my favourite gaming laptop is on special, maybe will help someone looking for a similar set of specs

NB: looks like Scorptec stopped selling, UMart still available

UMart: https://www.umart.com.au/product/gigabyte-aorus-17g-17-3in-f…

NB: thanks @fidelio same price at PCByte and Amazon (HT):
https://www.amazon.com.au/Gigabyte-17G-i7-11800H-Windows-Gam…
https://www.pcbyte.com.au/p/gigabyte-aorus-17g-xd-73au325sh-…

PS: another useful thing to try: when you register your laptop on AORUS website (for warranty purposes) use the following invite code: INVIT3COD3
check if it gives you an additional year of warranty? somewhere I saw that mentioned.

i7-11800H 8C/16T
16GB DDR4-3200 RAM
512GB PCIe gen4 SSD
second SSD slot available (gen3 PCIe)
RTX 3070 105w
Thunderbolt 4
HDMI 2.1
DP 1.4
mechanical keyboard, per key RGB
FHD 17.3" panel with 100% sRGB and 300hz refresh rate
full metal chassis - machined aluminium
fingerprint reader
99Wh battery

last but not least, 2.5G Ethernet - let's LAN party like it's 1990

pros:

  • very efficient cooling
  • very sturdy chassis, seriously first laptop I have seen in years that just can't be bent, including the lid
  • not a fingerprint magnet like Razer
  • mech keyboard with Omron switches is a win
  • easy to adjust power and cooling settings in Gigabyte software
  • up to date with gen4 PCIe NVMe (one slot out of 2, second is still gen3) and TB4, also HDMI 2.1 and DP 1.4
  • haven't encountered a game that wasn't smoothly playable (death stranding, control, Ghostrunner)

cons:

  • even though this is compact for 17 incher, it is heavy at 2.7kg
  • 105w for 3070 isn't top of the crop, but this means running cool. have never fealt heat on the keyboard
  • mech keyboard can be a bit loud
  • Gigabyte software has a bit of a learning curve, and it's better to get updated version from the Gigabyte website straight away
  • no profiles for RGB, you have one custom setting, or a variety of preprogrammed ones
  • battery life is 4+ hours on battery saver

chose this model after trying and returning or selling on Acer Nitro with 3060, Razer 17 Pro with 2080S, Omen 16 with 3060, Gigabyte A5 with 3070, Intel X15 (Kraken) with 3070 etc.

chose this over L5P with 3070 because of:

  • full metal build
  • mech keyboard with per key RGB
  • FHD panel with 300hz vs. QHD and lower refresh rate at L5P
  • L5P has long lead time

have fun!

Looks great, thanks for the writeup. I would really like a 16:10 screen, even if 1920x1200. Looks like I will have to wait for the legion model

    • +3

      I know, I like the 16:10 FF

my workaround is moving taskbar to the right. horizontal space is less valuable than vertical on 16:9. this is one of the reasons I stay on windows 10, taskbar can't be moved to the side on 11

      • +2

Any chance you know if it’s able to be charged via USB C at a slower rate?

        • +1

unfortunately no, it isn't. none of Aorus models do that AFAIK

even though the TB connector is on the same side as the power connector.

    +1 for write-up

    • thank you

  • Don't think it has a Mox switch which basically renders this laptop near useless by modern gaming laptop standards.

I personally own a 10th gen 3070 version and it's incredibly annoying when the software decides when it uses internal GPU and when it doesn't.

Sometimes using even external monitors it doesn't force GPU on, sometimes disabling the laptop monitor causes unbelievable lag when the software can't decide what it wants to use to power it.

When it comes to unbelievable cooling, yes at a cost lol. It sounds like a jet at the best of times due to extremely aggressive fan curves and CPU clocks.

Also in Gigabyte control panel you can't force it to save previous settings, for example every single time I turn on the laptop I have to return the GPU to full wattage otherwise it defaults to its power saving mode. The CPU default is okay because I don't play CPU intensive games and it probably can't take it anyway heat wise.

can't say I regret not having a MUX switch, haven't had any problems

10th gen has weaker intel graphics and runs hotter with less performance

I run my Gigabyte control center on:
      - AI disabled
      - Balanced mode
      - Balanced cooling curve

I can't say I can hear the fan in my G733 headphones, even playing something quiet like Death Stranding

      so YMMV I guess.

      • I can hear the two fans through my noise cancelling bose headphones even just doing office work because it ramps to 40-50% due to a medium CPU load.

I use the silent/balanced option as well.

Regardless I think if a mate had to buy a gaming capable machine I wouldn't necessarily recommend this model over others as a long time user of one myself.

all I can say is I tried a long list of gaming laptops in the past 24 months (the ones listed in the description are just the last 12 months), and this is the first one that doesn't leave me wanting in any way, which is quite a miracle

so YMMV. thank you for your feedback

          • @shabaka: All good, I didn't have as good as an experience with mine so definitely YMMV on this laptop.

Initially did quite like it, then didn't quite like it and now I find parts of it quite annoying.

It's not a bad deal on the price but even so I'd go with a new ROG or even a M2 mac whenever that comes out.

            • @Lighter Fluid: come to think of it, one thing I would change in mine is the short right shift. I wish laptop manufacturers would stop doing that

sell yours while it still has value and get something better?

