Can See Neighbours Having a Shower from My Window

We have a double story townhouse next to our house and their whole family has a shower without the blinds down. We see all there family naked every night.

We want it to stop because it’s awkward and we have children.

I have left them 2 letters in their letter box and they still don’t shut the blinds.

I can’t block out the view since they are a double story close to the fence.

What can I do? Can I speak to the council/police?

      non anglo saxon europeans?

      • Why would you say that?

        • +1

Plenty of cultures don't care about non-sexual nudity, where it isn't shameful or something to hide

Makes sense considering humans lived in groups and families with constant nudity for most of history, in reality we're the weird ones

  • +11

Send address, need to check it out for myself.

  • +4

shine a laser at the window while they shower

    • +1

I have thought of this haha

  • +2

Get a long extension pole paint roller and just paint over their window with 'frost paint' or something one day when they're not home.

Or point an obvious camera direct at the window that they notice but definitely is not plugged in.

See if that gets you any traction.

    • I like this idea

  • +12

Take photos (of the adults) to leave with note highlighting the "issue" ;)

Sit at your alfresco with mates, cheer and toast them the next time the adults shower :P

  • +5

How did either house get approval overlooking without frosted, privacy or bunker windows?

And if they're old, well, you know what you bought.

I walked out my back door the other day to put rubbish in the bin starkers. Neighbour was up a ladder working on his garage. Surprise! 🎉😀

OP needs to put up a screen.

      • +5

If theyre in their alfresco area as they claim and can see clearly into a second storey window (which i doubt, considering bathroom window height standards over the last 100 years), a simple line of sight screen would suffice.

The same would do if it's at ground level but attached to the fence outside the 'offending' opening

If, however it's double storey to double storey then someone has failed to meet the building code. Considering the OP mentions alfresco, i hazard they are in a new build and therefore should have no overlooking problems.

It's their problem to fix, not the neighbours.

    • Overlooking Regulation 419 in the Building Code does not apply.

The regulation is to stop you (the newest building) looking into someone's house. It only applies to direct line of sight from a room in the house, deck or balcony.

The nude neighbours don't need it, since their bathroom isn't having into an open area of OPs house.

OP doesn't need it since the viewing location is the backyard.

It’s only having showers so it could definitely get a lot worse(or better!). This reminds me of a funny story back in my high school days. We had sleepovers at one of our classmates because his neighbours, live directly opposite and 1 floor below, would be having sex with the lights on in full view and screaming loudly every second night.

    • What did you do on their nights off?

      • +2

Wait patiently for the next night. Peeping Tom 101.

      • -1

Chipping the jizz off the furniture.

    That's Disgusting… Where?

  • +4

i wish i got this lucky

    • +1

You can just ring your neighbour and tell them you're about to have a shower if they want to watch.

  • Set up a projector projecting into their bathroom displaying uncomfortable content

    • Like someone cracking walnuts?

  • +4

OP has already confirmed that they are seeing through frosted glass so the most OP would get to see should be a dark silhouette not naked bodies contrary to what OP is claiming. Yes it is a bit awkward but not sure what the big issue is unless they are rubbing their wet "body parts" on the glass for OP to see which I'd assume is not the case here.

    • even if they have the lights on ?

    • +1

Can definitely see every detail in colour with light on.
I don’t know what type of frost the glass is but doesn’t seem normal.

      • +2

If you are seeing that much detail then the glass may not be frosted at all and could very well be some cheap tinted version. I'd suggest you take couple of photos and print them in full colour on A4 and leave it at their door. For good measure you can even caption them with big bold writing with whatever you need to convey them. Hopefully they will get the message loud and clear this time.

      • +1

maybe they don't know that you can buy frosted glass film for less than $20? An hour of work and you don't have to replace any hardware -

If you ever write them another letter maybe include that lol

        • +1

Thank you I included your idea!

  • +1

Pull up chair open couple of coldies and enjoy the spectacle.

    Or move.

  • -2

Ring the hospital and ask if their babies come in what sort of brand of underpants.

