Are they part of the free upgrade from FTTN to FTTP?

    • +2
      • +1

Copy paste from what Spintel has replied to me about the upgrade. "As of now, upgrade to FTTP is currently not offered due to NBN speed requirement. We will definitely notify you once it's available"

        • +5

That is because SpinTel doesn't sell 250Mbps to meet nbn's minimum requirement for FTTC to FTTP. If your FTTC location is ready for FTTP you can go with anyone else that sells 250Mbps and Gigabit. Check here.

SpinTel does do 100Mbps which is the minimum requirement for the FTTN to FTTP changeover.

          • +1

@Twix: I wonder why the FTTN to FTTP is a lower plan? The install would cost more and once installed the achievable speeds will be the same.

            • +1

@serpserpserp: Most FTTN services cannot attain 100mbps. FTTC should almost always do 100mbps.

              • @kipps: To get the free upgrade, you go on the plan after it is installed. Therefore going from FTTN to FTTP you should get full speeds.

            • @serpserpserp: What kipps said. I'm not sure if there are any other reasons.

    • -3

Are they part of the free upgrade from FTTN to FTTP?

      Not with a 100/20 plan…

      • +1

JV, following Twix's link it says it is (fttc->fttp wouldnt be though).

        https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/upgrades/fttp-upgrade-w…
        https://www.nbnco.com.au/learn/speed#home-fast
"During a typical busy period, download speeds should reach at least 60Mbps*."

I trust your input over anything i read on nbn site though so double checking.

        • +5

          my bad…

          fttc->fttp wouldnt be though

          That's what I was thinking of…

I had to upgrade to a 250 plan to get FTTP for free.

          • +1

@jv: Cheers for the clarification. According to the site my area is currently being upgraded so with any luck I can join you soon.

So that's how you get your comments in so quickly

Yes, I'm using the new batch upload feature.

              It's in Beta.

  • +2

Damn great price, but im just finishing my 6 month promo period with Spintel so not an option for me

    • How did you find the service? I'm considering joining

      • I've used them several times in the past. Great service. Support is OK, but not bad.

      • +10

Not good for gaming. im on the black friday special still. Only server is in sydney. i get high latency and low dl speeds during peak. fine for netflix and everything else.

        • Ok. I didnt know about gaming issue with different provider. Now that u have mentioned i am getting almost double the ping in call of duty than before. Is there a way to fix it or i have tonswitch provider. I am in Adelaide.

          • +1

@Safoan: Have to go with a provider that has a poi closer to you. Best to go with a reputable provider like superloop ausbb etc.

            • @fozz4211: I was with superloop before. Will switch again i guess. how do u find out which providers have poi in Adelaide?

              • +3

@Safoan: The correct term is actually Point of Presence (PoP). The point of interconnect (POI) is the connection between NBN and your provider, whereas the PoP is what connects your provider to the Internet and other networks. Since Spintel only has 1 PoP in Sydney, literally anything you do has to go through there. Eg. If you have to connect to a server or to players in Adelaide, your connection has to go Adelaide>Sydney>Adelaide.

You can get a good idea of who has a POP in Adelaide with this peering list
                https://www.peeringdb.com/ix/691
Note providers can rent out other provider's networks, so it's a bit hard to tell unless they are a big player. Some are also listed under different names (eg. X Integration is actually Leaptel)

      • +8

When I signed up a couple months ago for a similar deal i wanted to pull my hair out support was so bad. I was only getting 10/2 isntead of 100/20.
It was eventually resolved, but now I get random internet drops a couple times a week which never happened when i was with Aussie.
I'll probably be going back to Aussie after this.

        • +1

I get random dropouts as well, maybe once or twice every fortnight

        • +2

I get random dropouts as well, happened twice today alone.

I had to restarted the router. The family complains that it's too slow sometimes.

        • +2

Same…way more dropouts than my previous plan with TPG.

        • +2

I have dropouts as well and takes a while to resolve every time. I had to tether when it happens.

      • It’s my 4th month with Spintel this time with the 50/20 plan. Generally very close to advertising speed. Moving to AGL due to $49 for 12 mon promo.

