    Was $1149

    🤣

    • +4

      LMAO

    • +30

Kitchenware always has inflated RRP, hence why House can always have a 'closing down' sale.

      • +4

every house showroom i’ve seen are closing down for the last few years 😂

      • +8

Close every night, open every morning, have sale for imminent closing for the next night. I don't see the problem.

    • +9

I am learning new things and how to take positive criticism :)

      • +8

Lifetime guarantee! But don’t tell us it’s not sharp, that’s wear n tear

        • +3

          @bloom

And if it’s broken, that’s obviously evidence of misuse… so not covered either 🙄

      • +1

        Good deal Op, thanks. :)

    • +4

But for $70 bucks that's a good deal for a set like that. Was going to suggest Global knife set for better quality. But still hard to beat $70. Good for gifts.

  • +1

Ok how much are these worth actually? Genuine question.

I would be interested in buying if it's actually a big saving.

    • +12

Assuming it's 420J2 steel like the other iD3 knives, bugger all. $60 isn't bad considering there's a knife block included but don't expect amazing performance, and you'll need to sharpen every 3 months or so to avoid catching blunt knife syndrome.

      • +2

Can you recommend any good sets?

        • +1

          Whats ya budget?

          • +1

@pharkurnell: I guess ~$100 for a chefs knife? I got a knife block so just want to upgrade the main one

  • +3

the RRP is a joke lol

  • +5

So they're reducing it by $1080 and still making a profit?? Why aren't they THIS price (instead of the unrealistic BS RRP) all the time?
I wonder if ANYONE purchased these at the rrp? Lmao jeez i needed a good laugh!

    • +2

Only people with too much $$$ but no (common)cents 😉

      • +2

I don't think they even sell them at RRP. They're on discount everywhere from day 1.

    • +3

Must be close to their expiration date.

  • +4

    Super fugly knife set.

  • +1

    Saying they're a rockwell 53 hardness , trash steel

    • +1

What's a good set to get!?

      • +6

@tony87 you may want a set in a block, and in that case my recommendation is useless, but if you want a really versatile set of knives, I suggest learning to use a proper chef's knife that is of a weight and style that allows you to do almost anything, like the Victorinox broad blade fibrox chef's knife, add some tomato slicing knives as well and you would be a powerhouse. could round it out with a smaller carving knife or santoku or chefs knife. i've included some links below to get you started. Victorinox have a fantastic value proposition for the price and are made in switzerland, they're well regarded and the fibrox handles remain grippy even when wet. they hold an edge quite well, i've found. They probably wont win any awards for appearance, but you will kick ass in the kitchen

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Cooks-Extra-Broad-Blade-Carving/dp…

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Victorinox-180300-0-Tomato-Knife-S…

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Victorinox-Cooks-Knife-5-Blade/dp/…

        • In the first link it says Blade Material - Blade Material 😂

          • @Aloff: LOL!

That’s a fair upgrade on the hardened plasticine they sometimes use…

        • +1

          Amazing thanks!

          • @tony87: no probs, post or PM me if you have any questions

      • +3

Really depends on the sort of cook you are.

I have a huge variety of knives. Best knife IMO is Wustof. Very good quality steel and will last you a lifetime. But expensive even when you get them on sale.

I have 3 Shun knives. Like the smaller ones and they look amazing. But cost even more.

Victorinox are a great value option (although they have gone up in price quite a lot). I used to use these a lot.

Personally my go-to knife that I really like is just a Kiwi knife. I think they call it a Thai Chef's knife. Love it. And the best thing - $8 at my local Asian grocer (vs $38 on Amazon lol). It's fairly soft steel so needs sharpening each time but I really like it. Also have a few of their smaller knives. Like the small Victorinox but with a bit wider blade. About $3 at the grocer.

        • Yeah I’ve got a shun vg10max knife it’s definitely better than my regular knife block set knives

        • +1

Totally agree with the Kiwi knife. My go knife to is the small cleaver type ($15 at Asian grocer) - use it for most of my daily cooking. Have a chefs and santoku knife, but never use them now.

        • +2

I'm still kicking myself for giving my wustof knife block to my dad and watching him throw them all in the knives drawer. They lasted 7 years with me and 7 weeks with him.

          • +1

            @KaptainA: Oh that's so sad.

But why did they only last 7 years with you? Mine are about 5 years old and still look like new.

  • +1

    Where's that 6th.knife hiding? I suppose at $10 per knife it's cheap enough…..

    • +7

6 Piece includes the Knife Block; so 5 Knife + Block.

      • +2

Could be 7 pieces if they included the box it's packaged in!

    • The 6th part is the wooden block.

    • +4

The 6th knife will show up when the chosen one placed the order

  • +1

    thanks….the "95% off" got me….lol

  • Hi OP…any chance of click 'n collect with this deal?

