Sounds like you'll need to factor in this:

    • 75%+ battery is ok for a bit longer

      • +3

Sure, a bit. But you'll see that replacement is easy. I would not touch an older Surface or other devices that are sealed.

    • +2

Where are you buying your replacement batteries for T series laptops in general? I need batteries for a few models (T480, T470p, T440) and don't particularly trust the sellers i'm seeing.

    • +1

      Replacing the battery is easy,
Sourcing a battery thats 90-100% original capacity is the challenge.

My experience is - if you are not buying OEM (they are difficult or impossible to get for older laptops) you get 70-80% capacity.

      • That's no good. The ads claim original, or close to it. Have you been able to get refunds on Amazon or ebay?

Though with the high battery life on these, 80% is OK if it holds close for a couple of years.

        • +1

its difficult to get a refund because they always start the same story about: "needs calibration - cycle it a couple of times. But don't discharge fully and dont charge fully." and then when you get back to them later after a couple of weeks of use they give you a new runaround. I got refunded once on eBay, because the Lenovo Vantage software showed about 75% capacity, but that wasn't enough, when I finally got a message in Vantage that the battery is not genuine and wont be charged for safety reasons is when I got a refund. :|
I bought a MacBook Pro battery from Amazon, and that one is like maybe 60% original capacity. But its difficult to prove, because I cant get good data off the Mac. It takes 6-7 hours to charge fully. But I'm too annoyed already to take it out and start a refund, because in all likelihood other batteries on market for this old model are in similar state.

My lesson is you ae better off with a 75% original battery than trying your luck with one on ebay /amazon.

  • Screen nits ?

    • +1

The screen isn't great on this model, according to reviews.
But it's a touch screen, so I ordered one to replace my old Yoga.

      • I ordered the 830 G5 yesterday and found out it is only 220nits. I haven't recieved the laptop yet, neither use a 220nits laptop. I'm not too sure about this T480s brightness

  • @untech Does it have backlit keyboard?

  • Can you turn off the touch screen via the BIOS?

    • +2

I don't think you can do it in BIOS, but you should be able to disable the touch screen driver in Windows.

      • Thank you

      • +1

I believe there is no option in the BIOS to enable/disable the touchscreen functionality, however there are several ways to do it in Windows, and these happen to work on most Windows machines that have a touchscreen.

These methods use Powershell to do the exact same thing as disabling the touchscreen device in Device Manager.

        To disable touch: (Admin Powershell)
        Get-PnpDevice -PresentOnly -Class "HIDClass" | Where-Object {$_.'FriendlyName' -like "*HID-compliant touch screen*"} | Disable-PnpDevice

        To enable touch: (Admin Powershell)
        Get-PnpDevice -PresentOnly -Class "HIDClass" | Where-Object {$_.'FriendlyName' -like "*HID-compliant touch screen*"} | Enable-PnpDevice

The commands ask windows for devices that are HID (Human Interface Device) and have a name containing "HID-compliant touch screen" (Basically the default windows driver for touchscreens), and for each device windows provides for that query it tells windows to disable that particular device.

I'd recommend that if you use this method that you save each of those commands into files named something like DisableTouchscreen.ps1 and EnableTouchscreen.ps1 so that you don't lose or forget them.
(.ps1 is the file extension for powershell scripts)

You can do other things such as swapping the FN and CTRL keys; whether the default is F1-F12 or the pictured action; if you have to hold down the modifier key or whether it behaves as a function-lock; etc. via the BIOS and also via a couple of utilities that Lenovo provides for download on the product support page.

Lenovo also provides special vendor-specific powershell commandlets to interact with the UEFI BIOS of their branded machines.

A little on the pricier side for a 4+ year old laptop, but considering the 16GB RAM & the store policy of being able to return them with a few days if unsatisfied with the grade, seems like a decent deal.

  • Thx OP just bought one after missing out on the last deal.

  • +1

Received mine yesterday, pretty happy. There are a few scratches on the lid, but not very noticeable.
The laptop was running a bit hot and noisy, I had to change the thermal grease. Now it's cool and silent.
SSD health 92%. Battery condition isn't too bad, after 2 hours of youtube it had about 60% juice left.
The only cons is that it came with 8GB soldered RAM + 8GB SODIMM. I was hoping to install 8GB more, but now I'll have to buy a new 16GB stick.

Is screen brightness ok considering the above comments about low nits? What do you use the laptop for mainly?

      • +1

It's bright enough for me, I'm using it indoors for programming mostly.

        • Did they charge you $16.90 for delivery?
