Can See Neighbours Having a Shower from My Window

We have a double story townhouse next to our house and their whole family has a shower without the blinds down. We see all there family naked every night.

We want it to stop because it’s awkward and we have children.

I have left them 2 letters in their letter box and they still don’t shut the blinds.

I can’t block out the view since they are a double story close to the fence.

What can I do? Can I speak to the council/police?

    Pull down your own blinds?

    • Doesn’t solve the problem.

Our kids are playing in the yard and we spend a lot of time at our alfresco which has view to it.

      • +14

Install something on your side of the fence that blocks the view.

        • +132

Avert your gaze. Nude isn't rude.

          • +55

@Scrooge McDuck: This is what I don’t get. If they are nude and it’s confronting to look at… “don’t look”.

It’s like the people that sit at home and are offended by something on the TV. Don’t write in to complain about it, just swap channels.

            • +3

@pegaxs: It's not as easy as it sounds. And it's annoying to be restricted in your own house.

              • +29

@Bargain-er: So the neighbours should be restricted in their own house?
What if they have health issues and keep the window open to prevent mould?

The OP needs to mind their own.

              • @Bargain-er: Are you OP?
Or do you have exactly the same 'problem'?

            • -8

@pegaxs: The window is part of your house. It is unfair to not be able to look at it. With your TV example, imagine the TV is as big as a window and it turns itself onto that channel multiple times a day. Now you have to try to not be looking at the TV when it decides to change to that channel. Very different to being able to choose to watch something else. If the OP had any control there would not be naked people out his window (his equivalent of choosing not to watch that channel).

              • +6

@Quantumcat: OP is saying it's also about kids playing outside, so for the OP's argument 'part of your house' view doesn't hold, unless you want to make everything in view from a yard controllable by the resident.
In addition, it sounds a lot more unfair that the neighbours are not able to use their home the way they want. Telling people how they use their bathroom sounds WAAAAAAAAAAY more invasive than telling some not to look in one direction for 20 minutes in a day (towards a thing they don't like in the first place).

There's no such thing as living in isolation from all others. In this case the person who wants things to change and the person who can most easily make a change, are the same person, so it sounds that's pretty clear cut.

                • +1

@MrJP: That makes it even worse - you can't use your backyard at all unless you only face one direction. At least walls around a window keep it out of your peripheral vision as long as you aren't facing directly towards the window.

                  • -1

@Quantumcat: You can only stand and look in one way in your backyard? Sorry man, I didn't know you had a disability

                    • -1

@MrJP: If you face any of the other three sides you're either looking directly at the neighbour's house or have it in your peripheral vision.

                      • +2

@Quantumcat: BS. The only situation that is even remotely possible is if your neighbour's bathroom window is wider than your entire yard and their window is as wide as their entire bathroom, and even then you'd be exaggerating.

But let's look at your larger point. You're suggesting that every person with a yard should be able to tell everyone else in that street how they are allowed to live (at least anything that is visible) all day everyday, because else the yard owner might see something they don't feel like seeing, and the yard-owner wouldn't be able to fully enjoy their yard anymore as it would be unreasonable for the yard-owner to not look away from their yard all the time?

Yeah, you've completely convinced me that's a reasonable solution.

                        • -5

@MrJP: The only change in their life required is closing the blinds when they shower - hardly asking them to do an Olympic marathon. Most people I know get along with their neighbours and are happy to do small things for each other. I feel like closing the blinds is the very least they can do. Let me guess, you probably park in front of your neighbour's bins on garbage day and own a dog that barks constantly?

              • +2

@Quantumcat: Yes, imagine there were naked people on my monitor (for some reason)…

                Outlandish and absurd of course…

            • +1

@pegaxs: Prob is, to look away, you've already seen. Happened once to me 30 years ago and I still have that image burned in my brain.

Surely you have a unique view that’ll impact the value of your property, time to put on the market for profit.

        Feature: Alfresco with unique views.

        • +10

Lol, depends on how good/bad the unique views are.

          • @Bargain-er: Quite certain a REA will MSU to make anything sound attractive.

Install a large and very noticeable fake CCTV camera pointing towards them, then watch how quickly the issue is resolved.

      • +2

Rent the property out on AirBnb and advertise the free nudity. The voyeurs will lap it up.

        • +4

OP will then become homeless and he will start searching for places to stay nearby on AirBnb and will see his own ad and book the room and end up living there again.

      • -1

You can point the camera at your own property or public place only!

        • +3

You can point a fake CCTV anywhere you like, it is not unlawful to do so.

What one does inside thier house is thier own business!
Even if they run around nude all day.
Its nothing to do with OP and OP should mind their own business or just ….

There really needs to be a Youtube unfurl or something for these forums. Like, it doesn't need to embed the video or anything, but at least if it rips the video title (and maybe a bit of the description) whenever someone posts a Youtube link then us poor wagies stuck behind corporate VPNs wouldn't have to play the risky-click game.