      • I signed up on the Black Friday deal last year, get 90+mbps most of the time, even through peak and I haven't noticed the latency being overly bad, usually around 40ms and I'm all the way up in Townsville.

      • I'm on this plan from November last year. I'm in Sydney and most of the time speed is between 70-80mbps. Only occasionally it goes past 80mbps. Also, I've had way more dropouts compared to my previous plan with TPG.

      • You should ideally be looking at feedback from people on the same POI.

        https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/nbn-poi/

I can't find their network map so don't know which POP they use. If they have 1 in a different state then all your connection needs to go there before it can exist out to the wider net (increased ping).

Don't even think they have a looking glass server to see the routing.

People are saying one pop in Sydney and backhaul provided by Optus. Would be painful for people from say the WA

        • +5

For anyone not living in Sydney I would avoid them. They only have the one POP in Sydney and in Melbourne and Brisbane expect 25 to 40ms ping and even worse in WA.
They are an ultra budget ISP from a network perspective, so don't expect the same performance as other providers.
If you are okay with that latency, then go for it.

      • I'm with spintel and I noticed occassional drop out during Teams call during the day (never had this experience when I was with superloop).

Furthermore, they have CGNAT, thus if you after a port forwarding, you would need to pay extra.

My current location is Melbourne, but when I did where is my ip, it shows Sydney

  • +4

Their speeds and stability isnt as great as ABB or Superloop, but cant really complain at 49 pm for 100/20

    • +8

      Singed up during last deal
Zero dropouts and getting the advertised speed.
      Lower ping than Belong, too.
I'd like a static IP without having to pay an extra $11p/m but overall I'm a happy customer.

      • +2

$11 😳, that's rip off for static IP
With Exetel atm and Very happy with them as they provide good speed plus the static IP for free, there is also an option for getting 5 BOOST for a month to a higher speed bracket, out of the first 6 months promo period so paying ~$64 as I get $5 discount for referring a friend the Exetel service.

        • Once my superloop referral bonuses die off, I'm going to go exetel. Shouldn't be too different from what I'm used too.

Would also love the speed boosts.

    • +6

Last I checked its because one of the ways they cut costs is they only route through Sydney.
So those people will have a good time.
Everyone else will get an extra 10-20ms ping if you game. (unless somethings changed recently)

      • How can I check? I’m with Launtel atm and would be keen to switch for this price.

        • +3

Basically if you don't live in Sydney -> extra ping delay
If you do, ping should be fine.

        • +4

Don't touch them if you don't live in Sydney and are a gamer. I learnt the hard way. Latency+++

      • +1

I'm in Sydney. Does that mean I will get good speeds?

        • I’m in Sydney, been with Spintel for a year now, no issues. I’m not a gamer but use Teams video calls extensively for work.

  • not available at my address for some reason (any plan on spintel)

  • +3

Had this deal and cancelled after 3 weeks. Seems if you live in WA its just very poor speeds. My speeds were just so erratic.

    • +5

SpinTel traffic goes back to Sydney and they use Optus for their backhaul.

    • +6

Me too but in Adelaide. Worst ISP I've ever used. I was getting packet loss so high that it was virtually unusable. Not just for gaming but web browsing in general. After changing to a different provider it was perfect, so it wasn't a hardware issue.

    • +4

Same here. The worst ISP I have been with. Left the first possible opportunity I could and moved to Exetel. Best decision and a good price.

      • +1

        I done the same ;)

        • I'm exetel atm and they are great

  • +1

Signed up from last time. On FTTP, it's fine during the day but at night I'm getting ping spikes and latency.

  • Wish you could pay a little extra to get 40 upload

  • +12

From the last deal, some customers were asked to upload a photo ID

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13005341/redir

  • +17

I live in Victoria and cancelled the Spintel service on the very same day after noticing poor ping, delayed latency and overall internet speed. I wouldn't go back to them even if they offer the service for free.
Now I'm much happier with Exetel.

    • +1

Knew there was a catch with spintel

    • +4

Just remember with Exetel you need to give 30 days notice before you churn to another provider. If you churn immediately they will still charge the additional month. For that reason I will not go back to them

      • That's why I said "never again" to Spintel years ago! Wonder if that's still their policy as well.