  • +1

Don't know how much 'detail' you can see, but Check the laws on indecent exposure, ie being naked knowing they can be seen by you and your kids and knowing it's causing offence.

    • +13

Wouldnt get up. Owners have the right to be naked inside their own house.

Can only imagine the smirks from police.

      • +1

I don't think getting up is the problem.

    • +2

They’ve said the ‘whole family’ can be seen. If there’s any underage children, OP would likely be in trouble not the neighbours.

    • +1

Exposure requires at least 1 party in a public environment.

Neighbours can submit to the police the picture of OP staring into their bathroom window since it interferes with their private enjoyment on their own land.

    • Won’t somebody think of the children!?!

  • +2

Print this out massive, so they'll be able to see, and stick it to your window facing their window: https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u2mrHNceeMw/TwUyQFJLgnI/AAAAAAAAD…

  • +7

Make sure the real estate agent is aware of this benefit when you sell your house. By the way, do you have any room for rent?

  • +2
    1. Get a video camera with good quality zoom
    2. Get a huge TV and place it in your window
    3. Point video camera at the neighbour's window
    4. Plug video camera into TV

When they see themselves on a huge TV screen it might hit home what they are showing.

    • +1

They've ignored OP's 2 letters so they may well be exhibitionists

    • +8

      5 Get arrested.

      • -2

it's not illegal to point security cameras at your neighbours property, pretty sure a few posts here have covered that

        • +3

Illegal to record someone performing a "private act". I think the neighbours have an expectation to not be film naked within their own bathroom.

          https://www.criminaldefencelawyers.com.au/criminal-law/offen…

Also pretty sure having a video of strangers children showering gunna get you picked up on child pornography.

          • -2

@sheamas88: This isn't filming, nothing is being recorded. It is just being used as a clear mirror

            • +1

@Quantumcat: I mis-spoke when I specified "record", the law says "film", it doesn't distinguish between it being permanently stored or not. If you think that's incorrect then show a source that says its the storage of the video that's the illegal part.

It is just being used as a clear mirror

If you're only using it as a mirror, then just use a mirror. Nothing illegal about having a mirror setup.

              • -2

@sheamas88: The problem is the mirror won't face the right way, and they will see themselves as twice as far away as what OP can see.

In any case, the camera is in their own house. It can't be a private act if you can see it from your own house. You are allowed to have security cameras that have your neighbour's houses in their field of view

                • @Quantumcat:

It can't be a private act if you can see it from your own house.

The link I sent you literally defines what a "Private Act" is defined by the law, no where does it state that it doesn't count if it's on your own property.

In fact even if the camera was in your OWN bathroom then it would still be illegal because people have an expectation of privacy in places like a bathroom or toilet. It doesn't matter if you own the property or not, the law still applies.

                  https://techsafety.org.au/blog/legal_articles/legal-guide-to…

Again, if you have evidence then show it. Clearly you don't know what the law is and would rather just make it up in your head.

                  • @sheamas88: Undone by your own link.

When is it an offence to use an optical surveillance device

Generally, if the installation, use or maintenance of an optical surveillance device involves:

                    entry onto or into the premises or vehicle without the express or implied consent of the owner or occupier of the premises or vehicle;

(you are installing it in your own house, no entry to neighbours needed)

                    or
interference with the vehicle or other object without the express or implied consent of the person having lawful possession or lawful control of the vehicle or object,

                    (no object involved)

it will be an offence to knowingly install, use or maintain an optical surveillance device on or within premises or a vehicle or on any other object, to record visually or observe the carrying on of an activity.

Maximum penalty: 100 penalty units or imprisonment for 5 years, or both.

                    For example:

It is an offence for a person to break into his ex-partner’s house or enter her property without her consent to install a surveillance camera.
It is an offence for a person to break into his ex-partner’s vehicle to install a surveillance camera.
When can an optical surveillance device be used

As long as the installation, use or maintenance of an optical surveillance device does not involve the unauthorised entry onto/into a premise or vehicle or unauthorised interference with a vehicle or other object, it is not an offence under section 8 of this Act.

