  • This is the better deal for sure.

  • Yeah the other deal with 17" is just too massive to carry around …

    • +3

I have gone multiple times back and forth between 15.6 and 17.3 gaming laptops in the past 24 months

when I get 15.6 I miss the extra screen real estate space

      when I get 17.3 I miss portability

even tried 16 inch which was great, but the system was faulty and I returned it (omen 16)

but all in all I decided that screen real estate is worth the trade-off, and I stuck to 17.3

other people may have other priorities of course

I have the previous generation of this laptop.
The thermals are horrible (I hope just a repaste will fix it), the BIOS is locked down to prevent undervolting, and the battery life is hot garbage.
    But the price is great.

    • +1

If youre comfortable with modding bios, theres a tutorial online to unlock undervolting. Here. Seems to work for most laptops.

Was about to try it myself but was lucky enough i found that someone already did it for my alienware m15r6 and uploaded the modded bios.

      • This tutorial seems more helpful than previous ones I had seen. I'll give it a shot, thank you Khaez.

    • You can undervolt with software, try the intel XTU utility
      https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/17881/intel…

I used an older version on my Xeon based lenovo laptop and it worked fine. You can undervolt and play around with the multipliers (within the range of base and boost clock)

Create a Windows system restore point before you start, so it's easy to restore your settings if you go too far.

I had no trouble to use Throttlestop on my two Metabox laptops (8gen, 10gen)
The issue is Gigabyte locking down the BIOS.

  • +1

I have this laptop with the 3080 and the thermals are pretty impressive. Gigabyte's control center is a massive piece of shit tho. Way too many times have my keyboard LED lights been randomly set to the rainbow wave effect when I have the backlight set to off. Other than that it's a great laptop!

    • +1

Hey thought I'd let you know I just got this laptop and found this great open source alternative to Control Center https://github.com/Ghioaga/AeroMinimal.

It avoids all the bugs of the official software, while still letting you use the official RGB configurator UI, and still controlling stuff like fan curves. You have to uninstall Control Center first, of course.

  • Seems like a better deal than the 17-inch model. I wonder whether I should I get this or wait for Zephyrus G14 with the newest AMD chip

  • +2

This laptop has the camera positioned at the bottom of the screen rather than above it as usual. This would give an awkward appearance on video call I think.

    • yes, both 15p and 17g have this webcam looking upwards

so if you plan to use webcam a lot, that's something to consider

me I have a separate laptop for work, so I used webcam on my AORUS like.. never

  • So tempting… so even though it doesn't have a MUX Switch, you can still bypass if connecting to an external monitor yeah? (Is that a given, or is it possible that even on an external GPU, it could still be wired through to the iGPU?)

    • +1

Not a given - it's not common but on some laptop models the port connecting to the external monitor is wired through the iGPU. Not sure if this laptop does that.

But otherwise, yes if the port is wired through the dGPU then you bypass the iGPU and get the same performance boost as a mux switch.

You only see the performance increase at high refresh rates though, so if your dGPU already struggles to push past 60fps then have a mux switch/connecting to an external monitor won't improve this.

the difference between this and 17g I posted is also keyboard isn't mechanical here

and I can't remember if body is machined aluminium here, I remember when choosing between 15 and 17 Aorus, 15s turned me off by plastic build. I could have gotten 15 with 3080 for the same price as I got 17g, but I voted it out for plastic build

important for me since I specifically wanted a sturdy build

other people may have other priorities sure :)

  • Thanks scotty

  • Is Aorus quality better or worst than Alienware?

    • vs Alienware X series? Nah far from it

vs Alienware M series? About the same, Alienware will look flashier but none of them are decidedly better than the other. Alienware will have mux switch but thats about it.

    • looks like slightly different config? centercom and PC Byte are 240Hz screens, while main post is 300hz screen

still good find. looks like Gigabyte is discounted across AU

      • +1

Looks like Scorptec is the only one quoting a 300hz screen. Perhaps Scorptec got its listing wrong?

  • How (un) suitable are these as a high school laptop for a junior HS student? Are they super fragile/unweildy?

    • +3

      extremely unsuitable:

      • awkward webcam placement

      • short battery life, will not last a whole school day

      • its a gaming laptop, its heavy and chunky and unlike legion/zephyrus/blade it can not take type c charging so you will need to bring the heavy charging brick along with you

      • @Brrrrt thanks for that. All valid points, non-PD type C charging is a deal breaker. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

      • +1

You missed the main point about how they'd likely play games on it all day, and do next to no school work. Stick to Apple laptops for their superior design usability, light weight, all day batteries and virtually no decent games. Perfect for kids, and adults who don't want to waste time on cheaply designed hardware.

BTW when registering your laptop on AORUS website (for warranty) try using this invite code: INVIT3COD3

I saw someone that it gives you an extra year of warranty.

asking because mine was "refurbished" (change of mind return) and was supposed to have 1 year of warranty, but registered as two with this code.

  • How many independent displays can these drive?

    • There is one HDMI port and one DP port so thats 2 already, and there's also a Thunderbolt 4 port which I think can power 3 displayoutputs at the same time?

      • Thought 3070 would drive at least 4 displays

        • How many displays a laptop can output to is based on what ports are available, not the graphics card.

        • Hi there, what I meant is there is one HDMI port for one display, one DP port for another, and lastly a thunderbolt 4 port, and the TB4 port when paired with a dock can power up to 3 displays on its own-albeit im not sure what. So its a minimum of 3 but I dont have experience with TB ports to tell you how many independent display output you can get.

And yeah like what codeXD said laptop gpus outputs are decided by their laptop ports not the gpu itself.