      • -2

Your username is a clue 🕵️‍♀️

      • +5

Maybe do some work instead of browsing OZB on the work VPN?

          😂

        • +17

If you browse ozbargain at work, the bargains are even better value, as you are being paid to find them.

        • Oi

      • Why not just skip it?

        • +1

But then I feel bad. @AustriaBargain, and to a hilariously-greater extent @jv, spend a lot of time searching for YouTube vids to use to respond to people's takes in lieu of using the Queen's English the way our forefathers intended.

      • +1

Plenty of chrome extensions that do exactly that

  • +2

    Is their bathroom window frosted?

      • +8

hmmm …. a couple of paintball shots should do the trick for DIY opacity ;)

      • +17

It's a silhouette only I'm sure. Deal with it.

        • +1

          It’s not a silouette.

            @Veebee88: Dangling bits?

@Veebee88: You’re looking pretty hard to see pimples.
Is an hour a day where you can’t look in their has such a big deal?

      • +5

Maybe they have the window the wrong way around?

      • +3

Is it a new build? I cant imagine something like being signed off by the builder/engineer. In our build we even had to put physical window screens to block the view. Something doesnt add up

        • +1

Have a new build, frosted windows are barely frosted and pretty much useless.

        • +5

I imagine it is pretty common problem. Friend of mine has a walk in robe with a window which is at the front of the house, she would get dressed in there in the morning - naturally with the light on. The window is frosted and they figured noone could see in until one day they went for a walk in the morning at like 5am and accidentally left the light on, when they came home they realised that when it is dark and the light is on you can see straight through and they had been getting dressed in there for like 2 years without realising people could see in certain circumstances..

That was a newish build, I forget how they resolved it.

    Giggity

  • +18

Why not actually tell them rather than leaving a note? It’ll be awkward, but just do it

    • +68

      Leave a photograph…

    • +1

I'd rather receive a note and continue never talking to them again. People post all the time about their crazy neighbour drama, but no one ever posts about becoming good friends with your neighbours and how it enriched their lives. Neighbours were only socially necessary before the internet. You're lucky if you have a cool neighbour you can talk to and help each other out, but you shouldn't count on "knowing" your neighbour not being more trouble than it's worth.

      • +15

I have attempted to try to become friends at the last 3 places I lived and at my current place have finally succeeded. It is great. We hang out for chats, collect each other's parcels on request or when we know the other is out when something is delivered, complain about the neighbour over the back to each other etc.

It's so nice having a friendly person next door that I'll always at least try for it to see if it's possible

      • +4

That is a pretty sad situation.
I've been reasonably good friends with neighbours at various residences we've lived in, to the extent we keep in touch with some even though we both moved away 15 years ago.
Apart from the company, sense of community, etc., we (and our neighbours) know that we will help each other out whenever needed. Bins out/in, keep an eye out when away on holidays, water the garden, etc.

  • +35

I mean at some point, if you've told them and they have no interest in stopping… then it's their perogative no? There is nothing wrong or illegal with what they're doing and if they really don't give a (profanity) then…

I guess it's something you need to deal with and appropriately teach your children. Although it might awaken some things earlier than expected for them…

    • +3

There is nothing wrong or illegal with what they're doing

In some states, that's actually incorrect: whether or not it's illegal depends on what's reasonable: if a stranger can only see you by deliberately using a telescope to peek into your toilet window or whatever, that's fine. But if you live opposite the primary school and like to stand naked in front of your bay windows when the kids walk by, it doesn't matter that your in your own house, since a reasonable person would just put some clothes on, be naked in some other room, or just close the blinds.

      • +1

So what's your advice for OP on what to try?

Might be costly in doughnuts though with various cops having to stay over to gather evidence in their time off taking turns 24-7 to ensure a tight case?

  • +35

If the next door Mother / Daughter(s) are hot then enjoy the show.

You have warned them, there's not much more you can do.

If my kids are hanging around, I'd just tell them to go away Dad's very busy.

    • How do you know that the OP isn't a heterosexual female?

      • +27

Then if the dad / son are hot, then enjoy the show…..

    • +5

Why is it usually not hot people that have their bits out like this?

It reminds me of being in a Japanese onsen at a hotel. On my first visit, I didn't really know the custom.

An older bloke explained it to me but I then saw him in the restaurant at breakfast.

It's weird seeing people in a restaurant who have seen you naked but you get used to it quickly.

    • +1

    1. Don't look
    2. Pull your blinds down or close the curtains
    3. It's just nudity. Don't freak out about it. We're all nude some part of the day.
  • It's hard?

    Ms.paint diagram?

  • Wow there's really all sorts of people aren't there… in today's age where privacy is a big deal and most people hide in shame if nudes are exposed and here we have a family not caring a thing!
