  • Can anyone see where it mentions who is a new card holder, I assume it's the usual amex 18 months

    • +1

Yeah it's there, on the left under the compare cards button

  • Unsure when I cancelled my last amex card.
    Anyway we can find out?

    • check with credit report agency, they should be able to give you a roughly idea.

    • I have an email with subject "Your American Express Credit Card Account has been cancelled"

  • What's acceptance like for Amex these days? I cancelled my amex 3-4 years ago when they went from free return flights to just travel credits as the perk for the card. Is acceptance good enough now to go for a fee free card as your second card for everywhere that doesn't accept it, or do you guys keep a points earning Visa/MC as well?

I've got a fairly good deal at 2 qantas points per dollar spent on my ANZ card visa card at the moment. But once that expires I'd probably go back to a fee free CBA card for all other spend just to minimise the number of netbank apps I have to deal with.

    • Pretty good. Still the odd place that won’t take it but that’s what your backup Visa or Mastercard is for

  • What's does gold status give you?

    • Lounge access without having to fly Business Class for one.

  • How many Ozbargainers are still eligible for Amex cards with their 18 month waiting period? I wish they separated their Qantas and Velocity cards.

  • Merged from American Express Velocity Platinum Card: 120,000 Velocity Points ($3,500 Spend in 3 Months), Annual Domestic Flight, $375 Fee

I believe this is the highest earn rate amongst Velocity cards 1.25 Velocity Points per $1 except spend at government bodies in Australia

Also eligible for 40,000 bonus Velocity Points, Trial Gold Status for 6 months or $300 Virgin Australia Travel Bank Credit not sure if this can be stacked with the Ozbargain referral link

    Comes with

    • 1x Return domestic flight
    • 2x Virgin Australia Lounge passes
    • 2x American Express Lounge at Sydney International Airport or Melbourne International Airport
    • Travel insurance
    • can you have this as well as explorer card?

      • "New Amex Card Members only." I guess you can … if you don't want the bonus points.

        • Essentials card also has a 1.25 points/$ spent earn rate.

          • @bargainbuyer11: Its amex rewards points. And the ratio from amex reward point to velocity is 2:1. So with this card, you get 1.25 amex points per $1 spend, which mean 0.625 velocity points.

    • I applied for an Amex a week ago and haven't heard a thing

      • +1

Same, and I jumped on the live chat and was told that my application was declined! By Amex! Bit bloody rude!

Now 3 declines out of 50. Didn't expect Amex to be one of those.

        • That's pretty disappointing.

I just called them and she could only find my old account. She then transferred me to someone after 20 minutes and they said I was declined.

I told Amex right before I left them last time that their systems were a complete mess after some shop small issues so maybe they made a note of that and have taken it out on me vs fixed the issues.

Very disappointing to not hear anything and the operator to be so clueless though.

          • @arcticmonkey: so no approval either then?
i applied earlier this week also nothing back… was expecting a fast approval based on my history with them :(

            • @shonofear: Nope. They wouldn't explain why either. I asked to escalate to a manager and they said one will call me.

I might escalate to AFCA as I have copped the credit hit anyways.

              • +1

@arcticmonkey: Far out, also declined !!! sucks.
                BS i say

              • @arcticmonkey: AFCA? lol.

You do realise that Amex can decline for whatever reason they see fit. You aren't automatically entitled to a credit card.

I called up and got the usual spiel. Told to wait for the letter in the mail which might explain the rejected application further.

But, sh*t happens hey. I won't lose sleep over it.

Possibly they saw that I always have my amex cards only open for 2-3 months max, and apply again 18 months and 3 days after each close, and thought, stuff you ya cheeky bugger?

                • @endolphin: What's to lose going to AFCA? Takes minutes and it helps to ensure the application is reviewed properly. I have had my only other declined application overturned by following this process.

Funnily enough, in that example, the Australian complaints team seemed as frustrated as I was with the offshored support through India. He said there were numerous delays and complaints with the offshored applications team and he was struggling to communicate effectively with them too.

    • The return domestic flight is only for the east coast if you select say Melbourne, it can take you as far as Adelaide and as north as Sunshine coast.

Does anyone the T&Cs regarding eligibility if you have held an Amex previously? I can't seem to find this info.

  • Hi, can I still use the referral link to get the extra bonus signup points as well?

    • Yes I think so. Here is the picture from AmEx referral page.

      Imgur

      • ok thanks, i used the random link, hopefully im fully approved soon and someone gets bonus 40k

  • Anyone had any luck getting pro rata annual fee refund if you didn't use the flight?

  • Ugh just realised it's only east coast flight. What can I do with the flight? waste it or sell?
