I would recommend not buying a "Vertuo" pod machine. These use special Nespresso patented pods only. Better to buy a standard pod machine.

Apparently, this is marketed to people who enjoy drinking 400mL of coffee in one go; who these people are, nobody knows. But yes, this only exists because anyone can make pods for the OL machines.

What is the difference between the vertuo pods and normal? Other than the shape obviously. In what ways are they better?

Better to buy the standard pod machine as you can get pods from other manufacturers. Taste-wise they're pretty much the same.

Vertuo makes bigger cups which I've really liked since switching over. What others are saying about choice (being able to buy from other manufacturers) is true, but for me, I don't think I'd go back from Vertuo to original pod machines now. Just my take though!

To answer your question; the vertuo pods have a barcode around the outside so each 'style' of pod can have the correct extraction occur. For example, if you wanted a long black there are special long black pods, a flat white - use a flat white pod, and the correct volume etc will be applied. With this there is no need to have the extra buttons with espresso or lungo amounts, it's all calculated from the inserted pod.

      • Thanks for the info. We have a standard Nespresso pod machine for use in our caravan. It is a little annoying that the shot lengths aren’t quite right for the type of drink you want to make. So this could be tempting.

  • I think this is a better deal, plus it uses the standard pods… https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/nespresso-essenza-mini-solo-c…

    • I think the best deal is a subscription. Sure, you are locked into buying the pods from them for 2 years, but personally i prefer their pods. Plus you can get the machine for net to nothing and you only spend what you would normally spend on coffee anyway.

      • Good point. I didn’t think of that option!

      • If your drinking enough to justify a subscription, why not just get a Delonghi/Jura automatic machine and get beans instead?

        • Because a subscription makes the machine, at times, substantially cheaper

          • @Rockgod70: Just compared Nespresso subscription to buying this machine.
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/767767

If you use premium Airjo beans it will take you 376 days to break even
If you use Aldi beans it will take you 320 days to break even

So I think the big advantage of a subscription is the smaller upfront cost and if the Nespresso machine breaks you can just chuck it out, Delonghi machine may be expensive to repair after 2 year warranty expires.