        • when i churned to Aus Post, i didn't have to give them 30 days. i think i only gave them 2 days, which coincided with that month's billing period ending.

    • Would've been good for us here to see some traceroutes.

  • +1

Can you schedule the connection 2-3 months in the future ?

    • following this as i'm interested as well

  • I have never had NBN before.

    Any suggestions for a FTTN/FTTP compatible modem/router?

    • +1

      Netgear nighthawk D7000

      • +1

That's a dinosaur, have one lying around. Didn't know you can still get them!

        • Had like the V1. They ruined if with subsequent firmware releases. Wans't stable at ALL.

Don't know what's happened since but definitely wouldn't recommend it.

Much happier with the Telstra smart modem 2 (Arcadyan model). Currently 952 hours (40 days) of uptime. Something the night hawk could only DREAM about achieving.

        • Hahaha, I have been using it for last 2 years, what should upgrade into as an NBN ready Modem?

    • +3

      Asus RT-AX86U

      • I think that's just Router, where the question was for the FTTN/FTTP compatible modem/router!

        • It really depends if it's for FTTP or FTTN.
FTTP does not require the modem part, FTTN does.

          • @wangasm: NBN provides you with the modem? You just plug in a router

            • @serpserpserp: "Modem" in this case refers to a VDSL2 compatible device which is required for FTTN and FTTB connections.
NBN do not provide these, you will have to purchase your own or obtain from your RSP for these connection types.

You're referring to the NTD/connection box. Yes, NBN provides this for HFC, FTTC and FTTP connections, so all you need is a router.

              https://hbbsupport.superloop.com/hc/en-au/articles/150000207…

I understand the confusion though, many retailers annoyingly use all these terms interchangeably when they are really not the same.

  • So if I'm in WA am i actually going to get even 25Mbps?

Serious question. That's all my house will do, even after rewiring the internals. So I'm just looking at $49 as a cheap 25Mbps plan, but i want it to be hassle free. I don't game.

    • If you are a commonwealth bank customer more.com.au will do 25Mbs for 46.20 per month for 12 months. I opened a fee free credit card to take advantage of this and am getting good speeds in Perth.

    • +3

Not just about the speeds but your latency all the way to their POP in Sydney is terrible, so it'll feel slow either way. They are cheap for a reason. They barely have a network. 99% of other ISP's have 132 POP's +, Spintel has 1 in Sydney.
Outside Sydney will mean latency, packet loss and drop outs.

      • You are getting confused with PoPs and POIs. Good RSP's with have at least 1 PoP in each state. Cheap RSP's will have 1 for whole of Aus. Most RSP's service all of the 130+ POIs.

    • +1

If you get a decent Vodafone signal, think about substituting Felix for NBN. $35 a month, no hassles. Overcome the 10 devices tethering limit by connecting the phone to a travel router via USB.

  • "new registrations" I assume they mean you haven't been with them for the last 6 months? And never mind. Not available in my area. w00t.

  • -1

Valentine’s Day be like smashing Corn Hub at home at lighting speed

  • +24

Just cancelled Spintel after barely 2 months despite the great price. Very poor download speeds and even worse uploads (on average around 3-5 Mbps) on FTTP in Melbs. Terrible ping if this matters to you. I'd look elsewhere.

    • Superloop (who I'm with) doesn't have a pop here and my connections seem to be going out from Brissie after hitting the data centre here but I believe their superior network more than makes up for it.

  • Dam that's some really nice price for the speeds. Definitely competing 5G home internet pricings here. But I think I'll continue sticking to vodafone So i get the 5G modem for free after 22 months ish, and not worry about changing ISP at least for 11 months $67 ish for 150 ish download average with 40 ish upload average

    • Lucky, I wish I could get 5g home broadband. Literally 2 houses away from being eligible.

      • +1

technically I also can only access 5G home internet from vodafone, even though I get full 5G network at home from all major 5G providers. My guess is Hakoptus and telstra want people to stick on NBN because customer will likely pay more money on NBN (vs 5G) if he wanted fast internet connections (e.g. 250 Mbps ish down etc.)

or may be there systems are still incapable to allow network to handle 1 more extra person LoL
