Notes

  • Most VPN services have removed Indian servers due to new laws in India

  • Use ExpressVPN and connect to India via Singapore. Sign up and use the 30 Day Money Back Guarantee to get a refund

  • I can sign up for individual (all cards work, payment due sometime next month) but family sub gives me errors on all cards. Trying to find an way to fix this

  • If payment fails, try creating an Indian payment profile. You can create a new payment profile by following these steps by alcheron: go to https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings and clicking the pen icon next to "Country/Region" and a link to create a new profile should pop up. You can then add details for the India profile.

@G-rig: Cutting down on plastic waste is a great idea, and I support these efforts. I always use the cloth bags. I grab what I need, usually when I enter, and then pack my stuff with them later using the “I’m using my own bag” option. So far every cloth bag is completely free. I don’t reuse them, though — straight in the rubbish they go. In today’s world of deadly surface-spreading viruses, it’s just not sanitary to reuse bags. Anyway, I naively assumed people would appreciate the “I’m using my own bag” tip to get as many free bags as necessary

  • +3

Been using YouTube premium India since March 2019.

    • Just checked and me too

  • +3

Android users - you don't need to go through the effort. Get Vanced!

    • +2

      ReVanced is another option.

    • +1

I formatted my phone and then realised Vanced had been nuked by google, so you just saved me 30 odd dollarydoos

Just praying I'll get another 6 months out of this.

  • Do people make a new account for this? I'm fairly heavily invested in Google Ecosystem already, don't want to burn my Gmail, phone, smart home stuff etc…

Update: Just doing this instead https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12834997/redir

  • +8

Ah, Ozbargain - you never fail to deliver. I got the email for the Argentina's price hike and immediately thought to look here. Thanks!

  • +1

Use tunnelbear vpn guys and connect to Singapore.

    • Good to know

    • doesn't work, still showing Singapore dollar for me.

  • Can someone with an account tell me what's include that's not listed on the page?

  • Thank you for this, just got the email that Argentina price was going to quadruple.

    • What card did you use all mine are declining

        • Was it for family or individual subscription?

          • @roshanrbb: Good question

            • @Jklaro: All my cards are declining too, for both Family and then also for Indi plans.
I even got a virtual Wise card to do this - that failed too.

edit - I did a transaction with the Citibank 'live' on the line and i read out that Google's reason was that the bank declined the transaction. But the Citi contact center guy said no, he could clearly see that it was rejected at the merchant end.

  • Has India got the price rise already?
If not, I'll stay put in Argentina.

    • +1

not yet. but time will tell.

  • +1

is there a FREE VPN that will allow me to go through India? VPN express is not free.

    • tunnelbear

      • tunnelbar doesnt have india as connection option

  • Gonna hold off a little and see if India increases too.

    • Yeah, I might just check back next week before I go through the hassle.

  • I've been paying in Indian Rupees for the past 3 years happily. Has anyone managed to upgrade a single user to a family account? I don't have the option.

    • Fingers' crossed, but our happy times may be coming to an end soon :(

      • Wait what did I miss

        • The HUGE price hike might come to the shores of India very soon (hopefully not)

    • -2

OzBargain really should have a multi-year fraud badge. That would be a popular one

        • +4

I mean, he's advocating theft in one topic, and complaining about this being fraud in another. A remarkably slippery moral compass.

      • +4

Who is the fraud perpetrated against, India or us?…why can they deliver the service for a fraction of the price in India but not here. Don't tell me its because things are more expensive here, Google and their like offshore a lot of work to India, they move their costs about for maximum advantage. They hide their profits offshore and pay no tax. So it seems it is us who is being exploited in the name of corporate greed.

In a global marketplace we should have the freedom to shop around. It is the megacorporations that are working to restrict our consumer rights.

    • You have to cancel your individual account first then you will see the option of signing up for a family account.

      • Do you konw if one has to through all the address/payment method kerfuffle if one cancels and the resubscribes to a different package on the same account?

        • +1

I have 3 x payment profiles for different countries on my account with no issues. If that’s what you mean?

