Don't neg the deal because of that.

And get a fraction of the performance + pay extra for power supply, case, storage and cooling

    • +8

You wouldn't, you'd get one Rpi 5 8gb for $135 and still need to get a powersupply, and storage..

Mr Cranky Pants over here is in the penalty box due to personal attack 😭

      Wonder what they said

      • It was moreso an attack than a personal attack, but defs didn't belong on ozb

Hope this is normal price for all N100 mini pc even on Amazon. Feel safer to buy from there instead.

  • Would this be a good one for emails, general web browsing and not much more for an older person? Was really hoping for a deal on amazon, how do these compare to the amazon prices? Are they worth the extra money?

    • This is all you need for those things.

    • +2

For that sort of usage the choice is either a new cheap Chinese miniPC, or a refurbished name brand thin client or similar. You choose which depending on the attributes you want. You get pretty much the same result because when that's all you need, pretty much anything will do it.

    • I think it’s fine for your use case. The other comment on the second hand dells from the eBay resellers is also a good idea to consider.

For the Amazon comparison, I think the ones on Amazon are also resold on Alie (gmktec). Leads me to believe they are probably pretty similar products, but you should do your research.

There appears to be some checks you should do on the aloe express mini pcs for peace of mind around your sensitive information being stolen too. I’ll do the checks myself and I probably won’t use it for banking etc .. but just something to keep in mind if you’re buying the pc.

    • amazon might come with an AU power supply, not sure what this one comes with. pictures show plug pack with EU and US snap on connectors.

      • +1

        That is a great callout,

I have asked the rep and they replied with: "As I see here this is a universal power plug".

We will see what rocks up :)

      • I didnt think of that, would it be something safe to use even? I know some can be pretty dangerous on aliexpress and ebay from china.

      • I got it in the last deal, exactly what you said so I am seeing whether they can provide the correct power supply as the prongs already stick out a mile without putting an international adapter on it eg it is not one of those interchangeable power supply type.

12V/3A power supply if you need to buy one ahead

I've been using an N100 mini PC for probably a year now as my mail nightly web browser, 1440p youtube watching, email and usenet/torrenting PC. Uses about 1/5 of the power of my desktop and is silent 99.9% of the time (fan may ramp up when it is doing quickpar2 file rebuilding). I paid $180 AUD for mine (Larkbox x 2023))/

  • Why do they bother with a fan at all on a 6W 800 MHz CPU? Surely if they designed it with the right shaped case so convection passively cooled it they could dispense with it altogether. Plenty of thin clients with CPUs that put out a lot more watts do.

    • How noisy the fan on this?

      • +1

mine is essentially silent 99.9% of the time. fan only kicks in when it is decoding / decompressing a large file.

    • +5

6W is the power consumption when it's sitting idle. When you're actually using the computer the power draw can spike up to 20-25W or more. Mini PCs that are passively cooled usually cost more, it's far cheaper just to put in a fan.

      • +1

6W is the power consumption when it's sitting idle. When you're actually using the computer the power draw can spike up to 20-25W or more.

        No. The N100 CPU's TDP is 6W.

        https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/231803/…

That doesn't mean its maximum power consumption is 6W, that is usually a bit more than the TDP. In this case probably 8-10W. What probably gets to 25W when the system is under load, is the whole system. Not just the CPU.

    • +3

Because a fan is cheaper than a passive heat sink case

    • +2

It doesn't run at 800mhz all the time. The cooling still needs to deal with the heat when it's going at 3.4GHz , not to mention flash storage runs pretty hot

  • +1

I thought that was a robot vacuum based on the thumbnail

  • Just bought this 6 days ago for $177 - how easy is it to organize a return on AliExpress? It was my first time shopping with them.

    • Something wrong with it already?

      • +4

They probably just want to refund > rebuy and pocket the $30 savings which is understandable but a bit of a hassle

    • +1

Once wrote to customer service about paying me $50 difference for my Anbernic Rg405V when I bought it for $230 and found it for $180 couple of days later, got refunded for the whole thing and I kept it lol

      • I will try that, thanks!

  • Anyone know how good these would be for running as a plex server?

