  • are these eligible for win 11 upgrade?

    • Officially, no. Not with a 3rd gen CPU. But a quick search suggests you can force install it. Not going to be a seamlessly offered upgrade.

Supported list bottoms out around the 8th gen Intel CPUs

      • Windows 11 will run on a terrible AMD E2 9000e powered laptop and run about the same as it did on Windows 10 (have tested myself), so there's no reason that Windows 11 won't run well on this i7 machine obviously provided you unofficially install Windows 11 which is quite easy.

$280 + Delivery for a computer that's 8 years old is a terrible, terrible deal.

Please, nobody buy this, it's practically eWaste at this point.

    • Any recommendations for home office use under $150?

      • Search for dell optiplex 9020. They're everywhere

        • Would that work for a basic / low end HTPC setup? I just want a box for the living room to browse / playback on via HDMI to the telly.

          • +2

@Ham Dragon: They are certainly powerful enough but honestly I would just buy an Nvidia shield or Android box, or mirror your current pc to the TV with a chromecast.

The time spent setting up a HTPC isn't worth it, and theres still no remote

          • +1

@Ham Dragon: I'd look for a cheap second hand laptop that HDMI out in full HD.
The advantage of a laptop is it's low power consumption and comes with built-in WiFi and bluetooth.

I used to use a god-awful N3500 (?) CPU, 4GB tablet to make my television smarter, cost me sixty bucks. Works fine.

I upgraded to an i5-8250 CPU, 16GB RAM laptop for my HTPC. Cost me $80 because the screen was smashed beyondn repair and would've cost about $300 to fix. Laptops with broken screen are the best HTPCs. Don't tell anyone.

            • @jcon: Haha really good insight there…I'll definitely look into that.

        • yes. I have optiplex w i5 4570 and it is powerfull enough. However I got it for $190 2 years ago, so this is obviously $100 more, gen older and 2 year gone past = this is no deal by far for me :(

    • hah I looked at it and thought oh maybe a replacement HTPC but then i was like wait.. hang on.. gen 3 cpu… that's like… yep… 2013… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ThinkCentre_M_series#M92/M92p

That said.. my desktop is only a 2013 4th gen system and stills go aok.. (got a 1080 in it, but i dont game much/at all on it anymore).

    • +1

yeh at least get a 4th gen CPU for this price

    • My i5 2500k still runs like a dream!

      • For sure, and I'd say you should keep using that until it's a burned out husk.

        I wouldn't buy one though.

    • +1

Still usable just for Home/office. But this price is riduculous and I bought similar PC for less money 4 years ago

    • Far from e-waste, with 8GB and SSD it will be fine. But $280??!

  • +2

This is no deal. Plenty of 4th gen i7 sff on eBay for less money.

    • Yep, no deal.

  • +3

Doesn't feel like a deal, these have been way cheaper than this for ages.

Still a good machine, but at sub-$200, not almost $300.

  • As mentioned, this is about $100 above being a deal. This is old hardware.
