Busted my Note 10+ screen this week and don't really feel the need to go for another $1500 device. This might be just what I am looking for

    • +16

Absolutely. Flagship phones have gone ridiculously expensive. I used to buy a new phone every year or sometimes twice a year because of Samsung Note series. And finally I decided to stop wasting money on trying to get the latest and greatest. I sold my S20 and S21 couple of months ago and started used my old Huawei P30 and have not noticed phone running slow or that I am missing out on anything. I take my phone on motorcycle rides and managed to get a Quadlock case for P30 as well. The battery actually lasts longer than my S21 as I usually end the day now with 30-40% battery. I will never buy a flagship phone again.

      • +1

I love my P30. Battery is not as good as it once was, but the phone hasn't noticeably slowed down at all. Will be upgrading in the next 12 months I think, but happy to get 3-4 years from this phone.

haha my last expensive phone was back in the stone age days Nokia 8850 for something $1250 !!! Never again, and now I only limit myself for phones under $300.

      • My dad had the Nokia 8850, loved that phone.

        • Absolutely a gem all the way back for over 20 yrs ago, spending that much for a phone in yr 2000 was a crazy thing for me haha!

      • i paid $100 a month contract x24 for a nokia 8850, then at the end of the contract sold it for $1.2k

they kept their value back then

    • +2

Just don't expect the same quality photos.

      • Yeah for sure, can steal the misso's S21 if I'm wanting a nice pic tho. All I want is snappiness and no sluggishness and I'll be sweet

      • +1

Camera quality was the reason I always bought expensive flagship phones. But I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the Huawei. It takes really good photos during the day and has excellent image stabilization. I don't really shoot at night so haven't checked the quality of low light photos. So far I haven't missed my S21.

        • +1

I have the P30 pro the camera is still amazing compared to most flagship phones

      • i still use the pixel 2xl. is this moto phone better than that?

    • If you're bare paying $1500 for a redmi note 10 you are paying too much!

  • +3

That's a lot of phone for the money. I've been supremely disappointed with my Pixel 6, it's not really shown any improvement over the Pixel 2 XL that replaced it. I'm considering selling the P6 and buying this.

    • +1

Well I hope Motorola has lifted their game in the past 3 years. I wouldn't gamble on it.
Surprised you didn't see an improvement between 2xl and P6
I only upgraded to P3 and it's already much better.

    • +8

If you can't see improvement from 2XL to 6 flagship devices aren't for you and you might as well buy this budget phone

      • This is true. I've never been a power user in any sense, I really only upgraded this time because the P2XL had stopped getting OS updates, and the P6 looks like it will get several years of them. Thinking of which, I'm going to stick with it because I'm assuming I'll get more security updates from Google over the years than I will from Motorola.

  • +2

Mediatek, hmmm, what is this cpu comparable to the snapdragon level?

  • This or Poco x4?

    • Ideally a Poco F3 with a custom ROM if you can pay another $60

      • The Poco F3 has no hardware proximity sensor if that's important for you.

        • +1

So the screen doesn't go off during calling or what?

          • @Azro: It does, but judging by the reviews, it's unreliable

          • @Azro: You can accidentally push buttons or hung up during calls, you might press buttons while the phone is in the pocket etc.

Some users say they don't notice anything wrong, some say its annoying as hell.

For me personally is the sole reason why I don't buy Xiaomi/Samsung (even when I wanted). I want a phone, not a portable console. Call reliability should not be the place to cut corners.

  • +1

Hate to repeat myself from another deal but the proximity sensor sucks. Otherwise great value.

    • Really? This does seem to have a hardware sensor, unlike most Xiaomis and Samsungs (which is the main reason why I refuse to buy Xiaomis and Samsungs).

Is it that bad? Button presses during calls or when in the pocket?

      • Mine is bad. LIke I'll mute myself or even start another call with my cheek mid-conversation.

  • I second this very annoying when taking calls. Also the camera is terrible even with gcam. Aside from that th screen and battery are awesome for the price.

    • +1

we are talking about this Motarola right ?

      • Yep edge 20 fusion, that's the phone I have at the moment. Honestly, the proximity sensor thing I can get over but the camera is far worse than I thought it would be so just something to take into consideration, I will most likely change phones at some point soon just for better picture quality.

  • +1

Is the 20 Pro expected to go on sale anytime soon?

