  • Was just about to post, lets see if this is cheapest, or something better comes up during Black Friday.

  • +7

Black Friday / Cyber Monday should have some decent deals on this . Sub $50 would be a better deal if you are in no rush.

For the uninitiated, does someone care to explain why this would be better than the $59 model at Officeworks ?

EDIT HD vs. 4K - answered my own question. Sorry!

    • +4

      'cos 4K > HD

      • +3

Thanks! Realised about 0.2s after posting my comment haha

        And extra 500mb ram

  • Ive got a few 4k firesticks.

I watch Youtube, Amazon Prime TV, Stan, Netflix, Kayosports & the free to air tv apps.

Is their any notable difference between these devices?

    • +1

You can cast to these from your mobile devices (i.e. they act as a Chromecast as wel las a set-topbox with remote), and the ui isn't quite the adfest of FireOS.

There's also a slight difference in what you can get in the native appstore and what you have to sideload. Kayo, Tivimate, KODI etc. It's also easier to change region of a Fire device to get out-of-region apps if you want them without sideloading. But if you don't mind sideloading apps then the main difference is just the UI and cast destination functionality.

      • You can cast to these from your mobile devices (i.e. they act as a Chromecast as wel las a set-topbox with remote),

You can also cast to your firestick.

        • +1

You may be able to share content to it depending on the app(s) you use but it is not 'chromecasting' in the true sense of the technology as that's Google proprietary tech. Unless there's now some 3rd party product emulation of the spec which people run on those devices, in which case I stand corrected.

          • @zfa:

Do you have firestick? My youtube app on my samsung phone allow me to cast to firestick 4k.

            • @superforever: Yeah, I own about half a dozen different versions of them. Ditto a couple of other Android things like the mibox and plain old Chromecasts.

              • @zfa:

Yeah, I own about half a dozen different versions of them

In that case you can try cast it from youtube app to firestick, I didn't know that before, I always thought can only cast to Google devices.

                • @superforever: I don't need to try it. I know YouTube can send content to FireTV, it's just not 'Chromecasting'.

                  • +1

I press cast on my youtube app and it said Cast to and I can see my firestick on it.

The firestick also listed on my PC Chrome browser cast list

So if it is not casting, what is it?

                    • +1

@superforever: Casting is a very specific client-server tech. If you're really interested here's the basic intro:

                      https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/reference

PM me if you've any more questions as we're not adding anything in this deal discussion debating the nut and bolts of second-screen support in apps.

                      • +4

@zfa: More people only care if they can cast video from their phone to the device but what you said make people think you can't with firestick.

Of course you can't do everything like a real chromecast device, like using the Google Home app, I understand that.

                        • +3

More people only care if they can cast video from their phone to the device but what you said make people think you can't with firestick.

I'm not going to omit a vital difference such as lack of Google Cast support when someone has earnestly asked for differences between this and a firestick just because some people who don't know what they're talking about might get confused, lol. I already clarified that some apps - and yes, that includes YouTube - might support second-screen right up top in my first reply to you. Sure people will work it out.

    • Mostly it's your preferred ecosystem - native support for Google's services; Chromecast and Voice Assistant in particular.

    • +2

I've had both. Personally I prefer the fire stick UI but each to their own.

The big difference would be Kayo and Binge not officially on Fire Tv. Might be a deal breaker for some. Personally not an issue for me as I prefer kayo through the kodi add on so I don't have to deal with the sluggish kayo interface.

Also I normally just watch the kayo live channels and there's an add on u can get in kodi from slyguy repository that converts it to a TV guide (same with the Binge live channels)

      • I would buy for Kayo TBH…

Is their an app to download?

I dont want to cast I like remote control.

        • +1

There is a solid Kayo app on the Play store that works on these devices, can be a little tricky to find some things though.

    • Offtopic but if you don't pay for YouTube you can uninstall/disable the official YouTube app on your Fire Sticks and install the app SmartTubeNext.

You can sign into your youtube account on it and cast to it from the official YouTube app on your phone still but smarttube has no ads and also has SponsorBlock integrated so you can turn that on to skip sponsor segments of videos.

    • Fire stick cons (from techspot):

      • Amazon needs to chill with the self-promotion
      • No Google Play apps
      • The menu system is still too bloated
      • Requires inconvenient power adapter

The Chromecast has greater support for streaming options.

Amazon Fire Stick has a limited scope when compared to other streaming devices. For instance, Google’s Chromecast is compatible with more peripherals than the Fire Stick, so you can easily use it with other devices, such as your computer, phone or laptop.

  • Can anyone who has one, comment on how the Plex app runs on this? I have an old Hisense that has an outdated Plex app, so just chromecasting from my phone, while it works, would be nice to have it all in one box with remote solution again.

    • +2

Runs well but doesn't have great audio support. Think its OPUS(?) audio I always need to transcode unless I go via my soundbar and let it passthrough for it to decode.

