No both RAM and SSD are soldered.
Was exactly what I was thinking too..
Nope. entirely soldered to the mainboard.
It does mention a removable SSD? Increasing storage to even 256gb would give me a lot more confidence in buying this. I think I read somewhere that Win11 would take up a stack of room on its own…
Hence, Surface Go. You can add your media in a SD card / usb c storage. I used 128gb version for year. Perfect for travelling. Good comparison would be cromebook but better.
RAM no, SSD appears yes. It would be a 2230 size m.2
Guide here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/surface-ssd-remova…
Or
There is a 256GB model of the surface go 2. I don't think it's listed on the MS ebay though.
Does the 'Go' have the same fantastic screen as the Surface Laptop?
Nope, much lower resolution, but it's still pretty good. This is an entry level unit for e-mail, uni work or very casual use. At this price it's a bargain and better it charges via the USB-C port too so you dont have to use the proprietry microsoft port.
"pretty good"!? It's not even FHD. Only 1536 x 1024 .
Has all the disadvantages of Surface (soldered, expensive to repair ) without the nice screen.
The screen is a 3:2 aspect ratio so its impossible to be FHD resolution because that would require a 16:9 screen to match the FHD aspect ratio
@spaceflight: Duh. Would you prefer I worded it "less than FHD"?
A 3:2 of 1920x1280 would make a nice improvement over FHD. (1920x1200 is common) The Go is worse.
Duh. Would you prefer I worded it "less than FHD"?
I'd prefer it if you knew what you were talking about.
A 3:2 of 1920x1280 would make a nice improvement over FHD
Only of you want 3:2 aspect ratio.
It isn't an improvement over FHD as it's a completely different aspect.FHD is 1920x1080 pixels which has an aspect ratio of 16:9
(1920x1200 is common)
No it isn't, that's 16:10 which is not common (it used to be but people didn't like the black bars when watching movies and TV so computers moved towards 16:9
Most screens are 16:9The Go is worse.
Than what?
"pretty good"!? It's not even FHD. Only 1536 x 1024 .
It's a 12.4" 148ppi screen which has the same pixel pitch as FHD on a 14.8" screen.
Has all the disadvantages of Surface (soldered, expensive to repair ) without the nice screen.
Maybe you haven't seen the new Surface devices. They're designed to be repairable. You can even replace the SSD yourself. You can find disassembly guides here.
@eug: Pixel pitch is irrelevant when you hold a small screen closer.
Trying to do real work or study on a lower-res screen means more scrolling back and forth.
Lower res is OK for media consumption, or websites like this.the new Surface devices. They're designed to be repairable.
Thanks, they seem to be improving. But from Microsoft website:
Can surface go 2 battery replaced?
Please be also informed that there are no available battery replacement for your device. The whole Surface needs to be replaced instead. That is unforgivable.
Pixel pitch is irrelevant when you hold a small screen closer.
This is a laptop, not a phone. You won't be holding it closer as it's sitting on a desk or lap.
If you have to move closer to the screen to see things, then maybe a compact, light, small-screened laptop is not for you. There are plenty of people who have no issues though; this laptop is for them.Trying to do real work or study on a lower-res screen means more scrolling back and forth.
Once again it depends on what sort of work or study you do. It might not suit you and it definitely won't suit me either, but looking at how friends and work colleagues use their laptops, there's absolutely a market for a laptop of this size.
The thing to keep in mind is not everyone is a power user. There is a huge number of people who don't live and breathe computers. They use their laptops to get a task done, then they shut it. They don't browse websites like OzB and Reddit and spend half the night on a computer. They just want to type out an essay, watch youtube, check emails, maybe fill out forms, and that's it. Then they sit on a sofa and watch TV while browsing social media on their phone.
I would never buy this laptop for myself, but there are definitely people I would recommend it to. Different people have different requirements. e.g. I would never recommend a $697 convertible Chromebook tablet to many people, but that doesn't make it a bad device - it just doesn't suit everyone's use cases.
That is unforgivable.
Just wait till a third party store sells it.
@eug: Oh I agree with most of that.
I should have been clearer - I think the Go loses the thing that made the expensive Surface products worth considering.
Though at this price, $626, it is back in contention.
Trying to do real work or study on a lower-res screen means more scrolling back and forth.
Lower res is OK for media consumption, or websites like this. That's not necessarily true as higher resolution means that the screen content is smaller compared to the same sized screen in a lower resolution.
With a higher resolution screen you might need to turn on scaling so you can read the content on the screen, which does about the same thing as having lower resolution screen
and better it charges via the USB-C port too so you dont have to use the proprietry microsoft port.
I love the Surface Connect port. It's much quicker to plug in and if the cable is tripped on it just pops out. It works with their dock too which makes it really convenient for plugging in a monitor, power, keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet more quickly and safely. It will also reduce wear on the USB-C ports.
And as kerfuffle says, Surface devices can also charge with USB-C if needed so you get the best of both worlds.
