Anko Hand-Powered Espresso Coffee Maker $14 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store/ OnePass/ $65 Order) @ Kmart

220

Picked one of these up while on holiday. It takes both nespresso pods and ground coffee.

Build quality is good, and makes decent Coffee from the ground coffee (haven't tried pods yet). I picked up one of the kmart blade style grinders too and it works surprisingly well.

The main disadvantage is it does 1 shot at a time, so need to refill the basket and water to double up.

  • how many grams of coffee the basket can take?

    • Not much and i dont have any scales. Looks similar to a pos - maybe 5-8g?

I would strongly recommend either an Aeropress, or a V60/other pourover before something like this.

I would also strongly recommend not wasting money on a blade grinder, and either buying pre-ground coffee from a local roaster (if you're really budget constrained) or getting a burr grinder from Timemore, Kingrinder, 1zpresso etc.

    • +3

I have a burr grinder (and Aeropress) at home, but wanted to try this out for espresso. I would say it is more of a pod style espresso than a proper machine with unpressurised basket.

This does a better job than i was expecting actually (as with the grinder).

      • You should add that to the description. And quotemark Kmart's description to distinguish it from yours.

    • +1

100% what this guy said, I’ve wasted a lot of money on coffee gadgets and aeropress is the way (as is buying your coffee from places that pre-grind it specifically to aeropress grind level)

    • Unless I'm mistaken, this basically is an Aeropress. The concept of a manual espresso press is not new, aeropress is just a convenient form factor for it - and this seems to be the same.

      • Not exactly. I haven’t used the Anko version but I’d bet it doesn’t generate the correct amount of pressure or filter the liquid correctly for a good cup of coffee (compare to aeropress). But that’s my assumption though.

        • +1

It’s also $15 as opposed to $65. Obviously you’d expect more from the Aeropress.

      • +1

No, this is not like Aeropress.

Aeropress is a hybrid between an immersion and pressurized percolation brewing. Closer to immersion brewing.

This is pressurized percolation. This is more like a Staresso (copy of), Minipresso/Nanopresso, etc - manual pump espresso makers. Not sure the amount of pressure that it can build up, but probably quite a bit more than an Aeropress can (without a lot of hacking - there is someone who has achieved "espresso" pressures in an Aeropress on youtube, but that is a level of insanity that is beyond a normal person!).

I saw this a few weeks ago and did some research. The only specific review I could find was from a chick in NZ and she was pretty thorough. Overall have it a positive review. Didn't buy it because I have aeropress, delter press and multiple stove tops, but still might!

    • +2

Same as me. My wife had a go at me for buying yet another coffee device…

    • She said the attached cup tainted the brew.

I wouldn't call that review thorough or good.

  • I am interested to know the POD function, and how about cleaning? It seems a lot of parts to clean.
I am thinking of getting one of these for work as work only provides American black coffee…..

    • +1

Simply rinse it out, allow it to dry then pop back together

    • +1

The NZ review complained about cleaning but i dont find it much more hassle than aeropress. The main additionl step is pumping some water through the main part after use.

See the manual on the webpage for more info.

      • +1

aeropress's the easiest cleanup of any coffee making method by far imo, short of instant (which obv doesn't count)

  • I have owned a similar unit (staresso) and It was very fiddly and messy to make coffee with ground beans, however for 15 dollars it would be worth a try. This is perfect for anyone who likes pods.

  • -3

Isn’t this just a fancy plunger?

    • +1

      Short answer: no

    • +3

      Not really fancy…
This and other aeropress style devices push the water through the coffee, as opposed to a plunger that mixes the coffee and water together then strains the grinds out.

I haven't used this one, but the aeropress is much superior to a plunger, in taste and for not getting grinds in the cup.

      • Thanks for clarifying

      • +3

in addition to this, the hand pump is supposed to allow you to build a little bit of pressure before the water is released to the coffee. A little bit like espresso, albeit with much lower pressure. Like everyone else, i have something like this and it works very well and produce really good coffee. but again the trouble is it only makes a shot a time. so for our personal use we need to brew it 4 times to get a decent size for 2.
as for the pod, if this works the same, it should have some sort of reusable pod to use with your own coffee, or take it out and use a pod instead.
Cleaning is pretty easy, you need to wash the brew part, the reusable pod and the cup if you use the cup. probably a 15-30 sec job.

  • +1

Huge shoutout for Picopresso if you can afford it, can be bought for as little as $150. Can do doubles with it, I take it on holiday and buy a bag of ground, locally roasted coffee.

  • +2

It's the poor man's version of the staresso. Workings amazingly well for $14. Good for camping and travelling.

  • +3

    Thanks for posting…

Pair this with the Kmart coffee grinder for the win !!!!

    • @jv That's a grater.
      I think you're looking for a grinder(NSFW)

    • Look at the crema in that promo image lol.

      • Why did they hire a narrator with an East Asian accent for the video? Do they figure that's their market?

      • Crema is coffee scum.

If you get your hands on 100% Robusta it pulls shots like this and tastes like bitter ashy summernats.

  • Machines like this are just too fiddly, If you want a portable espresso machine, get a Uniterra Nomad. It makes better coffee than $500 Brevilles.

