FYI: If you're specifically after the TCN Party card (which is redeemable at JB Hi-Fi), it is also 10% off at Coles this week. This is good if you hit your limits or want a straight discount.

  • 20x EDR points or 10% straight discount at Coles?

    • EDR if you want Qantas, otherwise 10%

      • Book before July

    • Depends on your amount
Are you ok with $30-$50 gcs?

  • Is there a way to check merchant codes for purchases I've previously made?

    • You will most likely need to contact your card issuer and see whether they are able or willing to tell you this information.

Selected cards (e.g. digital TCN gift cards operating on the Mastercard or Visa networks, Hiver Bank's Visa debit card) will show you the MCC through online banking and/or mobile app.

      • Thanks very much. Looks like risking it with a small amount first is what I'm going to have to do.

  • Thanks OP. The TCN Good Food can be converted to digital unlike the one sold at Coles, I think?

    • +4

All physical TCN Good Food gift cards can now be converted into digital TCN Good Food gift cards through the TCN Good Food website, regardless of whether it was purchased from Coles, Woolworths or elsewhere. That means if you bought any at 15% off during last year's Black Friday sale at Coles, you can now convert to digital.

It worked! And It's easy to convert, thanks. The physical TCN Good Food is 9/10 failed at a random restaurant so not worth it. Go digital is much better.

        • Same. I had the TCN restaurant and get rejected almost all restaurant. How you pay if your bill is $120 but you only have $100 GC?

          • @oyespek: I'd ask for a split payment in that case. I can't think of other ways.

      • Can TCN Pub and Bar physical card be also converted to digital?

        • Yes, you can do this on the TCN Pub & Bar website linked in the table in the deal description.

  • Does it apply to variable load card?

  • can the good food cards be used at Cafe's ?

    • Yes

    • +2

It depends on a couple of factors.

      1. The MCC assigned to the café.

I would have thought that cafés are supposed to use MCC 5812 (Eating Places and Restaurants), but I just had a look at Mastercard's MCC manual and they actually say cafés are supposed to be classified as MCC 5814 (Fast Food Restaurants):

Merchants that sell prepared food and beverages for immediate consumption either on the premises or packaged for carry-out. Fast food restaurants may or may not operate a drive-up window for ordering and pick-up, and may or may not provide table service by a waiter or waitress. In any case, orders are paid for at the counter or at a drive-up window. Fast food restaurants include cafes, cafeterias, grills, coffee shops, diners, pizza parlors, sandwich bars or shops, deli shops, and snack shops. If table service is provided, a gratuity may be added to the bill. Such merchants generally do not sell alcoholic beverages.

Having said that, in reality, who knows how the café you go to has been classified. I have seen cafés use MCC 5812, MCC 5814 and MCC 5462 (Bakeries), and I reason I point this out is that out of these three MCCs, the only one officially permitted on the TCN Good Food gift card is MCC 5812.

      2. Whether the café chooses to accept TCN Good Food gift cards as a payment method.

Assuming the café you go to uses the correct MCC:

      • If you have the physical gift card, you can only use it at cafés that accept swipe (magstripe) payments from eftpos cards. Most EFTPOS terminals I have seen lately still have magstripe readers, but (for example) Zeller has a newer EFTPOS terminal that has no magstripe reader, and I have seen one recently at a café. Additionally, if the café uses Square EFTPOS terminals, those will not process swipe payments from eftpos cards, because Square chooses to not support this. Additionally, cannot use the physical gift card for any payments through a website (e.g. ordering through a QR code at the table).

      • If you have the digital gift card, you can only use it at cafés that either accept payments from a mobile wallet or directly on a website. Keep in mind that some websites will reject the digital gift card, because they do not support 3-D Secure and are therefore a "less secure" payment method. You can get around this by using Apple Pay or Google Pay at the online checkout (where this is supported).

    No OW, No Good

  • Good Food can be used at Nando's?

    • +1

      I doubt it.

The only report of Nando's MCC I have seen was one nearly three years ago, where a store in Brisbane reportedly used MCC 5814 (Fast Food Restaurants). MCCs can change over time, but MCC 5814 sounds like the MCC Nando's is supposed to use.

The TCN Good Food gift card officially does not support MCC 5814, plus there have been multiple reports (with the last one in July 2024, apparently) of the TCN Good Food gift card declining transactions at merchants using MCC 5814.

  • Excuse me. A little behind the times. So the TCN Good Food GC’s, can be used similar to the TCN Restaurant GC’s? Previously Good Food GC’s needed to be used at selected restaurants named on the Good Food website.
