  • will be excellent if this one is 7060

    Isn’t the cpu very old?

    • Q3 2015, so 7 years now.

      • +3

come with win11, which I don't think is offically supported on 6th gen, Win 11 support starts on 8th gen Intel CPU ?

        • +1

I think the win11 lack of support is largely due to TPM that's needed. Systems in the last 5 years have a TPM v2 embedded in the CPU, so they can run it without additional hardware.

According to this article, these systems may be able to have the TPM updated somehow, thus giving them support for win11. Or they are just bypassing the whole thing altogether

        • Can still run

    • +20

      Isn’t the cpu very old?

Yes it's a used computer for just $160.

      • -2

These are most probably company used pcs which were on continuously for at least 3-5 years. I don’t know how long they will last

        • +2

          Yes that's why they're only $160 🤷🏼‍♂️

If you want to pay more for a newer machine with less hours use, then go right ahead !

        • I've never seen a desktop PC just kick the bucket without reason to like being dropped or run in a sauna. Laptops are different since they get moved around every day and can't fit cooling systems that will actually keep them alive for a good amount of time.

The only things I'd be worried about in these are the fans and those are replaceable for cheap.

          • @Void: The power supplies also don't last forever on the larger corporate machines - that's probably the second most likely thing to fail after the fans…

Not sure about the laptop-style units that these use though…

            • +2

@Nom: These use external laptop power bricks which you can replace for like $15

              • +1

@Teebytok: This is the big advantage of these things, yes.

        • I'm not interested in the PC myself, have plenty already.
Your comment isn't valid tho. Chances are this will have less faults over a new PC to be honest.

PC parts last for decades, with the exception of hard disks and even SSD that are a long term consumable.
Even then they could last forever with home and office usage patterns, it's just a higher probability of failure with storage devices so ymmw new or old…

    • Yeah, 7/8/9 Gen is what you ideally want.

An i3 7/8/9 Gen is probably going to perform better for things like vitalisation and Quick Sync.

    • +6

It doesn’t really matter depending on what you want to do with it.

It’s better value than a Raspberry Pi 4 in my opinion.

  • +5

    Don't think Windows 11 officially supports i5-6500t.

    • Easily downgraded to 10. This is a decent deal if you don't need the latest and greatest.

    • While true it works perfect on them!

      • And if we don't need a windows license?

        • +2

Then don't use the Windows licence.

          • @Nom: Or just upgrade to Linux

          • @Nom: I'd prefer to not pay for it, but I guess these things tend to come with a license key anyway.

    • -1

Doesn't matter runs fine. Even has win11 iGPU drivers.

      • Anything pre gen-11 is now legacy drivers, but they're pretty bulletproof these days anyway

  • +1

Anyone know if these run hot/loud? looking for a small server for the cupboard.

    • +3

      35 W
      https://www.intel.com.au/content/www/au/en/products/sku/8818…

should be quiet and cool-ish as long as the cupboard is vented and not fully sealed
You could chuck a 30/40W light bulb and thermometer in there to see how hot it actually gets

      • He Might have awesome insurance

        • Lol

        • +2

Insurance is one thing you don’t want to get your moneys worth from.

      • +3

35W in a cupboard is fine, and it actually uses a lot less unless you are running it flat out. This is not a bitcoin rig.
Just don't put it in the linen cupboard under the linen.

Worst that will happen with old gear is a fan fails, triggering a thermal shutdown.

      • this is not the simpons

      • -2

Posting random shit on the internet… does no one use their brain anymore?

    • Mount it behind tv on wall

    • +2

I have one behind my TV. You'd be hard pressed to identify it's on. The heatsink/cooler is quite a good design, and the chip is a T version so 35W max TDP. Just ensure there's some fresh air getting into the cupboard and it'll be fine.

      • How do you plug it into tv without hdmi out on the computer? A converter? Do you get 4k/60fps?

  • Currently have an optiplex 9010 (i7 3770) mainly used to run blue iris (CCTV) and the unifi controller software.

    1) would it be worth "upgrading" to this to take advantage of Intel quicksync and being able to use H. 265?
    2) is there room in the case to put an additional hdd?

    • +1

Are you happy with your current display? The GPU on this is the main upgrade.

It has an m2 socket, and 2.5" SATA. It would be nice if the rep could specify which one is in use by the SSD.

      • ^ Would also like to know if it comes with SATA or m.2 SSD

        • You can upgrade from 128GB SSD to 1TB SSD for only $100. I think it's a safe bet it's SATA not m.2

        • +2

In case anyone stumbles across this comment in the future and wants to know, mine came with an SATA m.2 SSD

    • interested in this as well

    • +1

I would say yes for the native transcoding on the GPU (Gen 6 and beyond)

  • It can hold a NVME and a 2.5" hard drive

  • I bought same model from same vendor one month ago. After reset Windows, confirmed OS upgraded to Win 11 Pro for free. Very happy with the performance.

    • ways around getting Windows 11, but its not supported, the CPU is too old, the CPU is a 6th GEN , 8th Gen is the starting CPU that is supported

      https://www.techepages.com/intel-i5-6500-is-not-compatible-w…

      • Don't know why PC can upgrade to 11 with old CPU. Assuming some Win licences are in exception list.

        • +1

There's a simple reg key that disables the CPU check and another that disables the TPM check.
Set those keys to enable Win 11 to install on almost anything.

          • @Nom: Maybe. I just reset windows but not upgrade. Window did it automatically by itself.

  • This or a Dell i7-3770 3.4Hz?

    • -1

I wouldn't buy any third gen computer at this point, not for performance reasons but everything else is getting so old. You know what'll fail after ten years? The physical on/off switch - and there goes your PC.

