[QLD] Scott Spark 970 Dual Suspension MTB $1,999 (Was $3,799) @ Just Ride Nerang (in-Store), Bikeline (Contact for Delivery Fee)

740

This popped up on my doomscrolling feed and figured it's a lot of bike for not a lot of money.

Very well rated bombproof dual suspension bike for those both starting out or who just want something a bit different.
if i didn't live in Perth, would've definitely picked up one of these in a heartbeat.

There's another supplier in Toowoomba QLD as well if you can't pickup at the aforementioned store.

Myride seems to have them in stock Australia wide for all of us not in QLD, although availability is sporadic

    Great bike for that price.

I bought one of these, because it is a great price. But beware, there are lots of proprietary parts, the twinlock system is probably the main one. If you bust a shock or fork and want to replace it, your options are very limited if you want to keep the twinlock. And because the rear is inside the frame, you can’t manually flick the lockout on or off without it. It is also 15kg so it’s a bit of a truck for something that’s advertised an XC/downcountry bike. But that’s to be expected for full squish at this price.

Happy with my purchase so far.

Shouldn't really have any issues with the twinloc system so I wouldn't stress. They did have an issue where the lever wouldn't stay in the locked position, if that is happening take it back to your place of purchase and Scott will send your dealer a new part to fit to your twinloc lever. I imagine most of these bikes have it fitted already

I had 1 instance where we still had issues after it was fitted and Scott sent us out a brand new complete lever and that rectified the issue.

      • Thanks for the reassurance. I’m not so worried now, I’m more thinking in five+ years time, esp as it is a 2022 model already. But it is what it is, there are elements of that to pretty much all bikes these days, especially MTBs.

I can't for the life of me figure out why they put the rear inside the frame; enshittification at its finest!

    • 15kg, surely not? My 160mm bike is that and it's mid spec aluminimum with minions!

      • Yep. I guess at the end of the day a 160 fork doesn’t weigh that much more than a 130. It also has fairly heavy tubed tyres on.

Everything in this price range is around that weight; the frame itself isn’t particularly heavy. Low spec wheels, forks and drive trains on an aluminium frame just aren’t light. The base Specialized Chisel FS which makes a big deal about being light is 14.5 kg.

    • Sounds like my 2005 Scott, it has a weird Scott shock that operates in extension rather than compression. Lockout stopped working around 2015. Servicing seemed to involve shipping the shock off somewhere at the time, wouldn't be surprised if it was impossible by now. Still rides OK though.

The model name 'Spark' makes it sound like an ebike!

    • +2

Yeah it is a bit of a misnomer.

  • I have the 960 version of this, easily my most favourite bike in the stable

    Big fan of Scott bikes.

  • Anyone seen any on the Central Coast NSW?

Has been this "sale" price for a while now. I bought the 970 in Silver from My Ride (Unley, SA) back in November for the exact same price. Great bike!

    • Yes they had a Black Friday sale which ended 8th December

    • +1

Did you post it on Ozb?

    • +3

Is this a serious question? Capable mountain bikes are not cheap. This is not a commuter bike.

      • +4

Thats like saying an mg suv is better than a prado

One will fall apart on you
The other will get you from a-b

        • +2

Alternatively, both the MG and the Prado will get you from a-b, without falling apart.

    • Defs worth checking marketplace if you are trying to spend as little as possible, I got a $700 bike (merida big nine 20) for $200

    • +5

I agree, $2k is on the low side, but not everyone needs a $5-10k mountain bike.

  • The Genius 940 is also a decent price, $2,399.99.

    • Surely trolling.

  • What's a good entry bike for downhill outdoory mountain bike stuff? Wouldn't mind having a go at it. And what's a good spot for a noob to start at in Melbourne area?

    • Check the trailforks app 😄

      • Thanks will do

        • Lysterfield is probably the easiest for noobs just because in some areas it can get really confusing

    • You Yangs if you're on the west side. Lots of easier XC trails on the Kurrajong side and then a good progression of XC and downhill track difficulty on the Stockyards side.

      • Thanks, love it. Im not afraid of some rough terrain, more afraid of getting in people's way. Dunno what the culture is like, presume its reasonable folk, but still.

This is more of a cross country bike, think lightweight parts and a thin frame.

If you are wanting into downhill i would recommend a decent enduro bike first as they are capable of doing everything and wont be impossible to ride back uphill if you decide to pedal rather than shuttle.

For enduro bikes have a look at the commencal meta sx, marin rift or alpine, specialized enduro, giant reign. There is a million brands and most of them are decent.

Then once you are fully confident of wanting to go full downhill, you can flog the enduro bike and buy a proper downhill bike!

      • Thank you thats awesome advice. Appreciate it and will look into those bikes.

    • I'm in WA so can't help you with the where to ride question, but look up your local MTB clubs or local FB groups, they will usually have regular rides that are open to everyone to come and join and it's a great way to get involved in the sport. (local shops are also worth asking as they are usually in the know)
This way you get to meet some other people and get shown around your local trails - win win.

  • I have a 2019 Spark 920. The twinlock system is great and requires little maintenance. I'm not a fan of the more recent models that route cabling through headset, looks neat but way more hassle when servicing of brakes and drivechain due - if you have a bike shop do your servicing then expect more
Labour time /cost. The proprietary bolts are annoying but no a big deal.

  • It's priced well for the components. Miles better than any Kmart bike, this one will last a long time. That being said it's a little cheap for me, a good bike is an investment that should last 10 years+ with some refreshment as needed/desired.

  • Says one left, but only one of the three frame sizes is crossed out.
