Those cons make it a bit of a dud

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the AU release of this dual band only?

    • +1

AU/EU region got the Alien dual band SKU.

US region got the Alien tri-band SKU.

      • US model has operator lock

      • +1

Ah. Thanks for the verification. I wasn't totally sure.

the only positive is the lcd screen, everything else is generic

We have one of these and I would agree. It actually handles the load better than my old ASUS RT-AC68U (I had three of these on mesh), however it is incredibly limited in its features in comparison. I am going to get myself the new ASUS router for the added functionality, the upgraded specs would mean this should handle more load too.

      • I’m looking for an ASUS too. Do you have model recommendations? Thanks in advance.

        • +1

FTTC, FTTP, HFC - Asus RT-AX86U, Asus RT-AX86U Pro, Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX6000, Asus RT-AX58U. Merlin firmware model list.
          FTTN, FTTB - Asus DSL-AX82U.

These are all dual band. Tri-band variants cost more.

        • +1

Asus RT-AX86U is certainly my choice.

      • The latest Asus routers have tri-core or quad-core processors with 256MB, 512MB and 1GB of RAM.

  • Ubiquiti stuff is so insanely overrated.

    • +4

      Compared to what exactly?

For the price I think the brand is very good.

      • +1

The best comparison for Ubiquiti gear would be TP Link’s Omada range..

And in comparison to that ekul777 is correct - Ubiquiti is wayyyy overpriced.

        • +2

You are going to need to provide more evidence then that

          • TP Link has historically been a budget brand and while they have somewhat pivoted and now have enterprise gear, there isn't any evidence to show they are on the same level.

          • Provide a link to a similar TP-Link product like the deal posted from an Australian shop.

My knowledge is a bit limited with TP-Link's latest stuff but my understanding is they are very cheap and perform well in very specific needs which is great as long as thats all you need.

A huge part of Ubiquiti's value is the software in terms of reliability and wide range of features.

I noticed the return policy details:
The seller won't accept returns for this item.

    • +1

Isn't that what most eBay sellers list? It doesn't block returns for faulty products afaik, just change of mind

  • +1

This item was $320 last month according to the buyer reviews https://www.ebay.com.au/fdbk/feedback_profile/futuregear?fil…

  • So what do you need to make this a mesh? Any ubiquity wireless access point?

    • +2

From memory another one of these units.

    • +2

2 x Amplifi units. A mesh won't be created with a Unifi AP.