  • for $60 it looks really cool though… the knife stand itself can be easily sold for $99 at the big names (not that it worth that much)

  • +3

Regardless of the inflated RRP, ~$50-60 for a knife set with block is pretty damn cheap, just grab one of those 3 stage sharpeners and you're good.

    • $50-60 for a knife set with block is pretty damn cheap

      But this is $70.

      • They have a clearance sale on, some other sets are $50 + postage.

  • +2

Thanks. We actually need a knife block but you can't actually buy a decent one without buying the knives too. At $60 for the block + w/e knives it comes with it's quite a good deal. If you want a block (even with trash knives) in a normal store you are looking at $100-250.

  • -5

Has this ever been actually sold for $1149? This stuff is junk.

    • +9

No, but I don't think it's ever been sold for $60 either.

  • +50

I feel so stupid. I just bought this last month at the RRP $1,149.

    • +1

🤣 you forgot to add a smiley face!

    • +2

      Surrender your OZB licences!!

    • +2

at least I hope you raked in $114.9 in CashRewards

  • -8

"Engineered and tested to meet Rockwell 53 specification"

i.e. about as hard as a piece of fresh bread - actual decent Japanese knives will be 61 on up, as a general rule

    • +6

So they were honest in what they said regarding specification, and you're negging because this 6 piece knife set thats $60 isn't the same as $300+ knives?

  • +11

This uses 420j2 steel, quick google shows that this is the lowest tier steel when used for cooking due to low sharpness retention and wear resistant. Probably the same quality as kitchen knives from Kmart.

    • +3

But the RRP is $1149.00. Surely they couldn't be making it up.

    • +2

Probably worse. But you do get the block as others have said.

Just get two kiwi knives from Chinese shops and be done

    • But it says they "are crafted from the finest quality specialist hardened Japanese Steel for enduring performance and lasting durability."

They wouldn't have just blatantly and openly lied in their marketing material, would they?

  • -2

    Clearly designed for weeaboos.

  • +5

Baccarat knives are absolute trash. Don't think I have ever seen them for rrp. Also they aren't Damascus steel. The Damascus pattern is prinyon. They say it's "Damascus" inspired.Better offwith Victorinox or Kiwi knifes

    • Kiwi knives are baller.

I've had a thin $5 kiwi nakiri that I bought from an asian grocer about 20 years ago that is still going strong.

  • +4

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/771164 was a good one if you want knives that will stay sharp for a reasonable price, in a nice timber knife block

  • +1

    trasharat

  • +4

    Was $2 million dollars

  • +6

Best used as decoy knives for housemates that won't use a chopping board.

  • Made in china?

  • -3

It's interesting how much hate these knives are getting. One guy even calling them garbage. Aren't we here to upvote and buy on price (And if you don't like the quality don't buy it)? I wasn't aware we were here to judge products and give our opinions.

Here are some things I think are garbage and I would never buy

Are we starting a new website Ozreviews now?

    • +14

I wasn't aware we were here to judge products and give our opinions.

      You must be new here.

    • +3

Get the feeling a lot of the hate is directed at the way they market these with inflated RRP. In house brand no real price comparison available.

      • Yer look that is fair enough. That RRP is bs lol. But aren't all knives like that?

        • Not really.. Global Retail Brands seem have cornered the market on this style.

Most mainstream knives are similarly priced across a range of retailers, and are good value buys when a special or clearance pops up.

This deal is not bad value for the home cook..5 knives and a block for $60.

    • -1

People downvote things based on their politics now.

      • Damn we Twitter now.

    • +1

The thing is we OzBargainers are buy first think later. I was very tempted to buy this and I know nothing about knives.
Thanks for some of the comments and after some research I decided to just buy one good chef knife as I already have a okayish knife block

      • It's not entirely black or white. I'm the first to admit I actually do read the comments to get peoples opinions on products.

I'm probably just a bit miffed because the guy negged it, called it garbage and called out Ozbargainers as idiots for buying garbage because it's marked down.

I think there is a grey area where if you so happen to own the product or have experience with it and make a comment it is helpful.

If you have a knife block I would agree with your decision. I bought this for the knife block not for the knives.

        • So your contention is that "buying garbage because it's marked down" is NOT idiotic? Like, SUPPOSEDLY CHEAP GARBAGE! This really is prototypical OzBargain brilliant stuff.

          • @mickeyjuiceman: No my point is if you have no experience with the product and want to start calling things garbage, well there are a lot more other posts around. Feel free to pop into those too.

            • +1

@MrMoo: I apologise for knowing a decent amount about knives generally, I guess, if that makes you feel validated.

    • The perceived 'value' of a bargain is defined by the quality of the item vs the price.

      • -1

There are too many variables to make this a true statement.

    • +2

I thought the discussion was quite good, it's an efficient way for someone who might not know a great deal about kitchen knives to arrive at a personal conclusion/decision on whether this is:

      1. An absolute bargain
      2. A decent deal
      3. Just a normal item, not really a deal
      4. A terrible deal
