Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix Subscriptions

Resharing after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix, except this guide may provide better guidance on sign ups. I've spent quite some time doing some testing and then making this post, so please share some love and let me know of any errors :)

Turkey is currently the cheapest place for a Netflix Standard and Premium subscription (for Basic plans, India is slightly cheaper by less than 10 cents), even after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 in a span of a year

(Well actually, Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans by several cents, according to this site and this full list of Netflix pricing around the world by CC123 and Giu, however, obtaining a Pakistan Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe)

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back)

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Possible Solution to Problem by toxicpuffle: For bypassing the mobile phone page for Part 2, what worked for me (at least signing up a few months ago) was turning off the VPN once you get to that page, so that it instead tries to verify your mobile with an Australian number instead of a Turkish one, and then turning the vpn back on after you’ve verified to complete the purchase. Reportedy didn't work - proceed with caution

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails - EASIEST METHOD)

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method, or add a new card in (you must do this - do not skip it)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Again, the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here

OP, this is a pretty good link that contains all the pricing and its conversion to various currencies

Ironically, I noticed that the formula seems to be failing for Pakistan. Pakistan's Premium plan is 1100 PKR which equates to $4.97 USD ($7.83 AUD). This is actually cheaper than Turkey's equivalent.

Not sure if you want to include that - but based on the trajectory of the currencies, I would dare say that Turkey's will end up being cheaper again in no time.

One small random caveat about Netflix Turkey which doesn't seem to be an issue on Netflix Pakistan. Netflix Turkey does not work when you use Malaysian IP addresses, whereas Pakistan does.

The real challenge is finding a Pakistan VPN. They are few and far between.

      • +11

based off the trajectory it could be cheaper to sign up in the UK in a few months.

Yes, I do know that Pakistan is in fact cheaper than Turkey by several cents. However, obtaining a Pakistan Netflix Gift Card is quite hard imo

Turkey has been way easier with everything.

        ExpressVPN has Pakistan servers…

You don't need a local gift card to subscribe. I know it's easier, but it's not essential. The same applies for Turkey - the gift card method makes it easier but it's not a prerequisite

          ExpressVPN has Pakistan servers…

Ah yes you're right. Let me clarify as I've tried several times: it's hard to get a Pakistan VPN that works - meaning, one that successfully displays the PKR pricing instead of GBP, EUR or something else irrelevant.

Similar problem to others complaining about windscribe and Turkey, or getting Indonesian currency instead of Indian currency when trying to get Indian YouTube premium

If you don’t go through the gift card method, it’ll either ask for a Turkey mobile number, or the some debit/credit cards may not be accepted which can cause a bit of a hassle. Same with Pakistan, if it asks for a Pakistan number.

If it works, however, then great! You’ll be saving a bit more :)

  • +1

-Can use any gift card option since it's pro-rated.
-can just message change for a instant cancellation too

  • +10

    +1 for the efforts, 👍

  • Yeah I used the gift card then new device with vpn to input my credit card

  • +6

It's been nearly 1 year since I switched to Turkey Netflix. Used new email to sign up via VPN, top up with Turkey gift cards

    • With the gift cards, do you still need a debit card on file?

      • +1

Nope. I don't link any card when signing up.
Just remember to keep topping up Netflix credits with 'em gift cards.
Under your Netflix account, you can find info about how much credits you have left

    • +1

There’s no need to top up with Gift Cards, can just make Netflix auto debit from your CC each month as per the instructions

      • Yeah but I tried that, it didn't work with my cards. And I'm comfortable with using gift cards

        • I have been topping up with turkey gcs as well but signed up to Revolut yesterday and hopped on to Netflix live chat to get my Revolut card added. Adding cc normally from the netflix portal would prompt tel num so the live chat is a good way to bypass that.
Using Revolut cc would save you a bit more money

          • @Brakus: I just looked in to Revolut from reading your comment, thanks. Wouldn't you have to provide your Revolut card details each month as it appears that they always change? If so, is the main reason why you would use Revolut the 0% exchange rate? (I.e. Gift cards have the same detail providing inconvenience but with an exchange rate fee attached for their purchase). Is my understanding correct?
            Cheers