    • With a RRP of $550 you’d hope it’s in the ballpark of a $500 Breville.

      • I said better. I'd actually say it makes coffee on a par with a $1200 machine.

  • But this machine "Produces delicious flavour with thicker cream"😆😆

    • I think it's a mistranslation from "crema" which makes sense when you consider that crema is the French/Spanish word for cream.

      • Yep, that was my point. I think when highlighting the features of a coffee maker, then it would be advisable to get these details correct. It instills confidence in the product 😃

      • *Italian

French for cream is crème (and Spanish is irrelevant in this context).

  • +1

Saw this the other week and was thinking about it for camping instead of the percolator.

I guess it'll be a lot more work in the end pulling multiple shots.. figured I'd wait and see if it dropped to $5 or something as a sign ;)

Although I have big enough batteries and inverter that I could dust off the old pod machine and take that instead

    • Kmart have a coffee machine for $79. I'm actually thinking about it solely for camping.
It's only 1100w so not too stressful on the batteries etc.

  • +1

I bought one of these machines
I am using Starbucks capsules but I am having problems in that the bottom foil end of the pod isnt being perforated and I just get mainly water in the cup.
Is the pump pressure too low or are there any other suggestions?
I will try a different brand of pods.
    Thanks

    • Keep us posted on how you go with other pods!

      • +2

I've ordered one to give it a whirl with genuine Nespresso pods. Will advise how I go when it arrives!

        • OK my OnePass delivery arrived last night. Box was damaged, open, dust and finger prints on cup and part missing to puncture the pod. Took it back and replaced for sealed box today.

Have made a couple of test brews this morning. All worked well. Went slightly below the MAX line for water filling but this doesn't extract quite as much out of the pod as my powered Nespresso machine. Estimate 75% comparative extraction? Stil tasted great and impressive for the $.

Tritan cup holds two full shots to the brim. Slightly messy clean-up but overall very happy. Box came with two replacement silicone rings for the pressure pump part so prob unlikely to last for that long but will see how we go! Will prob grab a couple of extras at this $14 price.

  • Part is missing:
    Coffee Powder Container Cover
Followed instructions up to "Coffee Powder Container"…

    • +2

This part on mine was firmly stuck to the underside of the 'top' part. Must be removed (ie yanked out by hand) as it is stuck firmly from the factory. Has to be taken out completely for the Nespresso pod container to work properly. Took me a while to work out why it wouldn't screw together- definitely not clear in the instructions.

      • +2

        Thanks for that👍
No wonder pod container wouldn't fit in for you! We both learnt from that.

Had seen a rubber fitting there, but thought that was not it.

        After your advice…
Prised out gently with small screwdriver around edge
        Was firmly stuck in!

        Obvious now🤔
It's a soft black rubber cover with numerous holes in middle.

        Will try again☕

  • Impressed with this for the low price👍
Using ground beans - made a good tasting coffee with a nice crema.

Better than my old moka pot, French press, & pod machine.
    Easier to take camping.

Expected would be returning it as useless… It's a keeper!

    • +1

Fwiw, it would be a pressurized basket (well, the Staresso is, so surely this $14 knockoff is as well!), so it's fake crema.

If it's a good copy of the Staresso, then it should be a bargain for making drinkable coffee from pre-ground! (I've never used a Staresso, but I had a Nanopresso, and they are supposedly comparable - albeit, the Nanopresso can be de-pressurized, while I'm not sure whether the Staresso can.)

      • +1

Not a coffee enthusiast - just tastes good to me😉

Suits my minimal coffee consumption. Cheap, takes up little space & portable✅

        • +1

Yeah for sure - no judgement here! Everyone should enjoy what they enjoy! :)

And pressurized is probably the better way to go, if you are using pre-ground.

It's crazy how cheap this is! 5-10 years ago, you would be spending $100-$150 to get espresso like this. $14 is insane.

          • @caprimulgus: Thanks for your non-judgemental advice😉 Always learning.

Not having a taste for better coffee has saved me a fortune over the years💰
Several good coffee shops within 10 min walk - so I'm told.

Far better than expected for price.
With this - think I'll drink more than my 1 cup/d max.

  • +1

I bought this yesterday and feel like it is one of the best ways to spend $14 if you are a coffee drinker!

I recently bought this, for around $25 delivered. Tried it out and it is a useless piece of junk. With both pods and ground coffee.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CL1D8YQ4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_f…

This Kmart unit is excellent for both pods and ground coffee. Surprised at the quality of the unit and the shot it produced. Perfect for camping, no longer want to buy a cheap espresso machine as this thing will more than do the job. I immediately bought a couple more for spares.

NOTE: Do not place any parts of the product in the dishwasher! This will destroy the product.
    ● Once you have finished using the product, remove the used coffee capsule or ground coffee from the adaptor.
    ● Reassemble the product and pour cold water into the water tank and press the pump up and down with your hand. (Compression frequency should be at a consistent fast pace). This will help to clean out the adaptor.
    ● Disassemble the product and wash all detachable parts with warm soapy water and ensure to rinse thoroughly with clean water.
    ● Ensure all parts are clean and dry before storing.
    ● There is a detachable seal ring in the capsule container, clean it after use.
