    Works on pixel tablet too

with 8% giftcard offer (Utlimategiftcard) from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774935 gives another $54 savings

    • +3

Needs to buy whole amount as one gift card as it works as credit card in jbhifi payment page

      • Can you get $1,000 and still have the last $325 on the gift card after?

        • +1

          Yes but just buy $675.

        • Sure why not or you can get $674.10 exact and got $1825.90 of quota left

    • +1

      From 7pm.

    • +1

Very tempting - but Wookie just made a comment stating that Ultimate Cards can be hit or miss on JB. Wouldn't want to be sitting on $675 of Ultimate giftcards AND have to spend anotehr $675 to buy the phone.

Would be great if someone adventurous can confirm this approach works on this phone!

      • +1

I have used the Ultimate giftcard in the credit card information few weeks before in jbhifi online. Not sure something changed from april 15th to now.

        • +1

Based on Wookie's comment, seems to depend on whether Riskified (their fraud detection system) is extra sensitive or not. Having hundreds of people all trying to redeem Ultimate Giftcards via the CC section could set off alarm bells.

          • @poppingtags: I used one online with JB just a few days ago, no problem.

      • +9

Can confirm that $675 Ultimate Gift Card worked without issue on this Pixel 7A.

        • You da real MVP!

        • Hi OP, how long does it take to receive the ultimate gift card by email ?

          • @seven7: Took 20 minutes from order to receiving card details for me.

            • @StrategicMess: @StrategicMess Thanks mate. So we need to buy a gift card for $675 as Ultimate Him gift card i suppose?

              • @seven7: Actually used Ultimate Everyone, but any with JB Hifi should work the same.

          • @seven7: Took me around 5min or so for the email to arrive, at first it just said processing in the status.

I just completed check out and the card worked fine to purchase the 7A.

      • +1

Can confirm the Ultimate Gift Card purchase worked smoothly. I was able to use the UGC within 2 minutes of issuance on the JB website. Happy Days!

      • Definitely a miss from me.
Got my money locked in. Please avoid if you can in every possible way. I went to the phone with the gift card purchasedand they keep cancelling the order within 5 seconds due to failed verification process.

      • Can also confirm - ultimate gift cards just worked for me too.

      • Can also confirm success. Got a $675 gift card…. and then realised they do overnight shipping for $6! So had to buy a $10 JB Gift Card so I could make up the difference. Bit annoying, and took JB like 30 minutes to get me the gift card, but so far success!

        • Why not C&C?no stocks near your location?

    • +1

Can also confirm. Did Ultimate Everyone gift card with 8% off, using exact amount in the JB checkout. Bought the phone (and a case). Worked just fine.

    • Thanks. Bought the exact amount and entered it into the credit card section at checkout. TRS in a few weeks. Good deal!

  • This is great for those who don't have 10% edu discount/ 2TB plan that also further gives you 10% off on the Google Store!

    • +2

This works out better as you save cash, rather than getting google store credit in other deal, which you have to spend ultimately.

      • +6

How is this a better deal than the Google Store + student beans deal?
        - same purchase price of $674.10
        - $150 of Google credit vs $150 of JB credit
        - Free case via Google store deal

Google store credit vs JB store credit, each has benefits

        What am I missing?

        • +8

You had to already be a google one subscriber, and many more things to spend JB gift card on than google gift card.

        • -1

          What am I missing?

It seems like you are missing the cost of the Google One 2TB plan (or edu membership)?

          • @oz-dave: I mean they're both the same, if you already had and edu membership and 2TB plan, and since this deal wasn't there last week those that bought the Pixel 7A using edu/ 2TB plan ultimately at the end they'd end up paying $530 ish if they decide to buy something from the store using the credits and sell it.

This JB deal is the same thing for those without edu/ 2TB plan minus the few additional steps and wait time for the cashback to hit your account.

At the end both the deals get you the phone for sub $500 but the Google deal gets you the "Limited Edition" case.

            • +1

@thesmartone1125: But you are confined to spend the google credit on google store items only, whereas with JB GC, you have plenty of options to spend on.