            • +1

@SonOfATightASS: Revolut has a single and multi use virtual card. The latter would not change so I used that for Netflix and hopefully YT later.
I bought a 200TRY card recently for $22.93 + $0.66 (foreign exchange fee) using a NAB card. When I use revolut to simulate a currency exchange for 200TRY (seems like you can exchange currency and keep it in the wallet. Im not sure yet since I just signed up yesterday) it shows up as $17.13 AUD with the charges inclusive. So I think thats a win for me.
I will explore exchanging and keeping TRY in the wallet when the rate is good and see if the TRY currency gets deducted next year

Edit. I bought TRY with 1 AUD and I now have 2 accounts - AUD and TRY 11.67. It would be interesting to see if my Netflix charge next year would automatically take from my TRY account first and take from my AUD account for the balance.

After some research, I found the ff:
The card selects which balance to use in the following order:
*The local currency of the merchant/ATM e.g. if you are in Spain, it will deduct funds from your Euro balance.
*Your base currency - i.e. if you used a UK address to sign-up, your base currency will be GBP.
              *Your largest balance.
You need to have sufficient funds in one single balance in order to make a transaction. If you don't have enough funds in the balance of the local currency, it will default to your next largest balance and so on.

Due to expiring credit card, recently had the issue of not being able to update payment details without submitting OTP to a Turkish mobile number (on computer)

Even though Netflix was on hold I for some reason opened the app on tv. I got prompted on the app to update my payment details. Processed and updated straight away! Great bypass

    • +2

      This is great to know!

If ever you need to update the payment details go through the chat support and you'll be prompted to enter details there too. I had to do it twice as the first time the bank blocked the payment, Netflix didn't save the payment, allowed the payment by replying to the Bank SMS, worked second go

      • I did this too, but its random hit and mess depending on the agent you get. Some simply wont do it without OTP, so it can be a little tricky to get a rep that doesnt care.

        • Just end the chat and start a new one 😊

    • Oh the TV allowed you to bypass that? That's awesome - thanks for sharing - I need to do that too for the same reason!

    • +1

Thank you, will add this and this to FAQ

    • I just went through something similar to this yesterday, My anz credit card that I had attached to the account was expiring this month so I was all prepared to go and try and update it to new credit card, etc and having to msg support. But when I went in to update my payment method, found that I still had my BankWest platinum credit card on the account as well. I must have added it on there when I first tried to set this up a year or two ago. Swapped it to that card and bob’s your uncle!

    • Tried this today on the TV but had the message "Your account is on hold because of a problem with your last payment, etc, etc." and only gave me the option of a "Back" button.

Trying the online Netflix chat now.

Update: Tried to update CC details through the online chat too but payment didn't process. Must be my CC!

  • I do need a Steam version of this!

    • +1

I tried once, but my debit cards wouldn't go through. Same with Epic Games

  • +3

I used a Turkey Netflix gift card and applied my credit card after applying the gift card. The gift card balance ran out and Netflix has been charging $7 or so on my credit card. Another option

      • Depends on your card tier - I think the top 2 retain it (but who can afford those? hahaha)

        • im still stacking up for that tier 3 rose gold ugh

  • Be careful those who use NAB credit card… Payment goes through but then it gets rejected by gift card processor and you end-up with debit in your account without gift card…!

I have to dispute transaction with NAB to get tinny amount of money so not worth effort particularly when AUD is soo cheap

  • +2

Great post: Not that you need a new account, but anyone opting for a new account, NetFlix now lets you copy Profiles between accounts, ie: so your watch history and recommendations can be copied.

How long normally for the gift card to come through from Turgame?
Just bought it around 10min ago.

    • +1

Sometimes it comes after several minutes, sometimes a few hours. I find it’s faster at night. But it’ll eventually come, I buy from there all the time

      • Thanks for the help.

    • Did you have it yet by any chance. Ordered few days ago but still status Authentication :(

  • +5

For bypassing the mobile phone page for Part 2, what worked for me (at least signing up a few months ago) was turning off the VPN once you get to that page, so that it instead tries to verify your mobile with an Australian number instead of a Turkish one, and then turning the vpn back on after you’ve verified to complete the purchase.

Just a warning from my experience, tried buying a gift card on the turgame website, it came up with error messages (paying through Gpay using 28degrees card). So purchased through G2A got the key and the key is invalid.

Tried to contact seller through G2A and it says it can't send the message and the problem is on their end.
