  • Sold out around my area. :(

  • If you buy the older Ultimate Him with BCF, rebel and Supercheap Auto logos, does that mean they won't work at stores where the logo isn't there, but on the current list, EG JB HiFi?

  • Can someone please confirm whether the 10% applies to variable value cards as well if I load them with $100, $50 and $30 or do I have to somehow find fixed value cards for this promo to work? My BIGW seems to have Ultimate cards with no fixed amount and it is mentioned that I could load up to $500 on each card. Tried loading $100 but didn't work (I tired only the card at checkout without adding any other item so not sure if this was the issue)

    • Variable load denominations are excluded from this 10% deal. Find the fix value cards and check on the back the card no. starts with a 4 (not the PCN no.).

    • +1

You will need to find the fixed value denominations (and good luck).

      • I tried loading $100 onto a variable load Ultimate Home gift card (out of curiosity) and there was no discount applied at the checkout.

      • The posters at a couple of BIG W stores near me clearly state the 10% off deal excludes variable load gift cards.

      • If you scan a variable denomination Ultimate gift card at one of the price check scanners scattered around the store, it will show the minimum amount you can load, but there is no discount. If you instead scan a fixed denomination Ultimate gift card, it will show the discounted price.

  • +1

No - the discount does not apply to variable denomination gift cards. I found that out a the checkout. However, staff were very helpful at BIG W Canberra Centre and went somewhere and came back with 10 x $50 HOME gift cards. Next learning experience was that the extra Everyday Rewards discount only works if you are enrolled in Everday Extra. That took 2 mins to upgrade my Everyday Rewards a/c via a free 30 day trial, and then YES successfully received the additional 10% discount. I did not need to buy any other non gift-card items. Transaction was done today at 1PM, so that additional discount is still available.

    • -5

Thanks all for clarifying this. Went to few different BigW stores around Melbourne but as @WookieMonster mentioned I could not find any fixed denomination cards accepted at JB as that is where I'd want to use these.

The OZBargainer in me wouldn't let me give up that easily so I put Plan B into action. The plan is morally questionable but a family friend who works at WW agreed to bring home 12 x $100 Him cards which I would take to BigW tomorrow and load them there. They didn't have any issue bringing these home as the cards weren't loaded so hopefully I'm sorted. JB is not mentioned on the Him card but the Ultimate website states that JB is also included which is also verified by the table above (Tnx. Wookie).

    Fellow great ozbargainerz, the website
Happiest baby, has some expensive things for sale. Is there a way I can get discounted gift cards for them?

@cruiserbear04 Very lucky and great service!

I bought $850 worth of Ultimate Home from 2 stores without additional 10% from Extras. I haven't been able to find any more stores in Perth that have Ultimate or Everyone. None of the 3 stores I went to stocked Everyone. No signs of 10% off either.

There seem to be three types of till systems at Big W for the Everyday Extra 10% off based on comments here.

    1) 10% off gift cards without purchasing non-gift card items (rare).
    2) More common to get 10% off gift cards with non-gift card purchases.
    3) The new till system when updated has no Extra discount on gift cards even with non-gift card items.

My first time purchasing these gift cards and I've only just started buying gift cards. I need a dummy's guide to gift cards. Thanks everyone for the tips.

@WookieMonster has a PhD in Gift Cards and needs to write a book. It would be a best seller!

The 10% off plus further 10% off due to Everyday Extras was still working as of 2pm today (Sunday) but I did have to buy a non gift card item in the same transaction for the full stacked discount to take effect - quickly pinched a Kinder Surprise from next to the self serve checkout. Couldn't pay for gift cards with my discounted Wish gift card though. And initially it seemed like all the fixed denomination cards I wanted were sold out, but a staff member was able to open up the display rack and rummage around for more.

    Thanks for the deal!

  • Well i had no luck with rewards extras at Epping, Vic. The initial 10% worked and I got a drink to go with it but the additional 10% from extras seem to apply only to the drink. Do I need to go through the self checkout for this to work as the one I used was a normal register. Has anyone had the additional 10% applied to their total at any BigW stores in Melbourne so I can go there next.

    • Yes it worked for me at Big W Highpoint.

      • Awesome. Was it through a self checkout?

        • Yes it was self checkout.
It did ask for staff log in about 3 times but eventually all good.
$500 of Ultimate Home gift cards for $405 (plus the non gift card item).

          • @Melburnian: Thanks so much. I will try my luck tomorrow. Hoping to buy 10 cards which I think is the maximum they'd allow in one transaction.

        • worked at Doncaster, both self and serviced checkouts.

  • This deal available on 23rd Wednesday as well? Want to check Coles deal first as well

    • +3

      Yep.

The last day of this deal is Wednesday, and it will be available until a store’s closing time on Wednesday.

I secured $790 worth of Thanks Cards & Kids card for PS5. It cost me around $640 with the extras trick. Now I need to wait for a PS5 drop at JB Hifi.