I rate it as a plex device but the Fire TV 4K Max has better audio support and might be on sale at some piont (two for 70 bucks or so wasn't it earlier in the year). I have a plex server and give those 4k Max devices out to friends justbecuase they're solid and I know they're going to work for them as opposed to having to support them using my plex on a shitty Tizen TV, say.

      • +1

I rate the Google TV higher than the Fire TV 4k Max for Plex - I have both. The Fire TV has a nasty issue with particular video releases (hopefully they'll fix it one day though).

    • +1

Have one connected to my home theater, plex works great. You might have a Bluetooth issue with headphones, if you encounter them change audio setting from sterio to mono on plex.

      • Wait, you can connect Bluetooth headset to Google chromecast with Google tv? That's cool! Didn't know this

        • Also you can connect xbox controller and play xbox game pass

    • I have the non 4K version - for our fairly basic set up Plex works really well

      • set up Plex works really well

Yes, except it didn't work with our teletext live tv subtitle.

Bought this a few months ago for $75, great device for the price.

Recently replaced with the new Apple TV which is more than 3x the price of this, but it’s a much better experience. Tho I wouldn’t say 3x the experience.

Few things I didn’t like with the Google TV were..
    1. No dynamic refresh rate setting based on content
    2. No dynamic picture profile based on content
    3. Navigating through it is a bit slow, but for the price it’s reasonable.

    • I feel the only thing Apple TV really had over chrome cast 4k was native apple streaming from another apple device

      • 1 & 2 mentioned are worth it alone IMO. I don’t want my media player changing the colour profile or refresh rate.

      • +3

Yeah I’d say the benefits are minimal if you’re not in the Apple ecosystems.

Though variable refresh rate and picture mode depending on content is quite nice. Another added bonus is being able to use AirPods Pro/Max with all its bells and whistles.

    • +1

Content matched frame rate is working in Android 12, both integer and fractional rates. App support of it is hit and miss though but I guess it'll follow.

  • +1

I have an 8yr old sony tv with the oldest of all chromecasts.
The apps in sony tv sucks as they dont have proper updates and keeps crashing (youtube /Netflix etc).
Also casting from phone sometimes is too sluggish even with a decent NBN conn.

So, will this new device help me in anyway or time for a new tv? :-P

    • +1

This will be a big improvement. Personally I’d go for an Apple TV but obviously it’s 3 times the price.
This becomes your smart tv interface. No need to cast as the apps are on the screen and you have a remote.

      • The apps are also on screen with this Chromecast and there's a remote with it.

    • +4

Yeah, this is a solid device. Only downside to your old Chromecast is a slight difference in user experience when casting from apps lke Netflix where this unit insists on opening the native app instead of proper casting. Or did - I don't use Netflix any more.

But if you're happy with your actual TV itself and think it just needs 'new smarts' and uptodate apps this is a solid choice IMO.

      • +1

Or did - I don't use Netflix any more.

yes it does use the app

      • +1

        Thanks guys…got one..

    • +1

Previously had a dumb TV and replaced my Gen 1 ChromeCast with a ChromeCast 4K w/TV

It's much snappier to load shows and having a remote to flick through programs is great.

I have a new TV but still use the ChromeCast 4K w/TV

    • +1

Absolutely. I also have a TV around that age with a dreadful clunky menu but still a great picture and the Chromecast has pretty much made it like new again.

    BFX30

Is there a thread about this 30% off code?

  • Is it possible to sideload apps on this device?

    • +1

Is it possible to sideload apps on this device?

Yes, just a normal andriod device

  • Buy now or wait a week

    • Yes

  • Do these work on 5ghz wifi?

  • I’ve had two of these, and both just chew through remote batteries (in days). One was to replace the original due to this issue but it has the same problem. It’s put me off using this device as it’s a nightmare just dealing with batteries non-stop. If anyone knows how to fix that, would love to know as it’s an otherwise decent device

    • I’ve had two of these, and both just chew through remote batteries (

No way, I am still using the first eneloop I put it in or may be charged once.

    • I bought one a few weeks ago and batteries are fine. Otherwise, ozbargainers should all have a good stock of ladda/eneloops by now right =D?

If I were you though, Id get a refund and buy from somewhere else - sometimes they could just have a faulty batch (eg I got a pixel 5 from north syd JB, very weird battery drain issue where it would go from 100 to 70 while I slept, screen would freeze, device would get hot, lose 10% browsing a few websites. Went through 2 replacements and they all had the same issue. Got the next replacement from a different JB store and everything was perfect and normal). But yea maybe return those and buy from this deal/wait for another BF sale

    • I've got a few and still on original batteries after more than a year.

Have you checked for a stuck button?

It's a bit hard to test the RF part, but you can check the IR portion just using a phone camera.

Point the top of the remote at the camera, if you can see a pink light flickering it's sending IR signals.

Otherwise get it fixed under warranty.

  • hows this device compare to an nVidia Shield Pro?

    • Shield pro has ethernet, you need an adaptor on the chromecast. Better 4k upscaling on the shield. Shield has better processor and more RAM

      • Better 4k upscaling on the shield. Shield has better processor and more RAM

Off topic, wondering the 4k upscaling is by the GCCTV or by my Samsung TV?