Perhaps but if you're out and about who has a Surface Port? plenty have a 30w+ USB-C charger.
@SydneySchnorrer: Not sure if you are aware; Surface laptops can be charged from either port. If you're at home or in the office you can use the Surface Connect port, if you're out and about you can use the USB-C port.
@eug: Of course I'm aware but most laptop users are mobile and the most standardised charging is USB-C, fact.
@SydneySchnorrer: I'm not sure what your point is. This laptop has a Type USB-C port. You can charge the laptop (and all Surface laptops with type-C ports) with that Type C port. So what's the issue?
No. Can't even draw on it with a Surface Pen.
it charges via the USB-C port too so you dont have to use the proprietry microsoft port.
The normal Surface Laptops can also charge via USB-C. Source: I have a SL3
Anyone think the ms store would price match?
I was trying to get them to price match the surface laptop and they declined, but I've asked to appeal it. A bit disappointed with their service tbh
yeah i have amex offer spend 500 get 100 will consider if they can
It’s $150 back not $100
I have $150 which means if you go through MS and use the amex it's $10 more and you get a free mouse
Update: they say they can't price match eBay, only Harvey Norman and JB , and even then when I tried to price match HN previously they declined it. :(
Reckon Officeworks would price match?
Definitely not!!
@azzaisawesome: I did try tho, got the standard “we can’t do promo codes even if it applies to everything”
is there a 16gb version?
Yes. It's called get a Surface Laptop (not Go).
So no Surface GO 16gb?
This seems a good deal.
Do you know if Ryzen 5 version is noticeable slower than i5 version?
R5 seems to have slightly longer battery life tooYes that is a good deal, they just restock so if u dont buy now it will get sold out quick
R5 is faster than i5
OOS
Will this be faster than chromebook to open browser and load a news page?
No lte
Chromebook will be fasterNo Surface Laptop has LTE
Read my sentence again. You linked a tablet.
$150 Amex cashback spend $500?
Owned the prior model. Was great apart from the non backlit keyboard
You want a backlit keyboard, you get a Surface Laptop (not Go)
You want a better screen, you get a Surface Laptop (not Go)
You want an additional USB-A Charge port (with the AC adaptor), you get a Surface Laptop (not Go)I did. I have a SL3 15" 16/512 GB.
@kerfuffle: Good choice.
Is the larger screen worth the extra $? Or you connect it with a monitor as well?@Al123: Yes and yes. But I paid a lot for mine, even when it was on sale.
@kerfuffle: I am thinking a 27" monitor with the 13.5" laptop, then the laptop screen won't be the primary one.
This would have been way more attractive with a 256G SSD. Seriously, it only costs an extra $10 - $20 from 128g to 256g and Microsoft could have just upped the price a tad more and it would have sold like hot cakes.
They do sell a 256GB model for $863. It's not on eBay though.
$10-$20 Wholesale…. but they still have to make money with mark up
Reading the specs, looks like the screen is the achilles heel of this model.
Opening some websites and do document editing on the built in screen might be troublesome. Not a problem at all if this hooked to external monitor.Would this be the best deal going around for a high school laptop? Basic power, long battery life, lightweight? There's a lot of laptop deals going around OzB but having problems parsing through all the specs and details.
I’d say yes. You could probably get a cheaper laptop. But the portability and lightness of this laptop is great for this price.
Bought this for my daughter's high school as well.
Build quality is pretty good for the price, and no need to pay extra for the keyboard. Slim bezel make it sleeker than Surface Pro 7+ (which around similar price point but not including keyboard).Few things to note from what I saw on JB display model:
. Screen angle doesn't go all the way back, only around 110 degrees
. Screen resolution is not even FHD, but I find it very usable with that screen size
. Screen brightness is just ok. A tad brighter would be preferableOther than that it's pretty solid laptop for the price
The deal ended. Shame… was hovering on this and was going to buy tomorrow. What gives Microsoft?
Arrived with a dead pixel, now being told to lodge a warranty claim directly with Microsoft who state they might send a refurbished replacement. Cannot speak to anyone at microsoft.com to confirm this won't happen, and replacement timeframes are like 2+ weeks.
I am actually stunned at how badly they are handling this considering they are supposed to be a reputable company, probably going to lodge consumer affairs end ebay complaint against the store, not sure how much effect that will have.
Wow that's shocking customer service.
That’s ridiculous, Contact eBay support, have pics of the dead pixel, demand a refund
Won't be an issue getting a refund but I think if you open an eBay return case you won't get the option for a replacement.
This is correct, they will give me a refund but I wanted the laptop that wasn't faulty. Not like it's black Friday anymore.
This was going to be used for studies over the Christmas break so it's pretty frustrating now I've got to deal with their returns process and then go and try find another laptop somewhere. They should just not send me a refurb for a day old laptop.
Maybe I can just risk it and if they do send a refurb then return it - a lot of mucking around. I expected more from this company.
Can u upgrade the SSD to 256GB?