    • +2

I've done some research & apparently really good. One thing to watch out for is if your Wifi uses WPA3 you will either need to downgrade the network to WPA2 or upgrade the wifi card inside this machine, otherwise it will not be compatible over wifi (but Ethernet will still work)

      • Thanks mate. Have just been reading through previous deals and the same issue was raised there as well. Was planning to use both ethernet and wifi. Pretty sure I'm using WPA3 so will look at adapters on AE.

        • I was the one who raised the issue in the previous thread.
See my post below on the Wifi situation.

      • Do you know which are recommend/compatible? seems like a million to choose from of all random no brand names…

is this one suitable? Wifi 6E M.2 AX210 5374Mbps Wifi Wireless Card Bluetooth 5.3 802.11ac/ax Tri Band AX210NGW With 10dbi Antennas For Win 10/11

        • This is the one I bought, it has not yet arrived so I cannot comment on if it is any good or compatible. https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006983416274.html?sourceT…

          • +2

            @AyTrain: Dont buy it.
TL;DR = Wifi cannot be changed/upgraded on this particular mini pc.

I bought a Wifi card on AliExpress as recommended (Intel AX210…) and tried upgrading the wifi in this pc. It won't work. There's no m.2 slot available

There's a spare M.2 slot for a 2280 sized NVME drive, but it's not keyed correctly and doesn't allow the wifi card to be plugged in.
The existing M.2 is for the included 512GB SSD drive, but it's occupied, also not keyed correctly, and doesn't have a screwhole for the shorter Wifi card anyway.
Aside from these two, there are no other slots to plug it in.

The default wifi chip is a little tiny one covered in a piece of transparent plastic and looks like it's soldered in.

@vicerum: You can get 2280 adapters on ebay that convert a spare m.2 m-key (SSD) socket to a a+e key socket so you can plug in a wifi card. The adapter has the post in the right place for a 2230 card on it.

Be warned though that there are two sorts of 2230 wifi cards. Some are full function. Others have some of their function performed in the motherboard's chipset. It started off with intel, but AMD has adopted the same annoying design to save money. If your motherboard has a proper M.2 a+e socket you can swap to a later wifi version just by swapping cards and you can use that m.2 a+e socket for other things. If they've designed it to use the cut down cards the socket will only have the e key and other cards won't work in it.

You can also get adapters that go the other way, they let you plug an m-key SSD into an a+e keyed socket for a wifi card, but they are only x1, so they only operate at 1/4 of NVMe speed. Which happens to be about SATA speed.

            • @vicerum: Thank you for the advice, unfortunately I had already purchased it. Wish me luck with the AliExpress returns process

        • See my post below.

    • These work great as a Plex server as the N100 features QuickSync technology, which enables hardware accelerated video decoding and encoding.

    • I'm using an intel n5095 system (really close to N100 specifications) and it runs Jellyfin streaming software (free compared to Plex costs) with hardware transcoding enabled and works fine. Can easily handle 4 or more 1080p concurrent streams.

  • +1

Does anyone know if all the hardware drivers for this are available for ubuntu?

  • Can this plus hdd replace synology ?
Mostly for arrs package, plex, transmissions, ebook server, photo server, openvpn server.
My synology is old and j series so no docker.

  • Awesome price I'll get a second

  • No USB Type C port?

  • Coming up at 151.16 for me. Am I missing something?

    • +1

      yes. currency values change constantly.

  • How do these perform? Wanting to upgrade my current slow PC. Is it good enough to run programs like Photoshop and video editing software? Not doing anything too intensive with these programs.

    • +1

You probably needed to spend 10-15X to get a beefy machine than this to meet your requirements.

    • Not a chance. The N series is good for low power home lab/Home Assistant and basic day-to-day web browsing use. It’ll struggle with serious workloads like photo and video editing, or modern gaming.

  • +1

If you're ordering get an AU adaptor at the same time. I believe this is compatible with the charger.

    • Are you saying this doesn’t come with an AU plug and you need to add one of these?

      • +1

Yes. Based on images only US and EU

        • +1

          Thanks, username checks out :-)

      • I bought one last deal, can confirm it only comes with EU plug by default, and a US adapter. Nothing for AUS.

    • Unfortunately the one on last deal came with a different power adaptor to what is shown where the face can't be changed (is on the side of the power box - reminds me of a phone charger design - instead of the interchange design).

Will need to buy a 12v/3A adaptor (as that is what comes in/says on the box)

  • What are people's use cases for these NUCs? Desktop computer? TV media box? Testing hardware?