My Samsung TV info said UHD with some of my FHD streaming.

        • Shield does upscale to 4k, and does a good job in my experience and that of reviewers. To my knowledge GCCTV doesn't upscale and will possibly leave it up to your TV to upscale.

If that upscaling happens or not I'm not sure, and the quality of the upscaling will likely depend heavily on the capability of your TV. Some TVs do a good job of this, while others don't.

          • @nitens:

To my knowledge GCCTV doesn't upscale and will possibly leave it up to your TV to upscale.

Thanks, in that case must be my Samsung TV

            • @superforever: Maybe… I'm not super knowledgeable.

I'd guess that if your TV was reporting a UHD signal coming in on that HDMI port then the GCCTV is likely sending a UHD signal even though you're on FHD content. But I haven't used a GCCTV just a shield.

              • @nitens: I think is the Samsung TV upscaling the video, just tried play 1080p on PC, TV info still said UHD.

                • @superforever: How confusing… Who knows what's going on then? This whole space is a mess.

                  • @nitens:

How confusing… Who knows what's going on then?

Yeah, I even tried set the PC display to 1080p and play the video, TV info still said UHD.

    • Literally just pulled out my 2015 Shield TV last night after I couldn't get 4K HDR to work through Plex on my CCwGTV so I'm pretty fresh.

The Shield really is a premium device, it is much faster and far more satisfying for daily use, way more options if you're picky about Audio and Video settings, content matching of frame rate etc..

Keeping in mind I'm talking about the OG Shield TV too, I can only imagine they're better now again.

  • Cannot use the code. Where can I find the code? Used the BFX30 but didn't work.

  • What's the deal with these, i see dozens of ads selling these brand new sealed for $50 on facebook.

    • They're an easy enough way to convert Google Store credit to cash - Buy with the $$$ you got as a Pixel preorder bonus, sell for $50.. Profit?

N.B. Just assuming, haven't done this yet as I'm holding onto the credit to see if anything good comes with Black Friday 🙂

    • I think they were given away with the new Pixel 7.

    • oh i wouldn't mind snagging one, so they're just freebies sealed that people are selling?

  • How does the live tv function work? Has it got an inbuilt tuner and antenna input or something?

    • +1

How does the live tv function work?

      No tuner only streaming

    • Streaming so your WiFi will need to be decent. Works well for me and haven't used an antenna for around a year.

    • Don't think there are the actual 'Live Channels' feature in Aus yet, saw it come up for other countries when i had the vpn on (Nord VPN app works well btw).

I have set up this though, which is pretty handy and better interface than my tv.
not 4k though but alright if just watching the chase or something:
      https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/01/live-au-iptv-channels-on-…

  • What would be the best for streaming (Netflix, Dsiney+, Prime Video) out of Chromecast 4K, Apple TV 4k, or NVidia Shield Pro? I recently got a 4k TV, I know they've got some specific differences almost like Apples to Organes but I'm curious about people's opinions.

    • If I was purely using streaming apps, then I would lean more towards Apple TV 4K because the ‘match content’ feature works consistently unlike Android. SDR displays in SDR, HDR10 as HDR10 and DV as DV. Refresh rate also switches properly too.

NVIDIA Shield is the best all-round streaming device if you’re also into using Plex, Jellyfin or Emby though.

      I have both.

  • Have my upvote bargains grabber :)

    • +1

      Haha cheers lad 👊
Great to meet you and the Canberran gang at dinner today!

  • Can Officeworks pricebeat on this?

    • No, as OW don’t price beat if there’s a promo code entered

  • Off topic.

I'm using old Dell monitor, connected my logitech speaker via usb to power the speaker and 3.5mm headphone jack for the sound to the back of the monitor.

Using previous chromecast, I can control the volume via mobile phone.

Using this 4k chromecast, I can't control the volume at all either from remote or mobile phone. During the setup, I can't set up the volume when selected Dell as the monitor.
Sound the loudest at the moment, I guess.

If I press the power button on the remote, it is fine.i can control the menu.
    But NOT the volume button.
    Any idea? Thanks in advance.

    • But NOT the volume button.

Go to settings, remote, configure vol button, you will see option to control Chromecast volume.

BTW, this is what firestick 4k can't do.

      • Tried that but still unable to control the volume via remote.

        • Tried that but still unable to control the volume via remote.

Which volume you want to control? If the volume on the Chromecast itself that one should work.

          • @superforever: I expect to work but this model doesn't work.

Probably because combination old monitor and usb and 3.5mm z5 speaker
See below for the monitor model.

Will try next time with different combinations.

            Thank you

      • Yeah the HDMI eArc (CEC) settings work pretty well, my GTV remote can Power on/off the tv, Chromecast and soundbar with one button, volume on soundbar.. so only one remote necessary most of the time.

PS The dell monitor may not have HDMI Arc settings by the sound of it (assuming it has a speaker)
