For those churners, the credit provider is NAB/Citi. If you have applied in the last 6 months with Citi, I would suggest to hold.

    • +12

why hold? ive had a few cards with citi with no issues

      • +2

yea had nab and citi within 3 months of each other, no issue. Points awarded for both cases

        • I’ve had NAB, citi and suncorp all back to back and received all the bonus points

Only just cancelled this suncorp card this week

      • +3

Same here. Had NAB then Citi and now Virgin Money, approved every time.

        • I was told by virgin money that after Citi, there's a 6 months rejection period. No issue between Citi and Nab.

          • +1

@Banana: I just closed NAB Qantas rewards premium on 13/04/2023 and currently hold Virgin Money and Suncorp (approved 16/03/2023 and 05/05/2023).

Never held a Citi credit card before but I applied for the prestige in Q4 last year and got rejected.

    • +1

It depends on how their system decides. I have had multiple cards within 6 months with CITI previously, however recently I have had to serve the 6 months waiting period as my applications have been declined by the system straight away.

      • I can confirm this happened to me too. Got declined and there wasn't even any credit enquiries appearing in my credit file.

NAB controls way too many credit card brands in Australia. I'm surprised ACCC had no issues with NAB acquiring Citi's credit card business.

        • +1

Yes can confirm this happened to me as well. Instant decline with no explanantion for the Virgin Money cc and told I need to serve 6 months before I can reapply.

          • +2

@nightelves: Yikes, sending you to prison for that!?

            NAB has gone too far!

        • NAB kill the Citi Global Wallet. what a shame!

    • +5

I discovered and applied for this card a bit over a week ago - took a little while to get the approval over Easter (with minimal to almost no comms from them) but the card is now on it's way apparently

I've recently (since the start of this year) applied for some other NAB/Citi backed cards (NAB Qantas Rewards Premium, Qantas Premier Platinum and now the Suncorp card) and have had no issues with approvals, points, etc

In fact my Qantas Premier Platinum was my fastest bonus points payout ever - applied on 27/03, approved on 28th, card arrived on 1/4, I spent on 3/4 and I got the 60K bonus points on the 6/4 - so just over a week from application to bonus points! - I hadn’t even received/paid the bill yet!

      • wow, that's super quick

      • Were you able to get a refund on the annual fee?

        • I havn't cancelled the card yet - I thought none of the card companies rebated fees anymore (NAB stopped doing it)?

        • +1

I was able to get a pro rata refund. I complained about the app and they agreed to refund the remaining 10 months in my first year. The app is crap - most of the time I couldn't access my transactions or use bpay.

      • If you haven't been charged the annual fee yet, pay off your balance and cancel the credit card!

        • doesn't canceling the credit card incur the annual fee? soz I'm just getting into this but I saw no info that could help with confirming this

        • Huh, points get allocated after 4-8 weeks. Annual fee is charged end of first billing cycle. If you cancel you're agreeing to forfeit any benefits.

      • I would highly recommend checking your credit score as these inquiries affect the score.

        • Not sure why you're getting negged. They do affect the credit score.

HOWEVER - Whether that actually makes a difference to anything in life is debateable…..

    • Citibank home loans also show up as NAB on credit file

  • +11

NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Card is slightly better than this.

    • +9

Good for churners who've gone through NAB already.

      • +2

        agreed

      • ELI5 churning?

        • +3

Signing up to credit cards to get the points and then closing them once you have the points. Then repeat with other banks

          • +2

@illusion99: Do you have to pay the annual fee f you close after getting points?

            • @laudalashun: Yes I think so. Most credit cards will charge the annual fee pretty much straight away anyway.

          • @illusion99: Ahh, I thought it was somehow paying for one CC through another CC and so one. Thank you.

    • Would there be an issue for applying for this and NAB at same time?

      • Think it's fine since it's a different. NAB Rewards vs Suncorp Clear Options

    • too bad i had a NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card back in June. 18 month wait time is a killer.

    • Why? This one got lower fees….

  • Need to be aware that some government charges does not incure points. My council fee payment did not incure points

    • Hmm… did you pay through Sniip?

      • +5

Unless someone is desperate to meet the minimum spend for one of these deals and can't spend elsewhere, the 1.5%~ Sniip charges isn't worth it, most reward programs are 0.5 - 1% value tops.

