      Keh?
This is a hardware item. Windows is an operating system. This hardware item can run Windows.

  • Now do these runout MacBook Pro's qualify for a free upgrade to Mountain Lion??

    http://www.apple.com/au/osx/uptodate/

    • yes they would

    • +7

      …on or after 11 June 2012.

      so yes, BUT

Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between 11 June 2012 and the date when Mountain Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from the OS X Mountain Lion release date to make a request.

Just remember to put it in your reminder… or a post-it note stuck on your forehead. That works too.

      • But mountain lion is only around $20 so dont make the decision on that basis only.

        • -1

Probably going to be closer to $30 for us Au$$ies.

        • +3

          $20.99

    • Just filled out the form now to wait n see :)

  • -3

People need to ignore the Apple logo and see if what's under the hood is the best bang for their buck. Apple now uses Wintel architecture anyway. It'll run windows, and a Dell machine will run Mac OS.

There are a lot of Apple obsessed zombies out there. Think different.

    • +3

      I agree with you.

But it is still a bargain, not a neg…

    • +1

      Not worthy of a neg

    • +2

while i totally agree with the viewpoint, but still reckon you are just trying to make yourself look like a genius (and the rest of us are all idiots).

      • +1

Also know as a "holier-than-thou" attitude.

    • +2

Wow there is an Epic war of votes in this comment, but still remains neutral.. wonder how long will that last.. 12 aside atm.

      • now 19 negs and 18 positives neutrality at its finest

    • +3

no Dell machine will run OS X as smoothly and perfectly as a native one. Hackintoshes aren't the best way to get a OS X machine.

    • +1

you ever heard of a profession call "design" it's this whole new field where product designers create objects with desirable qualities beyond technical specs. qualities like form, aesthetic, emotion, usability, simplicity… and as far as i'm concerned people can do what ever they want with their buck.

    • +1

But Apple's got one of the better build qualities around, and is backed by a pretty good warranty. You will need to find a decent Thinkpad for it to comparable.

There are a lot of Apple hating zombies out there. Think different.

    • +2

Traditionally Apple have charged more for their hardware, but they have always made very good machines. I don't think there is that much of an Apple 'tax' these days. It's a little hard to compare because nobody else makes the beautiful glass track pad's that just glide so well and have such a high resolution. Also as rugged as a thinkpad is, the screen quality is just (probably can't use the appropriate explicative). Whereas all the Mac's have brilliant IPS panels.

The dell home range are very cheap for the headline specs - CPU/RAM etc. But they have rubbish screens and not great build quality. Their business range have much better screens and overall quality - and surprise, surprise, they are between 2 and 4 times the price. Same for HP envy, Sony Z series etc etc

So, it can be tricky to compare wintel to mac precisely. You could certainly match RAM/CPU and finder a cheaper wintel machine. But I think you would be very hard pressed to find one with 7hr battery life, excellent screen etc etc for the same price.

I've ordered the MBP+retina with 16G RAM and will plug in 2 high-res screens to it - there isn't another notebook out there that can do that, or even come close. Where does that leave your comparison.

Apart from the excellent quality, great service (did I mention free training in store), and reasonable (agreed not cheap) price, there is the not inconsiderable difference of Mac OS X.
This can be a real pain, if your set in your ways as a windows person. However, investing some time to take advantage of all OSX features is really rewarding. I started to list them, but there are so many advantages and only 1 thing I prefer on windows - so snipped that bit. Instead I'll just say that, very few Mac people ever go back, and we run up a VM for windows, if we need some windows specific software. I have a lot of VM's because I develop for different versions of Windows and Linux and need to run my software on each. I've tried every version of windows, several version of linux and OSX.

What I want most is a machine that doesn't hang or have strange slow downs for god knows what viral activity, runs blazing well 99% of the time, backs up everything continuously. My (like most professional in the western world) time is worth a lot more than the kind of time wasting I've had with many windows machines. So, I'm firmly in favour of the Mac. Maybe you call that fan boyism. I think it's customer satisfaction.