For example: A person may generally install surveillance cameras on their property.

                • @Quantumcat: Use a mirror with digital zoom then

  • +1

that's weird as, usually bathroom windows are high up or made so people can't see in

go and talk to them tell the husband his d*ck is small or large, or he has a nice ass, or alternatively say his wife is good looking

  • -4

Just imagine if those couples found this thread LoL 😂.
They might end up to OP's actual HOUSE NAKED, To be honest if its a hot chick probably wont be any problem just as long as no mum or kids nearby 😉

    • +2

      Is it school holidays?

  • If it’s not clear glass window, it’s not Full HD or 4K, so there is nothing to worry about. I would really enjoy the clear and clean glass window.

  • +5

I do this though I'm not your neighbour. Got a dad bod, look or don't, it's your choice, I don't mind. Units a few streets over actually have a view of my toilet too lol

  • That's weird, my neighbours don't like it when I peer into their shower ?!

  • +5

This is what Neighbours should have been. Instead the entire show consisted of boring conversations that ended with one person leaving the room, and the other remaining with a concerned look on their face, contemplating the nothingness of what just happened.

  • +1

Call the police, and ask to be put through to the nude department.

Can you plant anything to block it out? You don't need much space.
I bought a few lattices to block my neighbours view into my alfresco area and grew a choko vine. They'll grow anywhere (even shade) and in almost anything (in terms of soil quality - ive never fed it, and it grows in pretty much clay), you get easy produce (rain is sufficient water for mine) and it grew so quick, it pretty much covered the whole side (7 - 8m) in a few months. They are also really easy to start (just buy one, or get one off someone who has a vine - but they might have finished fruiting by now)

Other perennials you could do include Passionfruit, kiwi or certain beans (like Scarlet Runner) - I think they are reasonably quick, but not as fast as Choko (or at least that was the case for me)

OR you could do flowers/vines (jasmine, bougainvillea, ivy) if 'free' food isn't your jam.

If you can't support a lattice, you can opt for a fence extender + vine.

OR you could put some trees there if there is enough sun. If the space is small, get a big pot or a massive grow bag. I have a bunch of trees that do really well in grow bags (they are cheaper than pots cause you can get them in bulk, but are less sturdy - great for giving air to roots though)

Just make sure whatever you pick is not deciduous, otherwise winter will be fun lol. The lattice keeps a lot of the vision out anyway, but just to be safe…

    • Thank you for your response.

I have tried plant a tree but had no luck it’s in 100% shade.

I might try the vine idea. Where did you attach the lattice on your alfresco or fence?

We are on a slope and them being double story is going to be a challenge growing something so tall.

      • Gracilis bamboo will block 2 stories easy and grows anywhere. But unless you pay big dollars for a mature plant, it's going to take a couple of years.

      • Damn - yeh, trees usually suck in shade.

I attached it to the poles under my alfresco. If your fence is wooden and secure, you might be able to get away with drilling it on the fence.

I have a neighbour that does that on her side of the fence cause she grows veggies in spring/summer, but with metal wire (like dog mesh). She doesn't do it that high though (i wouldn't care anyway, because I get free beans and melon all the time lol).

Otherwise concrete (blocks) and posts will do a good job.

From experience, if you opt for the wooden lattice from bunnings, best reinforce it or it might will come apart when if your chokos fruit + the added stress from the wind OR make your life easier and just go with the plastic one or do metal. Even if it's arguably not as pretty, it'll be covered in vines anyway.

You can have a look at fence extensions and make something similar but higher if you are crafty, or see if you can find a way to order taller ones from somewhere if you want to play it safe.

You can check with council first before you do it - generally it's 2m max height for boundary fences BUT there are exceptions to non solid screens (includes lattices, trellis) which means technically you can go as high as you want with it (assuming it's safe). I guess for normal neighbours it could be considered rude to build a massive lattice right next to the fence without talking to them, but given your situation, I think all clothes gloves are off at this point.

