The price of top end bats is stupid these days

    • Yep. Especially considering you're paying more for low density (which allows for a bigger bat) and straight grains than for performance. Even worse, the low density big bats that look so powerful tend to break far earlier than denser, smaller bats.

Manufacturers are absolutely taking the piss.

      • i haven't played cricket for decades and my most expensive bat was a slazenger v100, but why are players going for the low density bats in the first place? seeing as bigger bats don't really equal better performance, like you say?

Two reasons: (1) Batters these days like the look of a bat with a big spine and big edges…it's what their heroes use on TV, so they want it to. You need low density wood to allow for that extra size while keeping the weight of the bat constant; and (2) cricketers are idiots (I speak from experience, as I am one of them). They're always looking for a mythical performance boost from their gear, when they should be in the nets practicing.

          • @amiafish: lol that second one is true probably for most amateur athletes in whatever sport. except the pros have done the hard yards with technique refinement. surely people realise that pros also have their gear paid for so durability isn't of their highest concern?

            • @tdw: As with many things people buy (e.g. brand new cars, the latest flagship phone, smart watches etc.), they don't think too deeply about the underlying value…it's all about "me want, me buy". Advertising creates the demand, peer pressure from early adopters does the rest.

              People really are that stupid.