    • +4

So only for USB 2 you are negging this deal? …LOL

    • +6

You actually laughed out loud because it has usb2.0? Really?

      • If you have lots of stuff to transfer around, USB 2.0 is a problem.

        • +4

          Have you heard of Thunderbolt?

        • Want to sell me a Thunderbolt Pen Drive Cheap ?

  • +4

Thanks! Just ordered for the wife :)

    • +4

Same here! This will keep her out of my hair for a while.

        • +27

Cool story bro. Did you buy her outright too?

        • just fail. lol

  • +5

for an apple Macbook is a good price.
But its abit hard to justify spending $999 for something with an i5 processor and no dedicated graphics.
Im sure you can get a Windows based notebook with i5 or i7 (Sandy Bridge or possibly even Ivy Bridge) + dedicated graphics + USB3.0 around or under $999.
Keep your options open thats all.

  • +1

I'd wait till the current retina display and flash storage MBP's are discontinued or superseded by "better" products.

Seems like good price if you want old technology?

    • Surely once they are superseded the retina/flash MBPs will be 'old technology'?

Hey it may just be a rumour but I like it.

  • oh no, I'm so confused right now, to buy or not to buy

    • +8

when you're confused buy or not to buy, always Buy

      • It's apple always buy! then when a refreshed version comes out buy again! Keep the apple people happy by buying and making you poor. Remember!

        • So whats your point.

Every product gets updated, so you wait constantly….

Really? So add something to the conversation rather than being a troll

    • +3

If you change your mind I'm sure you could get most of your money back on Ebay / Gumtree

      • -6

Plenty of iWannabes on eBay/Gumtree who will pay overs for outdated tech. Especially Apple stuff, just to be seen with the device. The upside is that this item has good resale value. Thank goodness for chumps

  • +4

Special price on the old MacBook Airs…? Comeon Rep…

  • Would an i5 running OS X run about the same as an i7 running Windows? Does that sort of comparison still apply these days?

Looking at running creative suite etc on either this machine or a mac mini. Never used a mac.

    Thoughts?

    • Mac os is a lighter OS than windows, but when you're talking about creative programs (photoshop, premier, lightroom, maya or other cads) processing power will matter more. Mac books are build for stamina, not raw power.

  • Steve Jobs was apparently entombed with 100 of these to service him in the afterlife.

    • He is buddhist, so he would be re-encarnated by now.

      • +2

yeh probably as a windows 7 pc haha

  • Ordered one. Yes it would be nice to have USB 3.0 but this is a big enough price drop to make it a good buy. My current 15" Macbook Pro is 4 years old now and at this price the 13" is a good replacement. You're always going to get arguments about non Mac notebooks being cheaper. I have had far fewer hardware issues with my Macbooks, no virus issues, and not had to rebuild the OS countless times because of it slowing down over time like Windows seems to do. So for me it's worth paying the extra for the slightly older but tried and tested Apple hardware.

For extra 200-300$ woulda got a samsung i7 series 3 with usb 3.0 with double the ram and blueray. heaps more bank for buck!

      http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/550p5c-s02au-samsung-550…

      • is the i5 in mbp 13 the second generation? is the i7 in samsung second generation, too?

the first generation i5 in my toshiba is slowwwwwwww. the second generation i7 in my dell mobile workstation (company laptop) is FAST!

        • This is i7 3RD Gen!.. edit: this model doesnt have blueray but u can get it on a upgrade model

  • Can somebody tell me the configuration of this DS Macbook model?
    Thanks

    • Entry level 13" 2.4GHz Dual Core i5
      500GB HDD @ 5400RPM
      4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM
      Integrated Graphics
Running Mac OSX Lion (with free upgrade to Mountain Lion when it's released later in the year)

  • i asked at apple store.. if u buy a macbook pro 13 (usb 3…) with lion then u will get a free upgrade. But I don't think this model will bc it's the old or runout model.. but Mt Lion is ony $21…

    • you will get a free upgrade to mt lion

      http://www.apple.com/au/osx/uptodate/

  • I rather get hp envy 15 with ivybridge from us for that price

  • +1

Want to buy, but spent too much buying previous OZB deals. Not enough money left to pay Apple Tax anymore.

