seems like good deal but dont need more monitors

    • +1

Must be a really good deal - you can see on the eBay sales log that Broden just bought 10.

  • +3

After 10 years wouldn't the LEDs be worn out by now?

    • +1

Mine are still going strong. I'd assume some degradation somewhere. I've been trying to find a reason to upgrade but I haven't yet.

      • +4

Dell make good monitors. I've got decade-old units in use in a corporate fleet and they're still going strong.

Acer on the other hand, I was gifted for my shed by one by a friend who was going to dump it because HDMI failed and it gets static image burn-in - it was three years old when he gave it to me.

        • Dell makes monitors and UltraSharp monitors. The last ones are the ones that surely last. I had an Ultrasharp XXX08 one, made in 2007, and I've used if for more 10 years until I moved house and I got rid of it.

    • Is it the age or the number of hours being turned on that counts?

    • +1

I've got 3 x U2410's still going strong, two years older than the U2412 above

      • I've got two of those in front of me right now. The lamps keep my office warm in winter!

    • +1

LEDs, or CCFL at that age? The specs say 38W, up to 72W max! (sure its not CRT? :-)

      • +1

LEDs for the U2412M (and the previous U2410 was CCFL). Great monitors, perfect for office use, especially on a strict budget.

Also, found an old note I made on this monitor's power draw: Dell U2412M —> 15W on desktop (13W with all black background, 18W with all white background) (20% brightness, 75% contrast).

    • Still have UltraSharp U2412M & 1905FP on my desk that I use most days… Yup that monitor from 2005 at 1280x1024 resolution.

      • Lol same U2412M & 1907FP here. The 19 is still useful as a reference panel but feels a bit small now.

    • +1

Yes on my U2412M, the LEDs are showing wear, there is a pink tinge that can be mostly calibrated out but you really notice it in the OSD as calibration doesn't apply to the OSD.

  • +1

How old are these and how's the backlight?

    • +1

Last 2 numbers is the year of manufacture

      • +9

12 AD. Wow these are old.

        • +9

If they have survived close to 2 Millenia, I think they'll be good for another couple of years.

      • +4

That's the model year (these were actually released late 2011). The actual month/year of manufacture are printed on the labels of the units themselves.

  • +3

Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea but it's not too hard to find these for free in corporate/university dumpsters.

    • +2

I got a HP E240 for free via an IT friend just as how you described it. Organisations/schools literally just dumped them rather than even putting up for sales. I guess too much hassle for them but can be a nice gift to someone who is in need of a workable monitor.

    • Also plentiful on FB Marketplace for around the same prices (can be haggled cheaper too).

    • -5
  • +3

should be two for that price then its a deal

  • +2

    Delivery….. kills $45

  • +2

No deal, you can find newer gen monitors just looking around the same price or even cheaper sometimes on FB marketplace or gumtree locally.

  • +2

These are 16:10 IPS monitors, roughly equivalent in size to a 20 inch 4:3 (obviously with a bit extra on the sides for a bezel).

I don't know if I'd buy one as a regular monitor, but if you're building a home arcade cabinet, you could do worse; and it's tough to argue with the price.

    • +2

      building a home arcade cabinet

I have one of these monitors at home sitting in its box, I think you just gave me a reason to use it.

    • +5

I don't know if I'd buy one as a regular monitor

      Why?
16:10 is better for office based tasks as you have extra height so need to scroll less.

There's no disadvantage to having one compared to 16:9 unless you are really annoyed by having some black bars on the screen when you watch a video/tv/movie

      • +7

Love my 16:10 monitors happy to pay the premium. People don't know what they are missing imo

      • Because it's a ten year old second hand monitor, and I'd rather a new one.

        • I was asking why wouldn't you get one because you said

These are 16:10 IPS monitors, roughly equivalent in size to a 20 inch 4:3 (obviously with a bit extra on the sides for a bezel).
I don't know if I'd buy one as a regular monitor

  • +2

I'm all for recovering and repurposing old tech but I wouldn't pay $70 for a 10 year old monitor when a new one is $140.