    • I pay my council rates through BPay via BeemIt

      • +2

Can you pay rent via DEFT BPAY using beemit

        • +1

I pay my rent using my credit card via Beemit

          • @Sambuca: Me too

          • @Sambuca: wait, using BPay? i.e. as a bank transfer?

          • @Sambuca: thanks how much Beemit charge for DEFT rent payment via credit card ?

            • +1

              @Javin: BeemIt doesn't charge anything.

My strata is with DEFT as well and they don't charge anything for BPay payments either.

      • Does this mean the payment on the CC isn’t actually with BPAY and therefore it’s an eligible transaction for bonus points?

        • +1

Yup, it appears on your statement as BeemIt

          • @FirstWizard: Legend - thanks for confirming mate!

I wonder if BPAY payments to Vanguard for index fund investments would also be the same. Has anyone tried this?

            • @Crowing: I don't think so.

You can look up the biller code on BPay website to see if that code allows payments via credit cards. If they say debit only, paying with a credit card will attract a cash advance fee, and will not be eligible for points.

BeemIt even might not let you do it

              • @FirstWizard: Thanks mate - just checked on bpay site and it doesn’t accept credit card as option!

      • If possible you can pay your council rates via Postbillpay (using paypal). Mostly works for me (HSBC being the only exception who didn't give points) and no fees

  • Anything similar with velocity points?

    • +2

yea just did one with citi, 75k velocity points. Minimum spend is stupidly easy to hit thanks to payall.

      • Can you explain this or point me in the right direction? I have two citi applications pending. They are going to be hard one is $2k via apple pay (wtf) and the other is $4k regular.

        • I don't know about the apple pay one, but maybe you can deposit cash into revolut via citi CC, cop the small tx fee and hit that 2k spend, and withdraw back to your acc. And for the 4k one, you just need to set up payall (search payall on ozbargain for instructions).

Good coincidence, I just got my points deposited into velocity today. overall citi card has been the easiest churn of my life, followed by amex, annoying one was virgin money as they are a b*** regarding what counts as valid spend and what doesn't but I ended up spending 2k on woolies/eg fuel cards.

  • +4

Got this card now, for those that care it doesn't work with Google Wallet. Minor annoyance but it does work with Samsung pay and I think Apple pay.

    • Also doesn't work with fitbit pay.

    • +1

damn thats a major inconvenience imo

    • +1

Just got the card onto Google wallet. Maybe it works now? Or just for me

      • Yep works for me now. Must be a new addition because it definitely didn't before. Probably as a result of the NAB takeover.

  • +5

Earn 0.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on Eligible Transactions, capped at $8,000 per Statement Period

Definitely a churn not a keeper.

    • For sure. Whats your Qantas points keeper?

    • ewww 0.5 points per dollar. Churn and burn.

  • Nice, I like ANZ.

  • how much dollar does 70,000 Bonus Qantas Points worth, As of March 2023, a Qantas Point is typically worth between 0.3 cents and 7 cents, depending on how you spend it.

Depends. Normally around 1c is the standard value - just depends on what you use it for.
Flights to Sydney from Perth are $18K points one way or 36K return + some $ for taxes.
But essentially you're getting a $600 flight for 36K in points, which values them closer to 1.7c
Upgrading to business class worth more

    • +1

One way Classic Rewards Business class flight to Singapore ~68,000

    • +1

depends on how you redeem it, I've gotten the best bang for buck with one-way flights, and business class. I recently redeemed 95,000 velocity points (QF carries similar value) on SYD-SFO on United Business, which would've cost me $8,600 one way or $11k return. So in my case, 95,000 points gave me a value of ~ $5500 at a minimum.

      • +2

Yeh but pretend for a moment that there was such a thing as "reverse upgrade" and the airline offered you a sum to bump you down to economy for that flight. I'm going to guess that you would be tempted by a sum that was a fair bit less than the difference in cash price between economy and business.

        • +3

it's late and I'm slow, but I'm not following this at all…

          • +3

@philldo: I am just making the point that the value of points is very subjective. It is not what the cash price of a business flight is. In the above example a one way 12 hour flight is $5k. Now I am sure there are people in the world who do pay that, but it's the exception.