This looks like a great deal for a make-do phone, but I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for dual-gps, 144hz display and a snapdragon 870.

    • +1

JB discounts all of them occasionally. Nabbed the Pro a few months ago and love it. Came from LG V30+.

Haven't used 5G on it yet, dual 4G Sims chewed the battery but would last probably 2 days on single sim.
Kind of wished it had external storage but can live without it. Only thing it's really missing for me is wireless charging. A phone of this level should have it without a doubt.

  • Says OOS online and most stores.

    • Shows up OOS for me and every store near me but click & collect available for pickup on the 10th.

  • +3

Would bite for 8GB, for 6GB no thanks.

  • MediaTek is fairly decent performance in more recent gens, but I'd still avoid with 5G. I'd be interested in this at $299, but above that in the budget segment I would hope for 120Hz AMOLED like with Redmi Note 10/11 Pro.

Stores with limited stock it seems

you could just ask for jb hifi to do a price match, they got lots in stocks.

  • -1

Is this an actual dual sim where both work at the same time or dual sim with only one working at a given time

    • I've got the Pro and could use either at any given time. Twin reception bars on the display

  • +2

I have this as a work phone and it's really good.
Battery life is nuts, I charge it once every 3-4 days with light to moderate use.

Camera quality is ok, much better with the gcam app though.. i'd call it very good for the price you pay.

The processor seems to keep up with everything I throw at it, it only seems to struggle when the camera is open.

    Thumbs up from me!

    • Do you get all the features with gcam, like motion photos, nightsight, astrophotography mode?

    • Which gcam version did you find best for it?

  • How's the camera on this phone? My OnePlus 6 is dying and the only complaint I had with that was the camera.

  • How long will this get Android updates?

    • Probably never with Motorola.

    • Been getting updates on the Moto G 5G plus for over one year. I think i read somewhere it will be supported for at least two years.

  • -3

I had this phone for two weeks before I returned it. Direct swapped with a realme 7.

Absolutely hated the fusion. Camera is laggy and just cannot take a photo. Due to the lag in taking/processing, most shots aren't clear (unless it's a daylight static image?)
Really struggled to play any embedded video and even Netflix app would black screen and just play audio.
The wifi/5g data handling was also horrendous. It would constantly drop wifi for no reason and not pickup 4/5g without manually disabling the wifi.

Those issues were a deal breaker. The battery/charger and screen were good, but the phone just failed to function. I had all apps and phone updated, cleared caches etc etc, even ran some extra Dev options… Couldn't save it.

    GL if you buy

  • How does this compare to LG V30+. ?

I am missing better IP protection, and wireless charging. No good.

    • I got the Pro and came from the V30+. Aside from no SD storage (think the Fusion gets it for some reason?) and no wireless charging, it's a heaps better phone. I'd be charging the V30+ two or three times a day, same usage the Edge 20 is around 60-70% when I go to bed at night on one charge so I don't really miss the wireless charging.

      • Do you compare a new battery in this with 3 years old battery in V30? I changed the battery on my V30 and it goes really strong.

        • I never noticed much degradation in battery life in the time I owned the phone. Even from new, would be needing a top up around lunch time. Was always really dodgy under 20% also. Many times it would just shut down trying to do anything with it under 20%

          • @whitelie: Sounds like a faulty battery to me. Never had these problems until after 2.5 years use.

  • After price matching with jbhifi, use the 10% off on tcn gc reedemable at jb hifi, effectively putting the cost at a cool 341$

  • +1

Long time lurker, I have 1 of these phones and they are simply amazing.
I will no longer support companies like Samsung with their paltry 1 day battery life, no headphone jack, no dual sim etc etc when I can get something like this (which I did) which can last 4 days, I can use my bunch of different IEM, allow for SIM and SD CARD, offers good OLED screen with 90 HZ and the phone just works as intended.
My older Samsung 20FE was garbage compared to this phone, and I got it for $270 from memory but that was with an in store credit.

The phone vs $ is simply amazing and does more imo than flag ship phones that offer less. 1 thing I will miss is the camera, but for what I paid I simply do not care.

  • Amazing phone I had the samsung A71 5g which just failed last week and this motorola is just is so much better the interface screen battery life etc.

Snap these up people best value for $379 and future proof with 5g is a no brainer.