    • I can’t find choko seeds or plants anywhere

      • You want to find the fruit, not the seed.

Asian vegetable stores sometimes have them, and sometimes woolies/coles in the cold vegetable section (sometimes in a bucket near the zucchini and lettuce and stuff). Otherwise, look on gumtree/fb marketplace. If you lived in Sydney, I would give you one if I have one on the vine lol - I know some neighbours and friends that have them too, so maybe ask around and someone might give you one.

Find the biggest, greenest one with as little blemishes and leave it out. After a week or so, a vine will pop out the top and you can plant it straight into the ground. Just make sure you loosen the soil and get rid of the weeds and grass around it to give it the best shot. If it's dry, make sure you water it while it's establishing - after half a year you won't ever worry about it again lol AND you'll start to have crops, which is always exciting

        Hope this helps

  • -1

Just don't look. Divert your eyes, teach your kids not to stare. Ignore the view and pretend they're not there. Do not practise voyeurism - or do - whatever gets you going, you do you.

    Move houses.

  • How hot is the wife?

    • Very hairy

      • Is that why you keep looking?

  • Are you sure you sent the two letters to the correct neighbour? Did you inlude your own address, they could have thought you were joking if you didn't word it correctly.

    "I can see you shower
    - Your neighbour"

Will likely make them think you are joking

  • +1

Should have mentioned in the letter about getting off on watching them shower. Bet they'd pull the blinds down then.

    • +2

      Nek minnit, SWAT raid.

    • that actually might work, unless it's their kink… then it might make it worse lol

Probably need the Ozbargain crew to help verify your claims. Whereabouts?

  • had this happen a few years ago. not being a perv, i have spoke n to the parents and the adult kids about it and they laugh it off.

for some reason the ladies love to walk around their bedroom with lingerie without the blinds closed, they are fully open and drawn.

i dare say they know, i dont know why, do they get the kicks, im sure.

    • +5

If wearing bikinis on a crowded beach is not a problem then wearing lingerie in a bedroom shouldn't be. Also note that lingerie are worn to look sexy for others to look at.

      • +1

Lingerie to some, underwear to others. Either way, it’s not that much different from a bikini.

  • +2

Surely this should be under that Side Hustle thread…. Unbelievable how lucky some people can get with natural views…. Lol

  • +2

I'm a fan of having a picture of a face watching them stuck to your window at all times. Maybe a cardboard cutout on the alfresco too - sometimes bottleos just turf them when they're done so you could ask your local if they have one you can have, or to save one if they're still using it.

Having those up all day will be a reinforcement of the visibility. They being said, it sounds more like a defect with your house than theirs that you can see into their property. Many councils won't approve such types of construction these days without privacy measures such as screens on the dwelling that can see into the other

    • +2

If the glass is lightly frosted, and the bathroom is lit from the inside they probably can’t see what is outside.

  • If you hate it that much, don't want to make any changes to your house AND have cash lying about tell them you'll pay to get their window frosted/tinted properly

  • +1

You and the family should just get your deck chairs out one night and a big family bowl of popcorn and make it really obvious you are watching as if it's a drive in cinema… they will think your a bunch of creeps and will close their blinds out of disgust… problem solved.

  • +1

    What is the actual problem?
You have to look at it to see it. If you find it offensive, don't look.

  • hmmm, I'm not sure…can you post a vid…or two…plz?

  • +1

Stand there with a full blown erection and a smile (or get your husband to)

    • I think lady boners are funnier. stick with that.

  • I have left them 2 letters in their letter box and they still don’t shut the blinds.

Send them a third letter with photographs.

  • +1

This couldn't be too frequent though - they would have to be in their bathroom naked and you or your family happen to be looking up towards their window. The timing of it too, for example my wife showers at 7ish in the morning and i shower at 11ish pm.

  • How about sort yourself out and mind your own business.

    • It could be a sign of a concerned citizen ensuring their neighbours children aren’t found on nefarious internet sites.

      • If only it was.