              • @OZBsince2018: Although that is true, but at the end of the day if you're using your credit to buy something from the store and selling it.

For eg: From the pixel 7a deal, you're left with $217 credit, next time when the buds pro are on sale at $215 you can get them for basically free.

And I have seen plenty of buds pro sell for $120-$130, bringing the price down to $540 ish.

So very similar pricing in the end, but yes the JB gift card does hold a greater value since there's a countless possibilities you could spend it on and less steps required.

But purely which deal yields the most bang for the buck, I'd say they're pretty even.

          • @oz-dave: No, I am missing neither.

          • -2

@oz-dave: Not really, one is bound to Google store and one to JB, I don't think either defines a better deal

        • +1

  • Dang just bought it Sunday for 749$? Any chance if JB does price guarantee?

    • +2

Normally they do it so worth to try it but since promo code discount they may decline.

      • depends on the manager

    • Yep they refunded a tv price difference of $200 when the price went down within a week. That was without coupons tho but no harm in taking your receipt into the store to check. Purchased on Elizabeth street and got difference refunded at Melbourne central..

    • In the same boat here. I bought it online and chat has just said they can't do price guarantees online so it will have to be done in person.

They also said it doesn't cover coupons so I would need to buy a new one and return it against the original purchase… this whole thing seems like a giant time waster for everyone involved but its $75.

      • +1

Yeah it's all up to the store managers which is ridiculous in my opinion, I tried my luck at the original JB Hi-Fi location I bought my Pixel on Sunday and they straight up refused and tried to say it's because of the coupon code that's not covered which got me so furious so I just tried another location and they were totally fine. Refunded without any issues :)

    • +1

Get it done boys it's OUR money and we are the customers.

      • But you get their items

    • They did for me earlier this year on a Pixel 7. Bought for $899 and the week after it was $749. Refunded by JBHIFI online with minimal fuss.

    • I went back to JB yesterday after buying on launch day (which I /never/ do, precisely because of annoying things like this). They refunded me the difference very happily, despite it being a bit of a chore for them because I'd also used another voucher code (Perks) at the same time.

  • +1

Can you use the "CLICKFRENZY23" in the shop itself if I need to get the gift card ASAP?

    • I was wondering the same - no email yet

    • +1

This is included in the T'c and C's:

"The online shopping event runs from 7pm (AEST) May 16 to midnight on May 18. That’s 53 hours to shop all deals on a heap of JB tech, including new-in store and trending products, and stacks of leading brands you love."

So looks like its an online offer only.

    • Yes you can use the click frenzy code instore. I was told if you checkout via click and collect (check stock levels first) your voucher should be in your inbox within minutes. Fast enough to look for accessories of something else to purchase while still in store

      • I did click and collect and didnt get the $150 gift card yet??

        • yeah when I clicked and collected mine they advised the voucher would be emailed to me in a week or two, as I asked for the voucher in store.

  • Is this phone dual SIM (nano and e-SIM)?

    • +2

      Yes

    • +1

I believe these should also be dual e-SIM capable.

  • +1

Would you go the 7 or the 7a? For this price, the 7a will be an upgrade from my Nord.

    • +4

If both are similar price, why not get the 7. MKBHD found it hard to justify the 7a if the 7 price is within striking distance.

      • +2

comparing MSRPs, yes, but the normal 7 goes on sale for ~$750, this is ~$480 combined with the GC mentioned above.

      • The 7 is better obviously as long as you get it for $699 or something. It sounds like the "a" models will be phased out after this year as they are getting too close in spec and price, so fairly pointless.

Slow wireless charging only is a big negative, hard to believe they did that. I suppose soon phones will have esim only as well.

Still a pretty good deal though if you need something.

  • +1

Pixel 7A or Samsung Galaxy S23? I can trade in my Galaxy S23 at a $30 loss and pickup this, not opposed to the idea due to the laughable camera defect affecting the Galaxy S23 that has no guidance from Samsung on ever getting fixed.

    • +2

Compare the specs and see how you feel about it.