    • +2

yes.. all three. Plus batocera emulation box - handles PS2 / Gamecube / Wii / WiiU upscaled to 1080p quite nicely. Soon I'm planning to buy another one and configure it with proxmox to run opnsense (firewall to remove all advertising for every device on my network) as well as home automation.

  • +4

I think the whole "Can it run Crysis" debate about these nucs is quite well summed up by this review on the Aliexpress page:

Buy shvidka delivery for two tizhni. Pakuvanya good. The car itself is streamed by the Chorn. In the robot without overplaying. For a short time, I can call the Lishe and the HDMI cable with similar postings at Firebat T8.

  • Can this be used to play 4K mkv file with Dolby Atmos passthrough output through HDMI?

    • yes.. it connects to HDMI1 in on my sound bar, since my TV cannot pass-through atmos (even though it has an E-ARC port connected to the soundbar.. bloody stupid limitation by LG).

  • +1

Anyone getting "This product can't be shipped to your address."?

    • +2

That always happens with aliexpress. I think the solution was changing country, possibly clearing cache. Then change back. Its a glitch.

      • cheers mate

  • Does anyone know if this will support dolby vision/atmos? I've been looking for something to replace my current kodi box, hoping this might do it.

    • there is no PC solution for dolby vision at the moment, since no one wants to pay the licencing fee. You'll only find a few android based media players which have paid the licencing for DV. Dolby atmos pass though is fine for audio though. I just play DV /atmos content on my n100 and it auto displays the HDR10 video stream and passes audio to my soundbar. EDIT: I'm using KODI media player on a usb stick, running Libreelec O/S.

  • Torn between this or the Beelink Alder Lake-N100 $259 on amazon, or BOSGAME N100 $247. I was hoping amazon would have better warranty but can't see warranty info on any of them. I bought amazon 10% credit planning to buy on amazon, but doesnt seem like it would be worth the extra money…..

  • Finished just as I decided. Are there any other good deals? Or are the ones on Amazon worth the extra.

    • I think the ones on amazon are a bit pricier (north of $200).

It is still available for $180 if you really want it.. but it's regularly on sale for a bit less if you check the bargain history here.

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006525654893.html?spm=a2…

      • Thankyou. I was planning on getting from Amazon, but this deal seems pretty good. I know amazon can be good, im only woried if something happened in the next 12 months or less. Decided to get your deal as I can't wait too long, its a present. Works out pretty good still with the coupon and the 12% cashback.

Just in case you were waiting.

          • @Trainer Red: Thanks! Thats really annoying though!

          • @Trainer Red: I wonder if its possible to get a reducton of the difference from aliexpress, or possibly return it? and order this? works out about $30 cheaper even without cashrewards or anything.

          • @Trainer Red: It was tempting to try and cancel, and rebuy, but deemed it not worth the risk. Lots of horror stories with aliexpress, and I do not see "free returns" available for this item. maybe will be able to return if faulty but not change of mind.

          • @Trainer Red: Oops, didnt realise the one I bought that you suggested was actually a different one, seems looks like it has more usb, and a displayport, not sure of other differences, but feel a bit less bad about the price difference, it might be worth it.

      • thats a celeron……

        • Its not, it says it is. its n100.

      Great find well done

    • How'd you get that price? Its showing as 153 now. A bit less in USD. I wonder if its just the aliexpress exchange rate changing quickly.

  • Could you play fortnite on this?

  • mine arrived yesterday

    • When did you order?

    • how is the device going so far?

      any issues
any pros or cons you noticed?

      • I got the other version Plus, not plus2, seems to be much the same. Its really good for the price/size and used a main computer with qhd monitor for family member.

  • +1

Is anyone else having problems with aliexpress? I have tried everything, under vpn, different devices, but it keeps showing up as not available to your address even if I logout, or change the address to a different country.

    • Same. Just for this item sadly.

      • They told me it's out of stock not the item is available and keeps reducing every so often 9 left. It's not a country thing, at first I thought they blocked my IP.

        • Do you want mine? I’ve had it delivered. I think with the wtr pro on sale I might grab that instead.

          • +1

@flashi007: Which WTR Pro deal are you looking at?

            • @ruddj: cash back on shopback and using the 70 off voucher on ali express