Me personally, I'd never pay $5k. I'd maybe pay $2k. So you see, very subjective.

            • +2

@endolphin: The appeal is subjective, the financial value is objective. you save $X for Y points. whether or not it is worth $X is irrelevant - purely individual choice, no? Otherwise you can make the arugment for everything, its essentially meaningless

            • +1

@endolphin: I get ya, but personally I wouldn't be paying 12k for a flight unless it was peanuts to me, where I would not care if an airline (hypothetically) gave me 10k to downgrade to economy & sacrifice my comfort.

I don't think subjectivity is a good way to look at it… The price of the flight is non-negotiable and set by the airline based on many factors, if an airline can charge 12k for a return flight, they absolutely will. To me, it's 5k value as I don't have the option to buy it at 2k - but I do have the option of using points. So it's a very simple valuation method, and I believe it's how most reward travellers value it.

              • +1

@Wimothy Jongingtons: Well, they shouldn't. By your logic ozbargainers should be prepared to pay up to 5c per point (in surcharges, fees, whatever) because they are getting that much "value" from their points…

I've used points to fly business to Europe return. Total cost was 350k velocity plus $200. Including the opportunity cost of the points (which I could sell for 1c) made the flight cost $3700. That compared with an economy flight around $1800. Now, I don't regret my choice, but it's not lost on me that I could have put up with economy and had nearly $2k extra in my pocket. But, yolo, whatever, I could afford to treat myself on that occasion. But I'm not sure about next time.

BTW, whatever that business flight would have cost in cash (and I don't even know) is not relevant to me.

                • +1

                  @endolphin: I see your perspective 👍 fair.

                • @endolphin: THIS!

I could fly Business to Singapore, around $2,200 in pts value.

I can fly return for $1,000.

It's a short flight, and to be honest $1,200 in my pocket may be better!

    • +1

I've just booked Sicily-London-Dubai business with British Airways for 75k points and $300.

New York to Lima business with Latam Air for 75k points and $63.

  • +2

Westpac Qantas / Velocity Platinum is a good one if you need to dodge NAB.
    - 70k velocity OR qantas points with $4k spend in 90 days.
    - $49 annual fee for the first year if you are already a westpac customer (just open an account and set up a monthly $2k in-out transfer)
    - There is an additional annual fee component for the QF / VA points side of things.
    - Comes with pretty decent free travel insurance provided by Allianz.
    - Access Shopback Westpac lounge by becoming a westpac customer.

    • I don't understand why westpac seems to be the only one out of all the banks/credit companies to make you verify your ID in branch during business hours though instead of solely online when you're opening an account with them for the first time. Happened to not only myself but relatives I convinced to sign up for the bonus points over the years.

      • It was all digital for me.

        • And also the only bank that requires you to go in-branch as well to close your basic choice account instead of having an option online. Didn't bother keeping it since I was still able to get the existing customer discount the second and subsequent years as they let you keep your customer ID and logins.

  • Damn, already applied for this card with suncorp 120,000 points 1 month ago. Did not realize this deal was on..sigh…

    • +1

The 120k with Suncorp has a cheaper annual fee than this one.

  • +1

What's the impact on regularly signing up to different credit cards for points in terms of credit score etc?

    • I've found it sometimes can dip slightly soon after being approved but overall over a handful of years of churning my credit score has gone up a little over time

      • What's a slight dip like?

        • +2

          Equifax: 960 -> 951 -> 947 (after 2 cards recently)
          Experian: 823 -> 818
So basically negligible - and if I don't get a new card the score will go back up pretty soon

          • @Remorhaz: Wow, that really is slight dip. I only have about 4 years of credit history and less than 2 years of credit repayment record, mine drops by 50-70 with any application. This is when I have no missed payments.

    • +1

Found it actually went up with the new credit reporting system. I'm considered an exception person to lend to vs being poor at the start of this year.

  • +1

where is the info for existing suncorp customers ?

  • This is the only card I've been rejected for. I'd watch out if your a churner and a burner.

    • I had the same problem with Suncorp. They "decisioned" me.

    • Did you already churn through NAB or Citi earlier this year as per the comments above?

      • yeh probs.

This was the last time they had this offer 18 months ago
