This price is pretty good. Note with the removable RAM this supports maximum of 32GB, but comes with an additional NVMe slot.

      This price is pretty good.

Any $1.8K laptop with this display is automatic garbage:

      40.9 cm (16.1") diagonal, FHD (1920 x 1080), 144 Hz, IPS, micro-edge, anti-glare, 250 nits, 45% NTSC

With HP, it's either Omen or nothing at all

  • If the maximum supported RAM is 32GB, does that mean it can go up to 64GB?

      what

The model of this laptop is Victus Gaming Laptop 16-r0305TX (AG3U4PA)

      Memory module, 16 GB (DDR5-5600) N38627-005
      Memory module, 8 GB (DDR5-5600) N37792-005

Those are just the SKUs they offer it in, you should be able to use 2x 48GB modules to get 96GB RAM no problems.

Here is the service manual: https://kaas.hpcloud.hp.com/pdf-public/pdf_7660048_en-US-1.p…

      Here's 96GB of DDR5-5600 I found on Amazon
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-2x48GB-5600MT-5200MT-CT2K4…

      • Previous experience had windows not recognising 2x32GB sticks. Their support also stated 32GB is the maximum. So anyone with input on this exact model?

        • Which Windows version? How long ago? Was RAM recognized by BIOS? I suspect it was BIOS (chipset) problem and not the Windows problem

          • +1

@dr: Could be. It was on Win 11 and the 12th Gen Intel Victus two years ago. 64GB should be the maximum, but never got it to work in the end.

        • Here the HP guy said it would accept 64gb

          https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-…

These guys say it will work with 96gb

          https://www.compuram.biz/memory/hp-hpe/notebook/victus/serie…

Just buy the ram you want from Amazon and if it doesn't work you can just return it for free.

No reason that 32gb should be the max on a ddr5 machine. I am running 64gb DDR4 on a 9th Gen Intel Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen2

For laptops it was 16gb max DDR2, 32gb max DDR3, 64gb max DDR4, 96gb max DDR5. Maybe can get higher on some of the desktop replacement laptops that run desktop CPUs in them but I don't think anyone has managed that with more recent machines.

          • @Agret: Yep, had to trade it for another machine just so the upgrades could work. DDR5 64GB 5600 on a Dell atm no issues.

Wonder how much build quality differences for their Victus comparing to Omen?

    • +1

These have similar build to the Dell G series. Which would be basic.

    • Never seen an Omen in person but I got a Victus in 2022 and it is very flimsy plastic. You only have to look at the screen and it starts wobbling.

Aren’t these mobile Raptor Lake chips also defective?

    • -1

I don't think they get to the voltage that self-destroyed the Raptor Lake chips.

      • That's incorrect.

All they need is 65W TDP and they are at risk. Basically ALL 13th and 14th gen gaming laptops are affected.

Make sure you download the BIOS updates to prevent this.

        • +1

You have a source on that?

          https://www.reddit.com/r/intel/comments/1edhm93/raptor_lake_…

Seems to be only those on B0 stepping. This one is on C0.

Even then I really don’t think the processor can get to the voltages to degrade. My desktop runs higher than this and keeps its voltages below the upper limit and laptop processor are power limited normally.

But yes update your BIOS to be safe.

          • @jlogic: Intel initially said in July 2024 that it was affecting all of their 13th and 14th gen processors with a TDP of above 65W. This statement was then changed to say "desktop" and also an explicit statement saying that the issue doesn't exist on laptops.

However, it was pointed out here for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/s/ZeoUE0yDkl

It is assumed that Intel is not willing to hurt the reputation of their laptop OEMs but if you see this HP Victus for example already received several BIOS updates that mentioned "stability improvements" so if you get this, just install the all the BIOS updates.

            • @meong: I would take that post with a grain of salt… that developer seems to have a "grudge" against Intel, understandably so in regard to the desktop CPUs.

At the time when I was researching this issue, XMG laptops was providing very regular updates on this issue to their laptop owners. They received a laptop from a user who was having very similar issues to the degradation, and they tried everything that would knock a desktop CPU down if it had degradation and it passed all the test without crashing.