Purchased today (20/11/2022 at BigW Hobart) - Ultimate gift for Everyone ($50 x 8) plus drink, and able to get 10% discount (card promotion) plus 10% discount from Reward Extra.

  • Are Ultimate Home and Everyone the only cards that cover JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks and The Good Guys?
The Card Network from Coles for 15% off next week doesn't appear to include Officeworks.

    • +1

Ultimate Home and Ultimate Everyone are the only multi-retailer gift cards from Blackhawk Network and TCN that include JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and Officeworks. (The holy trinity?)

No TCN gift cards (at least the ones restricted to specific retailers) currently include Officeworks as a participating retailer.

      • +1

        Thanks.

  • @WookieMonster, I'm planning on purchasing a laptop that I think historically gets discounted around December/January and I was wondering whether it would be safer to buy around 2k worth of Ultimate gift cards and wait until the laptop goes on sale and then use those Ultimate gift cards to buy the laptop or whether it is safer to convert these ultimate cards to e.g. JB Hi-Fi gift cards as it would theoretically be safer (less of an incentive for JB cards to be compromised since only one store)

This obviously raises the notion that I am restricted to only purchasing from JB and not TGG if there's a sale there but I could always price match I guess.
Also, it may be true that JB cards are actually easier to be compromised when compared to Ultimate. I do remember you saying that you haven't come across physical Ultimate cards being compromised.

    • +4

I would personally purchase the Ultimate gift cards and then hold onto them until a potential sale, as flexibility trumps security (at least for me).

I have not come across a physical Ultimate gift card that has been compromised, but that does not mean there will not be a situation where one of Blackhawk Network’s systems gets compromised and suddenly fraudulent transactions start happening across physical and digital Ultimate gift cards. (Very unlikely that would ever happen, but you cannot rule it out.)

If you have one of your Ultimate gift cards compromised, clauses 6 and 7 of the Ultimate gift card terms and conditions state you can actually contact Blackhawk Network to dispute any charges you do not recognise. However, for JB Hi-Fi gift cards, the terms and conditions does not state anything about being able to dispute fraudulent transactions on a JB Hi-Fi gift card, so you are kinda stuffed in that scenario.

I have some questions for you, as they should help guide you towards forming your own position:

      • Are you concerned about the fact that Blackhawk Network can remove a participating retailer at any time without prior notice? That happened within the last month.

      • Do you have a backup plan for your Ultimate gift cards if you suddenly find that you cannot use Ultimate gift cards at JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys or Officeworks for your laptop purchase? Although JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys or Officeworks may be participating in the Ultimate gift card scheme today, it does not mean they will be tomorrow.

      • Are you prepared to spend the effort converting Ultimate gift cards into a retailer’s own gift card (e.g. JB Hi-Fi gift card)? At least you can (sort of) do this for JB Hi-Fi through their website, but it is very much hit and miss.

      • What would happen if you converted your Ultimate gift cards into a retailer’s own gift card (e.g. JB Hi-Fi), but the laptop ended up being on sale elsewhere and JB Hi-Fi is refusing to price match? Do you have something else to spend those gift cards on?

      • Are you concerned about the fact that Blackhawk Network can remove a participating retailer at any time without prior notice? That happened within the last month.

Well yes but the Ultimate cards I have right now are Home cards so I think its less likely for JB and TGG to be removed as they sell home appliances (this might be naive of me). Also since these retailers are on the packaging of the home cards, in the event that the laptop retailers get removed and the cards somehow are no longer valid wouldn't that constitute as misleading and deceptive advertising? (Maybe the terms and conditions allow them to do that but I think fine print is also against ACCC, I might be wrong)
There's also the possibility that removed retailers still work like Supercheap Auto and the Him cards.
Please correct me if you disagree with anything.

Do you have a backup plan for your Ultimate gift cards if you suddenly find that you cannot use Ultimate gift cards at JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys or Officeworks for your laptop purchase? Although JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys or Officeworks may be participating in the Ultimate gift card scheme today, it does not mean they will be tomorrow.

If Officeworks is still available I can probably stock up on printer ink. Maybe get some clothes from the Iconic. The absolute worst-case scenario I guess would be to list them on classified at cost or discounted price

Are you prepared to spend the effort converting Ultimate gift cards into a retailer’s own gift card (e.g. JB Hi-Fi gift card)? At least you can (sort of) do this for JB Hi-Fi through their website, but it is very much hit and miss.

I have before and will do it again. In fact I recently converted $2000 worth of cards into Apple gift cards.

What would happen if you converted your Ultimate gift cards into a retailer’s own gift card (e.g. JB Hi-Fi), but the laptop ended up being on sale elsewhere and JB Hi-Fi is refusing to price match? Do you have something else to spend those gift cards on?

Honestly, I would just absorb the cost as it would be less than $200 by my calculations

Depending on what you say on the first point I am leaning toward holding onto Ultimate cards. But the fact that Ultimate can remove retailers does concern me so I may convert to JB cards if depending on what you say about the first point.

