I'm a big Fan of this

      I was blown away.

There is something about those pedestal fans. People buy a lot of them and then you can see all of them sadly looking out from kerbs during kerbside garbage collections. My theory is that they waste space, as soon as people realise this, they discard them in favour of ceiling and wall mounted ones.

    • +7

Those are usually the $10-20 AC motor fans

      • +1

Mostly them, but that's just because they are the most popular. I've seen all kinds.

    • It's because they are broken.

      • No it's not. I have checked tens of them and all were working.

As AC pedestal fans can be bought for $3.75, some buy a new fan rather than clean the dust off the old fan each year!

Used to scrounge those fans & clean them. All worked. Now it's not worth the effort.

Happy with a ($9.50 on sale) Target remote controlled 40cm AC pedestal fan with timer - quietly working great for last 2 years.

Main advantage of DC motor is greater speed control (15 on this model), vs 3 speed on cheap AC fans. Better if want low speed quieter fan.

That's right! If these dolphins are so smart they can figure out how to clean their oceans themselves. (I bet some of those people are "sea shepherds" and they don't see the irony in it.)
No need to harvest the copper from engines as well, Earth has limitless supply of that.
I have something better to do rather then to clean my fan (like watch tv series or sit on the internet forums).

Unfortunately Repair, Recycle & Reuse doesn't make economic sense to the 'time poor' on high incomes. But great for the planet.

Scrounged & repaired in minutes, a Panasonic microwave off kerbside garbage collections in Brissie 20 years ago - still in daily use.
Use what is considered a classic 70's chrome Sunbeam "Toastermatic" pop up toaster - just needed basic repair.
Scrounged, repaired & sold over a few months $10k+ of clothes driers - paid for a nice overseas holiday. (Usually those just needed unscrewing a cover & replacing the belt.)
Still have 2 pedestal fans scrounged years ago - both work fine, just showing their age so used in garage.

Scrounging may now make little sense economically (for me), but was great fun.

@INFIDEL: Very proud of you - true Ozb spirit, my wife hates it when I repair things and give them a few more years. I have another friend who takes it to a new level of repair with some 20yr old appliances and nearing divorce😁

            • @chav: Thanks👍
              Keep up the interesting work!

But some like buying new stuff! "Retail therapy"! That's also the "Ozb spirit"!

Kept a (fairly efficient) 45 year old fridge & washing machine going for my parents. Designed a digital control for the washer (could be interfaced with PC!).
If they'd had their way, it would have been replaced a few times over in that time… Shops are seductive.

They always bought "quality that would last". The shiny 70's toaster was also theirs.

My shed is full of parts for appliances, scrounged off ones I couldn't repair. And appliances to repair.

That's a fair bit of expensive real estate to store "worthless" stuff!! And the "hourly income" of scrounging isn't great, but it's often interesting.

It's become hard to move around in the shed! When I need a part, its often too hard to find & easier to order a new one…
And the appliances those parts fit are mainly on the scrap heap. It's got to go - next Council cleanup!

Yes, always consider there may be more important things in (your personal) life than Repair, Recycle & Reuse😉

  • This looks identical to the Arlec and ALDI one.

I bought the ALDI DC fan and it's great! So quiet at low speeds and good build quality!

  • How noisy is this one compare to target under $29???

    • +2

That target one is just an AC fan yeah? DC fans are much quieter at lower speeds and have more speed options.

      • +1

Yes, speed choice on DC fans is the main advantage. AC are usually 3 speed, which has never bothered me. Disadvantage is the higher price against $3.75 @Woolies😉

I use a Target remote controlled 40cm AC pedestal fan with timer ($9.50 on sale) - quietly working great in bedroom for last 2 years. Don't need any lower airflow, so suits me.
All other fans (mainly in garage) were free from kerbside!

No need to pay more, unless you really need low speed air movement.

    What's the RRP?

  • -1

Anyone know the wattage and if any stock in Victoria?

  • Using it for last few weeks. Satisfied. Low speeds (<=5) are quite compared to AC fans.

  • This one or the bunnings one better?

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/arlec-40cm-matte-black-dc-pedest…

Edit: Anyway, no stock near me.

  • anyone put a watt meter on theirs? im looking for something in the 80w range but I dont think any 40cm fan will do it, only 50

  • +6

Careful about this one, I received one that was clearly used before, but decided to go with it anyway because I don't really want to go without a fan at the moment and it was the last one in stock in my area. The box was ripped. Inside, parts were re-boxed incorrectly making assembly a pain, and the weighted base was cracked and had strange dirt on it. Parts had fingerprints on them and needed extra cleaning.

The fan itself works fine. It is hard to mess up the design of a pedestal fan and the 15 speed settings are good for control. 1 is much slower than my old fan, nice soft quiet breeze. I would say my old cheap fan's 3-speed buttons would translate to speeds 3, 5 and 8, and this one gets quite loud and strong at 15. There are also natural and sleep modes, but they're unnecessary to me and oscillate the speed in some non-descript way. The controls disappear after a while and light up the words "engy saver" to show that the fan is on but the display is off. This might be annoying if you're bothered by the spelling, and if they really wanted to save energy they could've just not had the light, since the fan is obviously spinning when it is on.