I haven't seen or read any definitive proof in relation to laptop chips being defective, and every search always points to the post from Alderon Games all saying exactly what the desktop CPUs issues were, but nothing specific on what laptops were having the crashes. Whereas with desktop there are plenty with evidence attached and plus hardware reviewers have confirmed. Nothing for laptops that is outside normal defect rates.

Laptops were kind of insulated from this due to their limited power limit. The only CPU I would worry alot about would be the i9's as that would of got the mother load of power tricks to get it to perform the way it does, from the laptop manufacturers.

Here is their detailed thread about this issue - https://www.reddit.com/r/XMG_gg/comments/1e6hs65/psa_notes_o…

A very in-depth article on their home page - https://www.xmg.gg/en/news-update-intel-core-cpus-laptops-st…

Again update the BIOS etc and you should be fine in regards to voltages.

              • @jlogic: I would like to really believe you on this. But i just dont believe Intel especially in the way they were silent about this issue in the beginning.

Intel laptop processors also have a TDP of 65W and higher so I would be cautious and rather skip this generation or just get AMD.

                • @meong: You don’t need to.

The CPU in this machine although listed as a 13th gen, is really a 12th gen.

It’s an Alder Lake stepping. C0. So no defect.

    • +1

Might be safe… these although badged 13xxx are revision C0 which means an Alder Lake die which is 12th Gen.

      • Ah, cool, so hopefully this won't blow up like other Raptor Lake (B0) CPUs.

    • +4

GamersNexus and Wendell of Level1Techs said they were going to post information about the mobile chips also being affected. But then Core Ultra CPUs came out for desktop and the conversation moved on from Raptor Lake being defective, to Arrow Lake being a trash architecture and a waste of sand. Overnight it was like the Raptor Lake controversy disappeared.

Safe to say people in the tech press have moved onto complaining about OEMs price gouging, Zen6/Core Ultra 300 rumors, low GPU stock and 12VHPWR/12V-2x6 cables melting. But I haven't forgotten… I own a 13600K and I never had issues personally, but then again I never pushed it hard (I just play the odd games, watch YT videos and make some word docs) and I run it on a B series chipset which probably doesn't have all the fancy voltage auto OC options for AIB Mobos to use like the Z series boards have. I also basically never ran things that destroyed the core really quickly like a Minecraft server which for whatever reason just allowed the CPUs to request 1.65V continuously and destroy the ring bus.

To be honest, Raptor Lake is so cheap now that even if my 13600K died, I'd easily replace it for like $349 again and not worry and the extended warranty was needed by Intel to give confidence that even if it died I really wouldn't care, I got my money's worth. I saw 14900K's going for $649 in December last year and like at that price, that's a killer CPU for that price, it'll render videos and do general CPU tasks super-fast and it basically is the third best gaming CPU on the market in terms of performance behind the 7800X3D and the king 9800X3D.

I hope it never happens again that we get some defective chip from either Intel or AMD, but it's bound to happen eventually, AMD had their blunders back in the day like the K10 TLB bug.

Worthwhile highlighting the 8gb 4070 in this. This will get you 4060ish desktop speeds (although slightly better at 1440p and 4k)

    • possible to get 4060 or 4070 16G?

  • 17 inch with 32GB RAM OMEN is $2,099 - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/365040520469

    • that is 16 inch but yes another deal it appears.

Are there really lots of people out there, who buy gaming laptops instead of a regular gaming desktop?

    Struggling to understand…

    • +1

Smaller form factor with a screen, easier to move around. In saying that, I still use dual screens with my laptops lol.

    • I could see someone buy this to stuff in a backpack for some dedicated VR gaming.
Definitely more expensive than building an SFF PC for this purpose, but it has the battery for portability, as well as a screen and keyboard for any troubleshooting that is required.

    • +1

Good for students who aren't at home that often, if you want to run AI models on the go, if you want the extra power for video editing/CAD drawing.

There's a lot of use cases for them outside of replacing a gaming desktop and I've seen several small businesses using gaming laptops for their employees despite there being no games on the machines.

I already have a good gaming desktop but this machine is still attractive to me with the good price, normally have to pay a lot more for an rtx 4070 laptop.