Also, how are banks on charge backs for "hacked" gift cards?

        Cheers for the detailed response.

        • Although JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys or Officeworks may be participating in the Ultimate gift card scheme today, it does not mean they will be tomorrow.

Are you also suggesting that these retailers can remove themselves if they want? i.e. not Blackhawk removing but the JB, TGG, and Officeworks themselves.

Also going back to what James Hawk it was quite risky for me to use Thanks at JB haha. But I guess as long as it is still on the website it should be fine.

          • @HairyChickens:

Are you also suggesting that these retailers can remove themselves if they want?

            Yep. That is always possible.

I suspect that is what happened to the Super Retailer Group retailers (rebel, Supercheap Auto, BCF). They were removed on 01 October 2022 for any new Ultimate eGift Cards, and will be removed from physical Ultimate gift cards as new batches of Ultimate gift cards are created.

Super Retailer Group retailers are now part of the TCN gift card scheme.

        • Also since these retailers are on the packaging of the home cards, in the event that the laptop retailers get removed and the cards somehow are no longer valid wouldn't that constitute as misleading and deceptive advertising? (Maybe the terms and conditions allow them to do that but I think fine print is also against ACCC, I might be wrong)

The current situation with Ultimate gift cards and the Super Retailer Group of retailers indicates that you would still be able to redeem the Ultimate Home gift cards at JB Hi-Fi, even if JB Hi-Fi was phasing itself out of (or being phased out of) the Ultimate gift card scheme. I think you’d be fine if that situation arose, because your Ultimate Home gift cards would probably still work at JB Hi-Fi up until the card expired.

Having said that, a counter-point is David Jones. David Jones used to be a participating retailer of the Ultimate Her gift card (the EFTPOS version), but they left the scheme in 2020, around the same time they shut down their discounted gift card program. There was no transition period before they completely left the scheme, so any Ultimate Her (EFTPOS) gift cards with the David Jones logo on it would no longer be formally accepted at David Jones. I will note that I saw at least one story where the Ultimate Her (EFTPOS) gift card could still be used at David Jones even after they formally stopped accepting Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift cards, but that has probably changed now.

The Ultimate gift cards fine print wouldn’t be a violation of the ACCC per se, but you would have very strong grounds for a misleading advertising complaint nonetheless. Just because someone shoves a clause into a contract does not mean it is immune to any laws.

Depending on what you say on the first point I am leaning toward holding onto Ultimate cards. But the fact that Ultimate can remove retailers does concern me so I may convert to JB cards if depending on what you say about the first point.

If JB Hi-Fi suddenly left the Ultimate gift card scheme, I think OzBargain would be in uproar and would organise a rebellion lol

More seriously, I think you should be fine if you only need to hold out for two months max. I think a lot would have to happen before JB Hi-Fi would leave the scheme.

Also, how are banks on charge backs for "hacked" gift cards?

Honestly, no idea, because I’ve had no experience on that. I also haven’t really read much discussion of that on here either.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Appreciate the insightful response. I think it should be fine for 2 months so looks like I won't be converting.

      • Are you prepared to spend the effort converting Ultimate gift cards into a retailer’s own gift card (e.g. JB Hi-Fi gift card)? At least you can (sort of) do this for JB Hi-Fi through their website, but it is very much hit and miss.

May I know the details How to change Ultimate gift cards to JB Hi-Fi gift card through their website? (Is it through Here ?)

It's my first time buying Gift cards! I have 10x 50$ Ultimate Home :( Worrying I will waste them because the item I want is only in online store..

        Thank you for your help!

        • Have a look at this comment.

          • @WookieMonster: Thank you very much for the information!!

I have a problem that I couldn't add the Gift Card to my Apple wallet so I couldn't try any of your solutions yet.

I have checked the expiry date and I am sure CCV is correct as well as I could using those details successfully on exchangeyourcard
But it just failed to be added to Apple Wallet. :(

Any possible way to solve the problem? Thanks

            • +1

@kapeiranai: I just found the reason!!
It was because my iPhone system setting was in another language, after I changed the system language to "English" and tried again. The gift card was successfully added to my Apple wallet :))

@kapeiranai: I did not know that could be an issue. That's great to know for the next person who has this issue!

  • @WookieMonster Officeworks lsn't listed on the packaging of the Ultimate Home. I'm not sure about Everyone. Was Officeworks a recent addition?

    • My Home cards manufactured on 6/22 do have Officeworks

      • There is a 10/21 on all my10 cards. Card number starts with 4.

        • I used a Thanks card 5/21 at JB. Not on the packaging but listed on the website. Went though with no issues.

Officeworks seems to be a recent addition.

JB Hi-Fi Chadstone Home Superstore refused to sell me apple gift card to me when they saw me taking out the $500 ultimate gift cards. I went in at night when there wasn't many people in the store nor at the check out. And I was told NO, you can buy maximum 1 apple gift card.