For a this price you're not going to find much better, and these things are small and quiet.

      • Just looking for something for my folks. All they do is check emails, solitare and weather

        • I use one of these for my folks under their tv. They check email on their tv.

These are great for the size and form factor. Agree with other poster that get as later model as possible for the small marginal money. But these are well and truly office tested performers.

        • -1

Don't buy a machine that old - fan bearings on the way out, PSU on the way out - there's no way to know how much life is left in it.
I would look for the newest machine you can - this deal will be just fine 👍

  • Hi fusetech, do you have any Dell USFF 7000 with the built in wifi/Bluetooth card or is that only on the i7 models?

  • Great deal for the price tbh

  • Hi mate, any thinkpad deals?

    • Hi FuseTechAU, Any deals on HP Elitebook 830 G5 or HP Elitebook 840 G6 8th gen or above?

  • Room for a second NIC? (for openwrt router)

    • Yes, plenty of usb ports.

      • There are some articles around people using I NIC and esxi to virtualise the ethernet - seems to work well

  • -4

Random question - have a few 256gb iPhones that I want to physically back up. Does anyone know if apple compresses backups for iTunes or do I need equivalent storage on my computer?

  • How will this fair as a plex server?

    • +2

It's acceptable. But not good. For Plex you ideally want 7/8/9 Gen. The QSV encoder looks like ass.

It'll do it, just not look good while doing it.

    • If you don't need to transcode this is more than enough.

  • -1

If this were an 8/9 Gen CPU it'd be 10/10. As it stands, a 6th Gen (2015) i5 isn't going to cut it.

    • +1

      2015 i5 is absolutely fine for $160.

If you want a modern system you'll need to pay more.

  • Does the 7040 come with vPro? I see it mentioned in the general blurb but would like confirmation if these units have it.

  • +1

I placed the order on 21 Aug 2022 and the computer finally reach me on 6 Sep. However the power supply of the monitor is missing, asked for help via email and commented on webpage many many times, every response need to wait for at least 3 days, no phone number available to contact

Just praying that I can use my computer before the end of Sep🤦🏻‍♂️

  • -1

Is there room to install a graphics card in this, I need to put in a 1050 ti or 1060 if possible. Wanting to set it up for Zwift.

    • +2

No this is a micro machine.

      • Thanks mate, yes too small a case, I should have realised.

  • At $160 no one is going to get an 8th or 9th gen rig or fit in a big power supply or discrete graphics card. If ozbargainers want cheap then cheap e-waste is what they get. Pay a fair price and you'll get something more decent.

    • +1

Is that meant to be slander PricePerformance PC?

      • I am coordinating with Allessandra from your office to get something custom organised, thanks OP

    • I doubt your interested, but for Zwift supposedly a 4th gen + i3 is no real differance to anything until a 12th gen i3. But GPU is important to a limit.

Just getting a machine for a single cause, it gets stuck behind a bike, electronic trainer and a whole of fans.

      https://zwiftinsider.com/zwift-pc-guide/

  • Can anyone recommend the cheapest thing to run teslamate locally? I would have loved a raspberry pi but they are out of stock everywhere and I don't want to buy from scalpers…

    • If it runs fine on a Raspberry Pi then it'll run on absolutely anything - any PC hardware you can find is way more powerful 👍

      • Yeah you are right, however I just want a server that consumes the least amount of electricity and can fit on my desk (consuming space similar to a pi or mini optiplex). Hhmm i guess I need to keep looking…

        • This machine is about as small and low power as possible. Under no load, it's barely going to consume much more than a Pi.

        • NanoPi make some absolutely tiny ARM systems that might work.

I personally stay away as I need more software than ARM supports but if all you want to run is TeslaMate than one of those things will probably work as long as it runs on ARM.

  • I bought a Dell OptiPlex 7040 with a 256 Gb SSD for $237.30 four months ago.

It came with a mini WiFi dongle, as WiFi was not built in.

It runs well and is very quiet with a quick start up. It replaced my Pentium PC.

  • Do any of these Optiplex support 2 internal drives? i.e. for use as a NAS?

    • +1

No but you can just put your drives into a USB chassis like https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/storage-drives/drive-boxes-en… for NAS use.

Or just use external USB drives - they're cheaper then internals anyway…

      • Or even move the board and PSU to different case!

        • +1

Beware none standard motherboard though - you need to do a bit of creative mounting 😎

  • Is this deivce good to be used as a NAS?

    • Yep, see my post directly above yours for more details - you'll need a USB enclosure to house your drives, or use external drives.

  • Can you install a secondary drive on these machines?

    • +1

I have a ssd and m.2 in mine

  • @FuseTechAu is the 8gb version single or dual sticks?

  • +1

I already have a lot of spare NVMe and SATA SSDs, can we order one sans a drive?

  • Can this thing run CS:go?

  • looks good deal, has anyone installed wifi card on 2nd m.2 slot ? does this come with antennas ?
how can we select $10 domestic shipping, at checkout it shows as $39 with fastway even for melbourne :/

    more info : https://www.hardware-corner.net/desktop-models/Dell-OptiPlex…

  • Posting here because @FuseTechAu have not responded to multiple attempts to contact them. I bought this and it was delivered on Monday without the antenna for the built in WiFi which is no big deal because I was going to plug it in via Ethernet, but with the wrong power supply. I've emailed them twice, I've messaged them via their FB page, and messaged them here, and radio silence.

Do these guys have a good reputation normally?

Right now I have a $200 paperweight that I need because the PC that was running automation has died, but I'm going to have to do a chargeback because I can't get them to respond to me to fix the problem and that's really annoying.