          • @Chippy47: Will give it a go as want to downgrade next month before price increase as am on family but only need personal….or I suppose I could do it today! Just no in the mood to setting up payment/address again. Sounds like there is no need. Thanks

  • +1

Whatever card i try, i get "your card issuer declined,…."

  • I connected to India through Private Internet Access however when i go to signup for premium, i get prices in IDR. I was in Bali last week but doesnt make sense why it is showing pricing there when i am back in Aus and connected to India VPN. any ideas?

    • Have you made an Indian payment address

      • I cant get to that stage….The pice should be in INR not Indonesian

        • Clear your cache - likely still getting Indonesian cookies

          • @BLB1984: No looks like error with Private Internet Access. Whe ni select IND it actually connects to Indonesia. Did a check on whats my Ip and it came up with address in Indonesia. Its just a coincidence that i was in Bali last week….

            • @maximus117: I might signup using Argentina pricing. $1.50 more than this deal but better than my current $12/mth

    • Private Internet Access gives IDR pricing, it happened to me and I had to move on

      • Yes PIA is messed up. connecting to IND actually connects to Indonesia.

      • I used an incognito window with PIA and it worked. Couldnt get the payment method to work though. Now using Turkey.

    • +1

      Use an incognito browser tab.

    • Quick Google search of PIA and India

PIA Is Leaving India Due to Data Collection Directivehttps://www.privateinternetaccess.com › blog › india-vp…
13 June 2022 — This new ruling affects VPNs directly, since any online service with physical infrastructure in India has to comply with the new legislation.

  • How do family plans work anyway? Can I add someone who lives in another state to me? or do they actually check IP or such? and if so how do you switch from single to family? I have no option on my membership page, unless I need to VPN in to see it?

    • They often check IP location and block, they once blocked my dad's account as they noticed that his IP is not matching since he lives in India(all our accounts are generated in Australia). Had to login on ipad as him, call them that he was back from holiday and no issue so far 🤞

      • Wouldn't be using it for anyone who is overseas just in Aus, but I don't have the option to 'upgrade' to family plan when viewing it normally, might have to VPN in to upgrade perhaps.

        • Try chatting with them

      • When you say blocked your Dad's account, do you mean he could no longer log in at all, or was Premium blocked?

        • Premium was locked. He started seeing ads

  • +1

Was charged $3.74 for my family plan on 11th….now I feel cheated

  • noob question - once I am all signed up (and payment went through), I don't need the VPN anymore and can just sign in on my Samsung TV, yeah?

  • Hmm this arg increase makes me glad I stuck to India for the last year and a half despite arg being a touch cheaper…

  • +2

Didnt work for me, didnt accept 2x different cards no matter how many times i tried

  • +2

It keeps on declining for me as well

  • +2

    This is failing for me..

"Your card issuer declined your payment. Declined payments are often due to insufficient funds or card status. Check your card or select a different payment method."

    Tried on 4 different cards

    • I found Ing to be good in the past. I haven't tried to change from Argentina to India as yet.

  • Cheers OP. Signed up to the yearly payment plan on my UP card to lock in any price increase - tad bit higher conv rate @A$ 26.84 - still pretty good.

  • nice, worked well, thanks.

btw used urban VPN, its free. Slow, but does the job.

  • +7

No need to rush to migrate to India.

The new price is not effective until 21 NOVEMBER. Everyone should have another direct debit cycle (with the current/cheaper price) in Argentina or Turkey.

This also gives it time to see if there is a India price rise coming up.

  • Can anyone share wear they are getting spotify from TY

  • I've tried SurfShark, Tunnelbear (no India), VPN Unlimited (no India).

Aha - this worked in Safari on a Mac

    https://www.urban-vpn.com/locations/india-vpn/

Just over $2 a month if you pay annually. Might save the price rise too.

    • which bank card do you use?

      • Yes, that's the next hurdle. Trying 28 Degrees which did work with Argentina, but not with the Indian address.

  • If I change my main account with family members already from Argentina to Indian, does all the member needs to change too or once they in family it doesn't matter as long as main account pays/changes appropriately.

