Start getting new trades/professions…. for the upcoming great depression

    Age discrimination at its finest.

I’m 25 and would love to do these.

Sometimes I ask myself what trades and skills are needed right now, and whether there are any incentives from the government to upskill to these wanted roles, but I get slightly overwhelmed of what’s out there and don’t know where to start. My executive dysfunction doesn’t help, either.

Honestly would love to talk to someone who may be able to give information of possible pathways, especially for crucial, essential skills and trades currently at a shortage.

Tafes hold open/career days and expos exactly for this purpose. Aside from these events you can contact your local tafe directly for advice

      • Emergency services accept recruits of all ages

Personally I'd go with Electrician. Heck, I'm 35 and have considered a career change down this path. Electrification is key to meeting net zero, so there's lots of opportunities converting houses from gas + solar battery install + EV charging installations + various large scale energy projects. I reckon you'd being a good place for the future work as an electrician.

        • +1

And at the very least you can do your own electrical work and save $$$ :D

          • +1

@WhyAmICommenting: Exactly. True for most trades, but I think plumbing and building are a little more forgiving for DIY.

I would love to just be able to add a powerpoint when I need it, or change a light fitting without having to pay a fortune. The US is a little more flexible for DIY electrical work than here.

            • @NigelTufnel:

or change a light fitting without having to pay a fortune.

              Welcome to the nanny state…

The US is a little more flexible for DIY electrical work than here.

See the pattern there? Less regulation means lower costs…

              • @1st-Amendment: Well yes, there's an ideal equilibrium level of regulation in every industry, and I think we've gone too far in some. But judging by your username I don't think we'd agree where that equilibrium is in every area…

                • @NigelTufnel:

That's the beauty of free speech, you are fully entitled to express a different opinion.

                  Imagine not wanting that…

@1st-Amendment: Heh. I got my 1st and 2nd amendments mixed up. My bad. Lucky I don't live in the US or I might be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment for my mistake. Oh wait, I think there's another amendment on that too! :-)

While I didn't get a trade, I strongly recommend it for young people. A school mate did an electrical apprenticeship and at the same time became a dive master. Spent most of his 20s travelling the world, working at resorts & dropping into electrical work when needed. Now he's white collar but really made the most of his youth with those two qualifications.

  • interesting they are really trying to get more people doing trades instead of degrees.

    • +6

As someone who works in the industry, there is a serious lack of trade apprentices coming through. The trade shortages will get worse in the future.

Not really. The States run TAFE. The Feds run Unis.

      • Not really. The States run TAFE. The Feds run Unis.

Actually, most Uni's are private businesses subsidised by the taxpayer through federal government schemes. Imagine if the government gave out taxpayer backed lower than market rate loans to anyone who wanted to buy an iPhone or a Hyundai i30?

What about people over 25? Not everyone over 25 have a million dollars in their bank account.

  • +13

Any free course for over 25??

  • +2

meanwhile SA, NSW, NT, TAS, WA all lagging behind in funding
like common its one federation dude.

  • +22

Once you age over 25 you no longer can learn new skill

    • +3

I gave you a + but it seems lot of people can’t read sarcasm. 😀

It's true though… my bro turned 25 last year. Now he just barks at the mailman :_(

  • +1

    This i can get around

    • +2

Finally my tax dollars going somewhere useful

  • Now for Vic to follow through

but you still need a job to complete your apprenticeship…. so where are they coming from?

    • Well in Brisbane there's going to have be lots of infrastructure built for the Olympics regardless of inflation. Plus there are companies screaming out for workers at the moment.

  • +1

That's pretty good. Would love to do a welding course, but I don't live in QLD and not under 25. Good push to help people go out and do something, though. If you don't fit in the age bracket, is the cost of TAFE really what's stopping you? If not, then go for it. If it is, that is unfortunate. Not being able to afford or have access to education is one of the biggest issues in the world today.

What are the options for people that are over 25 and a d a d are k on getting educated in a course like the ones above and cant apply beaus you are not 25 or under?:)

Genuinely asking because I'm super keen but I only have retail experience and want to expand to another industry

    • IT helpdesk might be a good transition job with your customer service skills - if you are interested in IT.

If you are academic you could study something at uni / learn in your free time but I never learnt anything worthwhile that way - I can’t stick with it. I need external motivation.

      • " learn in your free time but I never learnt anything worthwhile that way - I can’t stick with it. I need external motivation."

An honest statement that has trapped many, but it doesn't have to be that way.

I never wanted to be 25 again until today.

BS this should be age restricted.

Under 25s are typically busy doing university, they dont want to do Tafe unless they're international students looking to maintain a study visa

  • Pretty crap it’s only under 25. It was the same for the “covid” subsidised courses but they very quietly opened them to all ages. When I applied even the enroller said I couldn’t and I had to get them to call the gov agent to tell them I could join. Doing a $100 diploma now.

So keep an eye on it hopefully more chances for us oldies.

"Free" is not the right word.
    It is taxpayer funded.
Nothing is free … unless you are a politician.
