had the same thought…cant get any good sausage rolls anymore in the supermarkets, really.
They are bland compared to fresh homemade.
these ones were great but colesworth ditched them…and put in more crap stuff like mrs macs and their homebrands instead
@franco cozzo: Company went bankrupt
Garlos from Coles are okay.
never seen em at our coles before. what state and why are they so expensive? $4.50 for a supermarket sausage roll seems a lot
@franco cozzo: NSW. They are better than most of the ones I've found, otherwise Pieface Service stations. Pieface Pies are $7.50 now at our local servos, so $4.50 is reasonable.
Otherwise, Villis or Thompsons Pies.@BewareOfThe Dog: yeh thought they might be a different state…they look alright and not as mass manufactured as the usual suspects
@franco cozzo: Garlo was an ex well known Rugby League player in NSW, and started up a chain of bakeries (his family background was as bakeries?) promoting better made Pies/sausage Rolls @ 2001-2002 They did well initially for a decade, and received heaps of exposure on the 2SM AM network, CH9 Footy show, and I think were sold at certain sporting grounds. Sean Garlick, then had the idea of expanding, the bakery idea, and started off selling through Coles. Generally, they are frozen, then defrosted to be oven 'reheated' in store, otherwise they remain in the frozen section (to prevent markdowns).
Any chilli jam brand youd recommend?
My wife makes it. I eat it. That's all I know.
Mr Chili Jam aka Jamie Oliver, alive and well I see
Jamie Olive oil
Seems cheap.. not sure about quality
Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it was the sausage-maker who disposed of the body.

For better sausage rolls, buy minced meat (preferably pork, or a mix) and make your own sausage meat. Doesn't cost much.
But I draw the line at making my own puff pastry :)Does anyone know of a handy ready made sausage spice mix?
Such as when I’m making lasagne, I’ll spice up the beef with several things… but someone’s got to have a ready to go one.Try Gewurzhaus, they’ve got amazing spice mixes and do delivery if you’re not near one of their shops.
@[Deactivated]: $180/kg yikes. They include the ingredients, shouldn't be hard to make your own
@sourdawg: Kinda thinking that.. 🙃
I dunno, sounds like recycling. Using every part of the animal so none of it goes to waste. Would you rather that goes to waste?
Gluten free sausage? Well I'll be damned. I had no idea this existed.
A lot of sausage meat has breadcrumbs as filler
Did not know that. First for me. Does it affect taste or is it just to meet dietary needs of people with CD?
The fillers are included in sausages to make a cheaper product. Traditionally breadcrumbs were used as a filler. Any time I've checked the labeling on sausages in the last decade it's been rice flour and/or potato starch.
@trongy: Makes sense. I've grown up eating latino style sausages, just full of delicious artery clogging goodness, lol. Maybe time to make a switch.
@trongy: they normally add the bread ( after soaking in water for homemade) or breadcrumbs as I think it helps to keep it together (gluten) and also soaks up the fat from the meat. I make my own and pretty sure if you didn't have the bread in there, the fat would be going everywhere.
@souths123: Yeh I’ve found adding bread (I usually blitz up some crusts off the loaf) helps with soaking up fat that would others leak out or make it soggy.
My mum used to soak in milk first, but I just at it straight to the mix.
Usually tastes better as they arent filling the 'sausage' meat with breadcrumbs. I guess it has the added benefit for gluten intolerant people.
@Shak2093: I'll have to at least try one sometime.
Or Sawdust.
Uses Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Maize Flour, Maize Starch instead of wheat based bread etc as part of seasoning in some sausages.
Those same ingredients are also found in Woolies beef sausages.
Most sausages do not use wheat flour, but check the ingredients if small amounts matter to you.
scary
Halal
Ingredients:
Australian Beef (73%), Water, Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Maize Flour, Salt, Mineral Salt (451), Maize Starch, Spices, Onion Powder, Preservative (223), Sugar, Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid), Yeast Extract, Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein (Maize), Citrus Fibre, Natural Flavour, Spice Extracts, Rosemary Extract, Humectant (422)Similar ingredients to Woolies beef sausages.
*Ingredients differ by State.Ordered. You had me at Humectant.
Last time I had it.. needed more Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein.
Humectant (Glycerol 422) is classified as a sugar alcohol. It helps to keep food moist and extends shelf life.
Enjoy!moist
@muncan: Exactly as described…
Glycerol 422: Due to its hygroscopic properties, it helps to keep food moist and even extends shelf life of a product.Moist is an important term in food preparation & storage.
I've used Glycerol in baking & especially icing cakes for that property.Moist is better for most uses than dry old sausage meat!
Wow 73 percent. The frozen chicken tenders aren't even 50 percent chicken
Nor are they 50% tender…
make your own sausage rolls with pork and fennel sausage meat, served with some plum jam with lemon juice added…yummm
This stuff is good. Mix with 500g of minced pork as well so it's not so salty when you make sausage rolls. Too bad unavailable at my local
Recipe tin eats has a sausage roll recipe that is exceptional
Lots of uses for this - other than the 1 suggestion so far - sausage rolls.
It's cheaper beef mince with seasoning used in (Woolies Beef) sausages. Health Star Rating: 2
Traditionally was used to produce hamburger patties, meatballs, rissoles, dumplings, in pasta, etc.
Lots of recipe ideas online.
20 sausage meat recipes from BBC Good FoodStill coming up as $6 for me (WA).
Same with me in NE Melbourne stores that have it
Ouch…. Didn’t realize it was only specific states…..
Only in certain stores supplied by a particular DC. Short sated stock allocated to stores a few days ago. BBD 06/09
Never heard of this stuff before, thought it was dog food lol.
Could be. Might buy to feed to my meat eating birds. Cheaper than their current mince.
Pet mince has other additives supposedly good for dogs etc. The birds won't touch it.Out of curiosity, what kind of birds do you have?
Wild little Grey Butcher Birds. They come in the house & fly around inside.
Just a little supplemental feeding. They're establishing nests in the garden at the moment.@INFIDEL: This has salt, sugar and flavour enhancer in it - please don’t feed it to your butcher birds.
@morse: Oops. I was the one who posted the ingredients above… Cancel that idea.
Was only thinking about cost savings. Would have rejected the idea at time of purchase.
They eat less than 1kg over a month, so only minimal savings. Likely they would reject it anyway - with the spices etc. That's why I have only been feeding them a small amount of raw meat.
Don't think I would eat this myself, so saved me $2.50😉@INFIDEL: We have a butcher bird that hangs around too - it’s super cute. I don’t feed it but it steals bits. Apparently it’s important that they eat the whole animal to get the bones, skin, fur/feathers etc for nutrients. Sometimes I’m tempted to buy insect mix specially to feed it but I kind of hope that it will forage as nature intended.
I’m also unlikely to buy the sausage meat for human consumption. Which is probably unfair since I eat other stuff which is likely just as bad.
@morse: Grey Butcherbirds are so cute. Have interesting individual characteristics, which I know them by.
The larger Pied butcherbird can be a vicious killer! Killed one of the Greys in my garden.
As my mainly native garden is overgrown, it attracts birds like the Pheasant Coucal - a larger bird for a small garden.Feeding wildlife is not recommended. It makes them dependent & increases numbers. And especially not bread!
Am only providing a little supplemental feeding of raw meat to the butcher birds. They get plenty of insects etc in my bird friendly garden, often bringing them in. They survive quite well when I'm away for weeks, but hang around when I return. So it's mainly for my benefit.
Started to feed them when looking after my sick Father. They would sit on him, in the garden. Gave him great joy.
I’m also unlikely to buy the sausage meat for human consumption.
Am changing my diet with help of my Dr. Don't remember cheap sausage meat being on the list😉
@morse: Where's the flavour enhancer?
@Flying Ace: yeah, my bad, I just assumed. Regardless I can't imagine the salt and preservative are good for birds. My understanding is that carnivorous birds shouldn't be fed meat in general as they need to the nutrition of the bones, feathers, fur etc and if humans feed them steak and sausages they miss out and get malnutrition.
@morse: Funny how junk like this is ok for humans though, probably still better than Maccas ha
@G-rig: So true! I’d also eat bacon even though I know it’s not good for me but wouldn’t feed it too a butcher bird. Apparently the main issue for humans with processed meat is salt and the mixture of sulphites and meat together (223 in this case). Apparently sulphites are okay in dried fruit but not when mixed with meat. Pretty much all processed meat has it aside from a few expensive specialty products. So eating this would be similar to any other sausage, ham, bacon type product. The main variable being the amount of saturated fat.
@morse: Agree, Processed meat should be avoided as a type 2A carcinogen.

