is it worth it if you don't want to pay for the subscription?

update: doesn't seem like it, have to pony up $4 p/m.

    source: https://linkdhome.com/articles/video-doorbell-without-subscr…
Can you use Ring Doorbell without a subscription?
You can use a Ring Video Doorbell without a subscription, but you’ll have a very limited experience. You’ll receive basic notifications when motion is detected, or the Ring doorbell button is pressed, and you’ll be able to view the live feed from the camera and talk to whoever is there.

You won’t get any recorded ring videos, though, so if you miss the event you won’t be able to check up on what happened. You’ll also lose virtually all the smart notification features that the Ring doorbells provide which allow you to tailor what you get push notifications about and get only the alerts you care about.

Get the Eufy doorbell, has local storage - more expensive (about $180) but i put one in for the oldies and its faultless. Battery power lasts 2-3 months too in between recharges - but has the ability for mains power on the same device.

      • which Eufy did you get?

        • +2

Eufy wireless doorbell 2k with Homebase 2…wait for it to go on sale.

Its got a rechargeable battery - but also comes with terminals to hook up to the mains. Managed to get one for $180 on sale a while back.

All the footage records to the homebase which has inbuilt storage so no subscription needed.

      • I had an Eufy Wireless Doorbell 2K and tested what happens if the camera is stolen. It's trivial for the thief to remove the camera (just need a strong paperclip) and reset it for their own use. As far as I can tell, the footage is only recorded on the camera itself. I guess recording to the base station may use up too much battery life.
Eufy tech support never replied if there is a fix.

I actually think the subscription is totally worth it. I have 2x ring spotlight cams and the amount of footage it captures you’d want to put it in the cloud anyway. And the interface of scrolling back, watching and downloading it is great.

Re the Eufy with local storage, what if someone steals the camera? Or your NAS? Kinda defeats the purpose

      • Agreed. $40 a year is not much for that type of security. And if you can flog off the Show 5 for say $40, a $49 camera and a few years of subs makes a lot of sense and cheaper than the EUFY.

Have fun - the echo show is available now for A$35 on the amazon home page if you get Prime.

      • +1

The Eufy doorbell connects to a homebase unit which is where the footage is saved. So if someone steals the camera you'll still have the footage.

        • Have they fixed the bug where footage is lost of camera is reset?

          • @StevieRay: Nope. They haven't.

I've made sure not to buy anything Eufy until they fix that massive security flaw.

            • @CrushJelly: '…Eufy until they fix that massive security flaw…'

              What flaw?

      • I have the same and am impressed with its functionaliy.

Still worth it.. I bought one but don't plan on subscribing

    • If you just want a doorbell that will link to an old phone this will do it - the only pain if you aren't or have no desire to be an Amazon linked smart household with shopping and media merely a (hopefully sober) sentence away is the setting up two accounts, downloading and installing two apps, then going through the cycle of screens , buggy "captchas" , then [in my case] after three cancellations "backs", and 2 closings of the browser, a message that the accounts were linked and the [amazingly free] "skill" was installed.

Still in stock around Sydney. Bought 1, thanks OP!

    • Ok. Just collected mine from Blacktown Big W.

  • Thanks got one

  • You had to keep the live mode on to get the video to work with Alexa. This means the door bell battery will drain way before 6 months (every 2-3 months). It would have been great if alexa uses the ring's recorded video without relying on the live view.

    • "This means the door bell battery will drain way before 6 months (every 2-3 months)."
Not if it is hard wired. 20 buck Ring AC adaptor off EBAY to do the trick and you never have to worry about changing a battery.

Bargain when the V2 ring video doorbell is still $149 alone at JB.

  • I wonder if I can return my Echo show to Amazon and get this deal

    Too late anyway, all gone

  • Did they ever update it to stop the delay?

I remember when I used echo show 5 with ring, there was like a solid 15 second delay before it showed up and this was with good stable internet.

    • An update came down as soon as I connected the network to the Ring unit, but there's still the "Connecting to Ring" circle for some seconds. I though that was more the nature of local Wi-Fi and the bell itself.

      • Yeah 100% but I remember trying to use it like 3-4 years ago, it was really really bad. I could tell the echo to connect to doorbell, I would take out my phone, connect to the doorbell and be able to view it and the echo would still be trying to load it.

I did this with wifi that was stable 90-100 download. If it is only like 3-4 seconds then thats 100% fine.

Grabbed one. Local Big W had stock.

  • can someone confirm if ring door bell works smoothely with amazon echo show? i.e rings and shows the video?

What is the point of buying ring chime with door bell then which only rings (audio) and no video?

got ring doorbell and just bought chime yesterday, thinking to replace with amazon echo show.

    Thanks

    • +2

Yes it does mate (I own both.) No need for the chime either as I have alerts and doorbell rings come through on the Echo show, same applies with the subscription if you don't want to record your feed. Motion detection works well with the show also announcing these detections

      • Have you got any delay issues? eg. alert or chime only comes after 3-5 seconds?

  • Also available at Woolworths for same price

    • Shipped and sold by bigw plus $10 delivery fee.