    • +3

      Higher res on the Dell - 1920 x 1200 vs 1920 x 1080

      • +1

10 years of extra wear on the Dell…

        • +1

          It's broken in nicely.

      • as @jasong pointed out its different res
even now the new WUXGA monitors are all $250++

      • +1

        That's 16:10 vs 16:9

    • +7

It's "only" 120 pixels, but I can tell you, for someone using it as a portrait monitor, that extra 120 pixels of width (in portrait) makes a difference!

    • +3

I'm all for recovering and repurposing old tech but I wouldn't pay $70 for a 10 year old monitor when a new one is $140.

That's a bit like saying you'd prefer a new Kia than a 10 year old Ferrari!

Of course, if you've never driven a Ferrari, then the Kia's a great deal.

      • -1

        Barely a valid comparison

        • +1

Spoken like someone who's never actually used an Ultrasharp monitor!

  • +1

Have a 30inch ultrasharp from around the same era and the colours are still better than my new monitors. I just wish the resolution was a bit higher it's only 1600p.

  • +1

I am contemplating 'downgrading' from a single 32" 4K monitor to two Hi Res (WUXGA) cause there are a lot of benefits to having two independent workspaces.
(the two main issues here are that you need a docking station and the bezel on each monitor is 'huge' …. and that is why I originally changed to a single 32" monitor because of the small real estate on my desk)

    • I have done that and dont regret a bit.
Moved away from 32 inch 4k monitor to cheap two FHD monitor on dual monitor stand. The screens are more usable for office work and coding etc.

      • I've got 32" at work and 2*24" at home and likewise prefer the dual monitor set up. It's a pain to share a 32" on Teams as the writings end up being ridiculously small.

    • +2

Are you using monitor arms? That might help with the small desk - you might be able to keep your 32" 4K, and add one of these Dells to the side (perhaps in portrait, or switching between portrait and landscape as needed).

That's what I do - except, my main monitor is a 34" ultrawide (3440x1440), and my side monitor is my 32" 4K, lol. I switch it between portrait and landscape as needed.

I also use my laptop screen below my ultrawide, and actually have a third monitor (19") on another arm off to the side - but that is unused, because my work laptop only supports three monitors total! :)

But yeah, 32" 4K with 1920x1200 portrait to the side would be nice, if you can make it work with your small desk (using monitor arms).

      • +2

        Portrait mode is very underappreciated.

      • +1

        @caprimulgus monitor envy ;-)
used to have 2x24" (+ 14" laptop) but that literally covered 100% of the desk. The single 32" 4K monitor is nice from a real estate pov but the drawbacks of having one workspace keep me wanting to downgrade. I love having a high resolution (4K) but having one workspace and dropping the resolution every screen share or zoom meeting is a PIA.

  • I currently use the 2009 dell U2410, these things use a tonne of power and spit out a lot of heat, the dvi ports randomly just stopped working for some reason, ymmv

    • +2

I'm using a U2412M myself, its cool to the touch, but another Dell monitor I'm using (07 model) is quite warm so I think it might be more power efficient as time goes on.

  • For comparison, a near-new 1200-line model with 3-year warranty from Dell is $269:

    • +2

U series are higher than P series.

Not saying this is better than what you posted but just pointing out that the two are different series.

      • -1

I can't tell the difference, except my U-series has more ports :-) Both are very good.

  • Got one off fb market in 2019 for $50. They are actually still great monitors, being the U series. Factoring the delivery, this is bit too expensive tho, not sure I'd buy now

  • Great solid office monitor, they have been the standard monitor in our office and they are still going strong. 16:10 is great for side by side documents.

  • Have couple of these that I use as a secondary monitors. Great little champs. Paid 150 bux for 2 pieces used from gumtree.

  • Can vouch that these are more reliable than a Renault. Bought a few in 2012 and still kicking on faultlessly. My Renault bought in 2015 and a bucket of shieeeeeet in 2022.

    • +1

      I have a U2410 that's still going strong.

Meanwhile, other family members have been through multiple monitors.

      • Multiple monitors or marriages?