Would you even give that shit to ya dog?
Looks pretty nasty.
Think about why this is so cheap. They are still making profit on this.
It's the scraps after the scraps have been sold with a bunch of sodium, filters and preservatives thrown in. Please don't eat this.Hehe, read the label 73% random beef bits, 27% saw dust like substances! So yeah, eat at own risk :P
Ah yes, second most common ingredient "Water" is basically just saw dust. Good point.
🎶"Daddy would you like some sausage" 🎶
Just in time for fathers day
I like using these to make sausage rolls. Super easy
dog food
What does dog taste like?😄
Darn, and I just bought a couple last week from my local woolies after being marked down to clear for $4.50. Terrible timing!
This definitely isn't high quality but at only $5/kg great price and leads itself to sausage rolls, meatballs and rissoles nicely. Also makes a great taco filler with rice and beans (cheap meal).
Dice it up… Great in fried rice.
It's a bit soft to dice
Bought a few of these last week when they were 70c at my local Woolworths. The ingredients didn't seem too bad.
Made my own sausage rolls at home - added some finely diced carrot, onion and mixed herbs, wrapped in puff pastry and they came out excellent. Would recommend.
try grating a green apple into the mix next time, it seems weird at first but my mum made it this way for years (though without the carrot) and it really works well.
Fry's vegan saus rolls from RSA. Zero chance of gristle!
in a sealed/covered/unseen contents pack like that it looks suitable for your gluten-free pet animals
Similar to polony?

Sausage fest
Should just get them all down and be done with that crap
Homemade sausage rolls in the airfryer. A bit of chilli jam on top. Yummmm. Thanks Kathie (whoever you are).
