$750 for 100,000 velocity points doesn't seem like a great deal to me, especially factoring in how hard it is to use AMEX in everyday spending patterns these days.
Includes a return domestic flight yearly, then all the other stuff like lounge passes. Pays itself off on the flight alone
Oh right, those perks should definitely be mentioned in the OP then - changes the equation somewhat.
I last had this card around 2017 and found it hard to find places that took it even back then, outside of major retailers. Was very difficult to achieve the minimum spend with it on regular things like council rates, car rego, body corp fees etc.
It's a different world now since 2017
@abs898: That's kinda my point, even fewer places take AMEX now than did in 2017.
@xyron: I would counter that, we pay at 90% of places using Amex; sure yes sometimes there is a surcharge of 1-1.5% at some places like council, body corp but that can be justified when you redeem rewards for airlines or hotel
@xyron: I would disagree with you Xyron. A large chunk of small businesses take AMEX now. I think its mainly due to “square” POS terminals accepting AMEX.
@Aroundthewicket: That is interesting and useful, but I tend to find that these CC points deals only make sense when you can funnel your "big" expenses through them without copping big surcharges. I guess if you live in a council area that takes AMEX or you pay enough in tax to make the ATO surcharge worth copping, it might be a different story. I myself was eyeing off this AMEX but just couldn't justify it as most of my small business' expenses are disbursed from income! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/761623
@xyron: It's $1000/month. Surely you'd get close enough to it with just your groceries? I'm at about $800/month for me and my partner at coles/woolies.
@ONEMariachi: With inflation we're probably getting close, but not really - baby due in June and thereafter, we probably will blitz $1k a month in groceries!
@xyron: yeah should be good in that regard then. I guess, if you haven't already and the finances allow it. You can get ahead on some clothes etc to push you over the mark. Babies grow a size like every month lol
@Aroundthewicket: Agreed, also Amex has really been pushing shop small
Amex is easy enough to use at most places now especially since you can use it through PayPal. Aldi is the only place I frequent that doesn’t accept it
Ive had it since the 2016, it's hard to find a place that doesn't take it now or through alternative payment methods. Outside of aldi and a couple of places I rarely use a MasterCard/visa
Great deal op. I would apply but I only recently cancelled my Amex Qantas in December 2022 so I wouldn’t be eligible for this because of 18 month waiting period ugh!
Ok see you in July 2024
In the earlier offer through Velocity I got the first and second year in the first month (75000 + 25000 velocity points), plus the chosen bonus of 30000 points though Velocity
I couldn't care less about the free trip or the lounge passes, could I just claim the points and quit before the yearly fee? Similar to the other Virgin credit card offers? Or is this charged on signup to the card.
Cant afford annual fee of 375
