came in the standard brown retail box with a shipping label stuck to the side. They probably didn't want to break the seal to insert an adapter.

            • @ash2000: is the brand box same size as the steam box?
else they could added AU adapter in a slighter bigger box or the package bag (with bubble wrap lined inside, not sure what that is called)

More likely it just so it saves them money not including it and increase in shipping cost size etc.

Can you use AU adapter to plug the UK plug into it?

              • @pinkybrain: The steam deck box is just a brown box, inside is the deck. No further boxes.

The power supply will work fine with an AU travel adapter . I havent tried it as I have other chargers to the same specs.

          • @pinkybrain: It's USB-C anyway….

    • +3

It's USB C charging, you don't need any specific charger.
      45W/15V/3A USB PD 3.0

    • Allphones didn't provide a separate AU adapter/charger?

      • No. Just the UK version.

      • got mine today as well abit disappointed lol.
        eu charger and no adaptor.

was hoping to use and set it up as i get it.

  • Thanks, got one!

got a god damn headache deciding between this or the Ally, got this one 64GB and a samsung SSD 1TB, seems like a better value and better battery life and the touch pads are needed .
gotta think about repairability and upgrades too, steam has been out for awhile now, easier to find replacement parts if needed.