  • are the keyboards on these backlit?

  • Are The Good Guys obligated to price-match? If so, combined with the leftover Auspost GG gift cards I have left, AND the fact that it could potentially be a complete tax write off as it is under a $1K, effective price could be under $400???!! OMG!1 Ok, calm down…..must decide whether I need an Macbook or a plasma TV more…hmmm….

  • +3

main difference between this macbook 13 and macbook 2012:
    Macbook 2012 has

    • usb 3 (faster)
    • Video HD 4000 (New video)
    • RAM speed is 1600 (this one is 1333)
    • Ivy Bridge (new intel cpu and architech)
    • Maybe the new macsafe 2 (bigger head and faster charge)

    [I don't know anything else]

if u buy for education the new one is $1,229 or RRP is 1349

these are roughly. Tthese new features worth $350 or 229 for edu

    • huh? what do you mean "if you buy for education"?

      • student price

if you are a student you can purchase for $1229

      • Just visit JB Hi fi and mention that you were looking on-line for a student discount on apple products but you don't want to wait. They will straight away offer you to match it or give you 10% discount depends on the store.

I have tried it successfully a day after when the new macbook air's were out.

  • What are the docking options for this unit? The only 13" docks I can find on eBay are for 2009 models only. Weird.

    • search for thunderbolt dock. there some products in the market.

    Damn iTempted…

JB Hifi has good deals on Samsung ultrabooks 20% off.
These are less then a month old!

    Better deal IMO

  • -7

Bad deal, all you pay for is the stupid apple brand. So many other better spec'd machines out there for way less. Only way you'd pick this up was if your part of the brainwashed Job's cult.

    • +1

Funny how 'binary' is your thinking like your nick :P

You got a point (and I am not an Apple fan boy) but this is a pretty DAMN good deal

    • Thank you for telling us what to think O wise one.

    • You're also paying for a good build quality, great support and ease of use. And this is coming from a Windows PC rig user. But sure, keep raging against your made-up machine.

  • Not that good of a deal. Not sure what the fuss is about. It's an old model and I'd much rather get the latest one that was just released for $1,229.00 (education pricing).

    • -1

Huh? The latest Retina display model for $1,229? Where are you getting that from?

      • who said anything about retina? The macbook pro line was refreshed too you know.

      • I'm comparing the model of this deal to the latest equivalent model (obviously not the retina 15" model).

  • Is this deal for the 2011 model or 2012 model?

    • 2011-12 model, or in simpler terms, the old generation, or recently obsolete generation

  • Anyone looking to buy cases for the new macbook? :)

    • yes, would you have a nice deal for me my friend?

      • meet me around the corner

  • +1

Just checked my invoice online and saw this message:

Date of Order 14 Jun 2012
Order Status Your order is on backorder and will be shipped when available.

If you have the same message you are out of luck. Checked my order and had a quick call with them and they said they have 0 stock in their warehouse and are not sure when more will arrive or if they ever will.

The website should have been updated to reflect 0 stock but hasn't as of yet. This is what I was told.

    I just took a refund.

    • damn. was telling my sis about as she is of the "sheeple" and she would like this.

      • Put the order through any ways - they could get more stock in really soon. Could be the guy I was talking to didn't know what was going on. shrug I just took the refund as it was going to be the easiest for me.

        • you might get new macbook 2012 model LOL.

  • I saw this deal and was tempted.. went to the apple store and talked to some really annoying sales guy(he really didnt want to be there), I decided to go for the new apple pro 13 with the new processor + usb 3.
Its a good deal with dick smith but I can get a small discount from work which brings it down to $1230.
For those who got it well done..

    • Tell someone at Apple about it - he'll be sent to re-education pretty quickly.
They have award winning service and work very hard at it.
My mate bought 2 MBA 15 days ago. I rang up and said, I see you've upgraded the MBA - can he swap his over for the new one.
They said "YES"! Try getting that anywhere else.