    • Good question, I'd like to know too..

  • +7

I seem to not be able to get any credit cards working for the family plan. It works a charm for the individual plan but not for the family plan.

Not sure if it's this, but:

    On India's Google support page:

To process automatic or recurring payments, we’re required to set up an e-mandate on your card due to a Reserve Bank of India e-mandate notification. However, not all banks support this regulation yet.

Per the new RBI guidelines, the [debit/visa] cards [from following banks] which support recurring payments are:

    • HDFC Bank
    • ICICI Bank
    • Axis Bank
    • SBI Bank
    • Citibank
    • Kotak Bank
    • Bank of Baroda
    • IDFC Bank
    • Yes Bank
    • RBL Bank
    • IndusInd Bank
    • Standard Chartered Bank
    • AU Small Finance Bank
    • SBM Bank
    • Union Bank of India
    • Bank of India

I'm still looking at alternatives to bypass or otherwise

    • +3

This is what made me had to move to Argentina last time. They could not charge my CC. tried every single physical or virtual I have but failed. so, my family plan was terminated and had to move.

    • +2

Has anybody tried family plan with Oz Citi card?

      • +6

Citibank card failed when trying to pay in INR. Works when paying in AUD. But you can only select to pay in AUD on the prepaid plans, not the subscription plans.

I used to have the monthly subscription in INR on the Citibank card, but changed last month to Argentina. Now trying to change back to India, the same card doesn't work anymore. Probably due to those new RBI rules for recurring payments, which Citibank Australia doesn't meet.

I contacted Citibank when I received the failed transactions this time, and they confirmed that it wasn't Citibank blocking the transactions and there was no record of them. So it seems to be the payment gateway that Google are using in India that is blocking non-compliant cards from making payments in INR.

        • Ta muchly for the info.

        • I am paying in INR using Citi bank card

      • @tesla I am

        • @ScoMosas - are you on an individual or family plan? Yearly or subscription?
          TIA

    • +4

I'm messaging Up support to see if it comes up as a suspicious transaction on their system.

Seeing if they can let the transaction through if it's coming up as blocked on their end.

      • +2

Let us know if you can do subscription with Up.

    • Interesting, I've had an Indian Family subscription for years, charging to my ING Visa debit card and never had a problem. This month's subscription was debited without issue last week.

    • I used my Indian card and it worked.. tried few Aussie cards and they were declined

    • +1

I've got a long-standing family plan, INR, monthly, citibank debit.
At some point last year, it started being a problem, and needed monthly manual payment (well, confirmation of CVV).
Problem on mobile, but would try repeatedly, it would "hang", but after several attempts (showing no success/fail) Citibank app would prompt with payment made.

Now, it's finally dead. Spinning circles, no success.

  • +1

For any of you who can't pay via credit card. You can try to sign up on your android phone and subscribe in the app then pay via google pay (linked to your aussie cc) . This is how I did it last year. Not sure about apple pay.

    • no, it's said the card is not supported.
you can't add you card to google pay when your payment profile location is India

  • What's wrong with vanced

    • +1
      • Have to have a jailbroken device
      • Not available on all platforms
      • Need to install untrusted software on your device and provide it with your google account
      • +3

but it works incredibly well on android, no root needed, and microg is open source and uses official google apis to login. so not sure why that's considered insecure. been using vanced/revanced for years it works so well

  • +1

    Got it working!

So on my iPhone I installed ExpressVPN
    Connected to India via Singapore
Opened up a browser page (used Brave) youtube.com/premium
I went through with individual membership 139m
I had my cards saved in there from earlier attempt, selected ING card
Pushed me with redirection you to the secure payment vendor.

    Done!

    • did you change from Argentina?

      • Nope, fresh sign-up for me

    • Tried, didnt work

  • if you only plan to watch youtube via browser then just use an add blocker like Ublock origin add-on with Firefox or use Librewolf (https://librewolf.net/) browser(addblocker inbuilt).

  • I used UrbanVPN for India VPN. None of my Australian cards worked. I had to call my family in India and put their card instead.