              • @shabaka: 100% agree, the shift bugs me too :D

                • +1

@Lighter Fluid: once in a while JW get a batch of refurbished Gigabyte laptops, that's where I got mine. they said 12 months warranty but registered as 24 months on Aorus website

in my batch there was a 15g with a 3080 for $2123, and there were a few really good options for $1600 and up. now all gone, just 2 17X left, and those are huge 3.5kg monsters, form factor similar to Alienware m51, zero portability

if you sell yours now, get a good deal on something new :)

                    • @sarge: https://www.jw.com.au/laptop?product_list_order=price#

this is the page you ought to check once in a while.

mid Feb it was full of Gigabyte treasures, that's where I got mine refurbished for a bit less. was the best price at the time.

the previous batch of refurbished is all gone, but one Aero unit appeared today, maybe new batch is finally coming

    • +1

Bugger. I'm super keen, but no Mux switch is a deal breaker.

  • +3

Same price across multiple retailers, including Amazon (via HT). Must be another Gigabyte promo.

    https://www.pcbyte.com.au/p/gigabyte-aorus-17g-xd-73au325sh-…

    • +1

If its via HT, better run away and buy from someone else …

      • Why is that? Have you bought something from HT and had a bad experience?

Personally, I have bought a few items from them, and even had a faulty item returned without issues.

        • +1

Check out their reviews and quite a few bad experiences posted here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/692592, and this place is really tough, got negged just to tell the truth and warn other fellow ozbargainers by helping out

          • @kaikor: It's cuz people just badmouth a seller because they saw something on ozbargain. Many report that they have no issues with HT.

    • Amazon link shows $3299…

      pcbyte link shows sold-out…

      Is that correct?

      • looks like Amazon sold out, PC Byte sold out, Scorptec is also OOS but showing ETA of 22nd of April (tomorrow). we'll see

  • onli 105w GPU? u kidding me lenovo 5 pro can do much better and it has a more supreme 16 screen

    • +2

depends on games you play, I guess? I had X15 with 140w 3070, and A5 with 140w 3070. both sound like a helicopter while gaming, and run hot. this runs quiet and cool. maybe there are games out there that really require a 140w 3070, but I am not convinced it's even necessary.

I don't want any resolution higher than FHD for 2 reasons:
      - running Windows at 100% no scaling
      - on a 17" screen you will hardly see the difference. at the same time your CPU+GPU will produce smoother fps

if L5P had FHD panel with 300hz I would have considered it. but I am also not a big fan of the design (no pun intended). I really like this full metal build and mech keyboard, if you want L5P just buy one :) I chose this instead.

  • +2

chose this model after trying and returning or selling on Acer Nitro with 3060, Razer 17 Pro with 2080S, Omen 16 with 3060, Gigabyte A5 with 3070, Intel X15 (Kraken) with 3070 etc.

Thank you for your service and the detailed writeup

  • Resolution might be a bit low. Our eyes are used to super sharp phones and tablets these days.. This might appear grainy.

    • FHD running at 100% (no scaling) looks better than QHD with scaling - from personal experience.

but YMMV. a lot of manufacturers still make FHD 32" gaming monitors and people buy them. on a 17" screen it's not an issue I would say.

but once again, matter of personal preference. I like 300hz FHD panels :)

    • +1

FHD at 17" is like 4K at 34" in terms of pixel density.

Also, no one looks at the laptop screen as closely as the mobile phone.

Typing this on another 17.3" FHD laptop.

      • That is a fair point. As long as the panel on this laptop is good quality it should be fine.

I have a fhd panel with my 14inch lenovo yoga and it's not the best. The brightness is pretty average and text can be a bit blurry at times.

        • +1

Panel is fine because it's Pantone color corrected and it's pretty clear.

  • Great laptop but people shouldn't expect desktop 3070 performance.

    • oh hell no.

yes 3070 desktop is much much more powerful. 3070 mobile is more like 3060 desktop, I think

  • Can get L7 on sale for similar price with a 3070 but yes you will have to wait awhile to get it.

  • I have been looking to get one of these after you've posted about it on a few other laptop deals. Do you think this would go much cheaper in the end of financial year sales?

    • +3

I think there's a potential for that. GPU's are getting cheaper by the day, and new gen of CPU's and 30X0 Ti mobile refresh is out, AMD 6000 series are around the corner, and Intel 12th gen mobile is already here

these guys are already 1gen old, so they are bound to come down. however don't expect them to come down by much, I would say. maybe it'll dip to $2k

      • Okay thanks for your insight, much appreciated.

        • also JW contact told me yesterday to "Stay tuned for more updates or refurbished sales on our website in the coming weeks."

refurbished Gigabyte batches are often a treasure chest.

          • @shabaka: Have you bought a refurb from them before? What is the condition like? Is it like new, or have some scratches etc?

            • +1

@aveeno bb: mine is like new. looking at SSD and Bios log it was on for 2 hours before I got it

the box had a hole in it haha

but the unit hasn't got a single scratch

  • Anyone recommend a good second SSD slot (gen3 PCIe) compatible for gaming HDD, after 1TB.

    • I have Samsung 980 in mine (just 980, not evo, not pro), but other options are A2000, KC2500, SN550, see what's a good price for any of those

Should be a TLC drive (I am not yet ready to recommend QLC drives at this stage), preferably with DRAM (A2000, KC2500), but DRAMless is also fine for second drive (Samsung 980, SN550)

  • +1

    added UMart link

  • Can anyone tell me what screwdriver I need to take the back off? I bought another SSD, but I can't get the back off! :-/

I actually bought a "special" computer screwdriver pack off ebay last year, but none of them fit. :-/

    Any links? Thanks…

  • Thanks. I'll see if I can find one today.

  • alright folks, seems like sold out everywhere at this price