      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=12082&idPhone…

People have preferences towards/against both software suites. They've both had their highs and lows.

I'd point out a few differences like the front glass protection, refresh rate, and differences in charging. (In particular the lack of reverse wireless charging for those with TWS with charging cases)

Also the irony in that there might be more Samsung hardware in the Pixel 7a than in the Samsung device now, as the 7a's Tensor G2 uses a Samsung radio and (likely) CPU design, whereas the S23 uses Qualcomm SoC components.

    • +6

The 7A is generally compared with the Samsung A series phones so id imagine the S23 should have the edge over the 7a. I am going to go the Samsung A54 for my wife over the 7a for:
      - Bigger Screen
      - Better water resistance rating
      - longer Android updates
      - SD Card
      - Faster cable charging
      - Bigger and better battery life.
      - Adaptive refresh rate (up to 120HZ)

The 7a has wireless charging (slow), 8g of ram (instead of 6g), slightly better cameras, slightly snappier and thats about all i can see from video reviews. The gap between cameras and the CPU seems to be so minor you wont notice. There was probably a couple of other minor difference i didnt mention but the 7a is new so everyone is hyped about it and others prefer google built phones from Samsung.

      • Pretty sure the 7a with the Tensor G2 is a fair bit faster than the A54 with the laggy Exynos 1380.

I've got an a A33 which has the Exynos 1280 - it does the job, but it is annoyingly laggy while trying to multitask with it for work and reviews show the the Exynos 1380 isn't a huge improvement. Unless you need to squeeze every minute out of a phone's battery life, I'd probably choose the 7a these days.

        • Yeh definitely not a fair bit faster when you see side by side comparisons. Potentially the 120HZ vs 90HZ may help with it and depending on your use case then the Tensor G2 maybe better e.g gaming. But for most people unless you have them side by side you will not notice the milliseconds difference for everyday use.

          • @worthy1: It sounds like you are just speculating looking at overall specifications, you really need to use both phones side by side. Open the camera/video app, an e-mail client, maybe some browser or work-related app. Start actually using them, editing images etc…

The Exynos in the A54 is slow. The lag has meant I have had to retake many photos on job sites because it simply captures the photo too late after I take the shot. I've been flicking between different windows/apps to show clients things and it can't keep up.

            https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/samsung-exynos-1380-vs…

In some benchmarks such as gaming, the Tensor G2 found in Pixel 7a is over twice as the fast as the Exynos 1380 found in the A54. I'd say for general use it's over 50% faster. Depending on a person's use case, this can range from minor to quite annoying and it's subjective if the increased battery life of the A54 over the Pixel provides enough incentive to buy.

            • @buffalo bill: Nope by video reviews on youtube where they actually put the phones side by side and do those comparisons. Although you do get the irony of you then posting a link of side by side benchmark comparison results instead of use.

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHNR8hEmVDI

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8J7adtmYGQ

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gr_DaFCdJw

etc etc etc they all mention you wont notice the difference in everyday use.

You mentioned you have a A33 with the slower 12 chip in it but then now mention 'the A54 is slow. The lag has meant I have had to retake many photos on job sites because it simply captures the photo too late after I take the shot. I've been flicking between different windows/apps to show clients things and it can't keep up.' So you now have the A54 with the 1380 chip? im confused. Especially when the A54 actually gets great reviews with its cameras with the 7a (on par)

Benchmarks run an extremely resource intensive task to put the hardware through its paces. Not real world use at all. I did mention the G2 might be better for some tasks like gaming but there is no way someone will notice say a 1ms opening time on a 7a to a 1.5ms opening time (50% as you say) on the Samsung A54.

People debate cpu/gpu speeds way too much when there is little difference with a lot these days. If you want to say you have the fastest then go for it, awesome. Its not just the battery life that will be making the choice over it is a lot of the other Pro's the A54 has over the 7a (that i originally mentioned) that in my wifes use case makes it a clear win. If you game heaps, do emails etc then you do you

              • @worthy1: I don't have the fastest is what I'm saying. From what I read from those links: "The Pixel slaps it in every way".

The issue is when it doesn't take 1ms to process an image or do a task, it takes noticeably longer. A couple of seconds turns into what seems like a lot of lag.

I have the 1280 chip, but there is little improvement in the 1380 chip. We use A33s, A54s etc and Pixels at work and the Pixel 6a/7a is a lot faster but have less battery life. That's all I'm saying. Perhaps your wife won't notice if something is a little slower.

                • @buffalo bill: Gotcha, although i read the opposite. All i got from them is that it has a slight edge in performance only noticeable if you want to play games at extreme settings. No slapping in any other categories, no mention of lag or photo processing issues. Maybe they improved that on the software sides of things as thats where the processing is done. Sure the CPU helps but well optimised software makes the difference. Thats why google has always had the edge over samsung with its cameras even with lesser quality lenses and cpu's (flagship model cpus that is) because its software for capturing/processing is so good.

At the end of the day these are mid-range phones. Personally, im reliant on mine for work with pictures, emails etc thats why id always spent more for the flagship models. I have a S21 Ultra but i will probably switch to a Pixel 7 pro as im personally not a fan of the Samsung apps and a few other quirks. But yes the A54 will be more then enough for the wife :)

    • S23 of course. Not even close imho

      • -1

Well, the S23 camera is defective so when you take that into consideration, I think it's pretty close

          • +1

@nikoris: I'm not trying too hard and reading too many articles?
I literally own the phone, I am typing from it, I am taking photos with it….

            • -3

@rekke: What’s defective about it? Return it.

    • What camera defect? Why won't they take the phone back?

      • +1

        https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS23/comments/12owzg2/are_the_…

I haven't tried warranty. I'd rather trade it in at a small loss and make it quick rather than try make a warranty claim, have it assessed, potentially get rejected, then if its accepted get it refunded to gift cards since I paid using gift cards, just a massive headache.

I am hoping Samsung will either respond and push out a software update, or offer to replace the hardware if they find the cause. However they simply haven't made any statement at all despite it affecting the majority(?) of S23 / S23+ users on their 'flagship' phone.

        • Oh that's bad. Yeah warranty is a bit of a headache, they really should be recalling them and replacing them if it's so common.

I've definitely been conscious of that when choosing to pay for things with gift cards, I try to avoid it for a small loss especially if it's a store I'll probably never use again at that scale.

          • +1

@Void: Yeah it is crazy if you ask me. And 100% I agree with you, but I thought the gift cards were a no brainer since the Samsung S23 was the best price, best size and best fit for all of my requirements, I didn't think for a second they would have such awful quality control on their 'flagship' model. Shaking my head.

            • @rekke: I feel like they should refund back to cash if it's such a genuine fault. I mean it would take such precision and effort to misalign the lens by oneself so it's not like some grand scheme to convert discounted gift cards back to cash.

        • Very poor customer service to not fix such a major camera issue. When did you buy your samsung S23, was it on initial release? Has samsung fixed this issue on newer S23's or is the issue still there do you know?

          • +1

@Fast88: I purchased my phone in the Jb Hi-Fi trade in deal last month and got it for around $602 after deal stacking, but even now I don't know if I'd pay that amount due to the defective camera.

So perhaps Jb Hi-Fi had the same stock for the initial release but I definitely didn't buy it at release and it's still defective unfortunately

            • @rekke: That's terrible they keep selling defective phones months after release. Old stock or not its not acceptable. Even the A series cameras don't have that issue let alone a flagship

              • @Fast88: Tell me about it :( Guess that's just life, if you ignore the use cases where the camera is defective, it is a fairly good phone , worth the $602. More than that, not sure, I'd probably get a Pixel 7A instead.

                • @rekke: I have the S21 and was thinking to upgrade to the S23 eventually but now not so sure. I had the S20 FE and it had a touch screen issue. Lucky for me it did not affect me as i do not game on the phone but still it was an issue that samsung should have seen before releasing it. Yet they kept just bringing software updates which never fixed the issue as i would always run a test to check.
